You've seen and adored the work of Brooklyn-based Michael Perry... you just don't know it yet. Perry's hand-formed typography and cute teenage-diary-style illustrations have been seen on everything from album covers to magazine headlines. We're loving his new book, "Hand Job," which features his work, along with the work of other pioneers in the hand-drawn design movement.

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: The Mood Swings
Just moments before their new album hits the shelves on June 12, we recommend you get acquainted with The Mood Swings if you aren't a die-hard fan already. Band members Ashley Prenzlow, Sallie Watson, Mike Reiter and Dan Boen mix punk and 60's garage rock with hard-driving melodies that will have you tapping your toes and bobbing your head.
Your new album "No Limit" is releasing on June 15th - how would you describe your sound and what are your inspirations?
Our inspirations range from Hawkwind, The Rolling Stones, Pandoras, Spirtualized and Oasis. 60's psyche, punk rock, classic rock and indie rock...Our main goal is to rock!
Minneapolis has an awesome history of hot girl rockers who are/were your favorites? Any fond memories of the 90's riot grrrl phenomenon?
The early 90's were an amazing time for music. It was inspiring to see so many bands with real people actually making a living doing indie rock! It's too bad that boy band and girl bands took over the late 90's (ah, Britney). Regardless, it was a time that inspired us to pick up guitars, learn how to play them, and start writing songs of our own! As for the local scene, there are many male and female musicians that we respect and are fortunate to have as our friends and mentors. We hope to see the local scene continue to grow and develop into an even stronger community of musicians and artists. We feel it's very important build networks and try to move this thing together. On this record, we made the choice to get 5 other local Dj's/Musicians involved to each remix one song from No Limit. We love the unexpected, yet organic feel this gives our record.
Describe your personal style - do your on-stage personas mesh with your everyday looks?
Yes and no. We generally try to be comfortable on stage because you can't really rock with guitar pedals while wearing 3 inch heels...and rock comes first. I'd say our style is sophisticated rock and roll. It's really more about developing our personal style vs. being trendy. We're both buyers at Macy's and thank god they haven't picked up on the business formal trend like other companies recently – power suit not required. Lucky for us we can have some creativity and let some of our 'night time style' merge into daytime. Buyers by day, rockers by night - haha. We really enjoyed wearing our outfits for Voltage! Our designer (Jenny O) partnered with us to come up with a look that was reflective of some of our favorite looks - 60's inspired shift dresses with military details! We loved them!!
Can you give us an official "Mood Swings" favorite summer cocktail recipe?
Who has time to make drinks? We don't make them, we buy them! Our current summer fave is the bonecrusher or the honey-dew-me from JP’s. And when we're in NYC for work, it's for sure the tangerine martini from Koi!
Join The Mood Swings on Friday for a special listening party at Brit's Pub @ 9pm and then for their CD Release party on June 15th at the Hex!
