"Color Me Obsessed"

@ Trylon Microcinema
3258 Minnehaha Ave
Minneapolis

Fri & Sat. 7 & 9:30 p.m., Sun 4:30 & 7 p.m. / $8

How do you make a rock-umentary about a famed band without one note of the featured artists' tunes? That's the question Gorman Bechard, director of the recent film, Color Me Obsessed, has been defending since the film's screening. Shot mostly in MN, the documentary is a tribute to adored local rock hounds,The Replacements, featuring interviews from fans, friends, music critics and rock legends – including Grant Hart, Steve Albini, Tom Arnold and Lori Barbero – debating the fate and history of the 'Mats. Dubbed “alternately hysterical and heartbreaking,” the film is like a watching an intense dispute between polemic music geniuses in someone's seedy basement – and we mean that in the best way possible – and what it lacks in video footage and familiar audio, it makes up for with passionate rants and insider deets on the uber influential TC rock band. Saturday's screening features a Q&A session with Sound Unseen producer, Jan Radder. And don't forget to scrounge up your First Ave Replacements Tribute ticket stub (See listing below!) for a complimentary popcorn!

Saturday’s show also features the multi-instrumental St. Paul artist El Le Faunt (aka Thomas Maddux) with his accompanying Traveling Circus Band. El Le Faunt describes his sound as: Old Fashioned Murderous Folk Themed Music, so it should be a fine match to Communist Daughter’s off-kilter musical aesthetic. The Rope / Blue Sky Blackout / Aaron & The Sea

@ Hell’s Kitchen
80 S 9th St.
Minneapolis

10 p.m. – 2 a.m. / 21+ / $5

For a party of prodigious proportions get your ass down to Hell’s Kitchen this Friday to see some cool cats play catchy music with a dark undertone. Local band The Rope have fronted some of the most exciting shows of the past few months, in the process building serious buzz with their propulsive post-punk. Comparisons to Joy Division and Sisters of Mercy are understandable, but we think they’re providing a unique take on the much loved gothic-dance sound that deserves new life. The affable dudes of Blue Sky Blackout have one of the catchiest EP’s of the year – their John Hughes release – and working with their great catalogue of songs they always provide a highly energetic live show. BSB’s tunes skillfully get you dancing and may earworm into your head for days after. Minneapolis duo Aaron & the Sea create ominous soundscapes with layered vocals and unexpected instrumental flourishes. Their low tempo sonic creations also manage to incorporate a striking counterpoint of bold percussion, making them a band you should experience live. Practice your best Ian Curtis dance moves and get down to Hell’s Kitchen to embrace the dark grooves!

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 18TH

Paul Mpagi Sepuya “Studio Work” & Eric Baudelaire “Sugar Water”

@ Franklin Art Works
1021 East Franklin Ave.
Minneapolis

6 p.m. – 8 p.m. / Free

Two internationally recognized artists bring recent work to the Franklin Art Works gallery and screening room for an exhibit this week. With “Studio Work” Paul Sepuya collects the material and photographs that defined his residency at The Studio Museum in Harlem to create a unique glimpse into the private work space of an artist. The exhibit incorporates both installations and mounted photographs to provide a multi-faceted experience. “Sugar Water” is Paris-based artist Eric Baudelaire’s single channel video projection which uses a fictitious Metro stop as a venue for a hypnotic series of images meticulously pasted in sequence using traditional billboard installation methods. As the images change a provocative story unfolds; exploring themes of political violence using a distinctly deliberate visual language. Both of these artists have an impressive pedigree of exhibitions in international venues, so we expect this to be an exceptional evening of art. Come on down and satisfy your artistic sweet tooth!

Making Progress

@ Gallery at Fox Tax
503 1st Ave NE
Minneapolis

7 – 10 p.m. / free

This Saturday don't miss the latest exhibit curated by guest John Alspach of BroadCast Exhibitions. For Making Progress, artists Kristina Mooney and Andy DuCett join forces to create a show that uses photography and illustration to rearrange our culture's past. Like the incog pages of a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure book, DuCett and Mooney's pieces offer a shift in reality, placing “a vague ending into a punchline or a dead end into a new beginning.” For this exhibit, DuCett edits Polaroids, adding characters or setting to change how the event is remembered. Mooney's work is buried in architecture, constructing and demolishing civilizations and exploring the concepts of “disaster and optimism.”

In review: Joynoelle's "The Caged Bird" Spring 2012 Collection

Text by Beth Hammarlund, l'étoile Founder & Creative Director
Photos by Corey Tenold, special to l'étoile

In lieu of a high-production runway show, Joy Teiken of Joynöelle presented her Spring 2012 collection in an intimate showcase at The Grand Café on Monday evening. With its limited capacity, the bistro was an unconventional choice, but the warmth and style of the venue served as a natural compliment to the collection.

Models wove the through the restaurant in cocktail dresses and evening gowns in a simple palette of black, ivory, brown and deep red. Teiken had drawn inspiration for the collection from "the caged bird," ornamenting garments in cascades of wispy feathers. In the evening's most literal moment, a delicate black cage pattern subtly echoed a windowpane plaid.

Several of the black and white looks veered perilously toward french maid territory, but Teiken exercised restraint before any of her work became costume. The designer knows her aesthetic and her audience, and she knows the right moment to pull back.

A selection of bridal gowns closed the show, including an incredibly detailed finale gown that earned frenzied whispers of approval from the audience. The look was classic Joynölle, vintage-inspired whimsy and fine detail. But above all, the elegantly constructed gown looked expensive, which is one of the highest compliments a designer can receive.

In review: Christopher Straub Spring 2012 Collection

Text by Beth Hammarlund, l'étoile founder/creative director
Photos by Peter Holme

Christopher Straub unveiled his Spring/Summer 2012 collection on Sunday afternoon at the Westin Hotel in Edina, and it was without a doubt his strongest collection to date.

The Project Runway alum presented 21 sea-inspired looks that further revealed his strength with prints. The collection featured three original prints that Straub created, using his own digital photography as a building block. Though two of the prints highly resembled prints from Alexander McQueen’s legendary “Plato’s Atlantis” collection, they were truly executed within Straub’s aesthetic.

This was not the designer’s first foray into prints. His Spring 2011 collection included an original green and cream patterned motif that was fresh and sophisticated and left me wanting more. It was exciting to see the designer pushing further in that direction, and I’m interested to see where he goes with it.

A knee-length shift in golden earth tones and a fluttery number in sea greens and blues were chic and extremely wearable. The dresses themselves were tasteful, if simple, but the prints transformed them from off-the-rack basics to conversation pieces.

Straub showcased his signature densely packed petals, but instead of the flowery concoctions we’ve seen in the past, he graduated to spiky black stars. Thanks to Dolce & Gabbana, stars are having a moment on the runway and in editorials. The choice was extremely on trend, without being too on-the-nose. That said, the aggressive pieces felt disconnected from the rest of the collection to a degree that was almost jarring. The dress was overwhelming, but with the right styling, the mini-skirt and bolero jacket could be excellent statement pieces.

Structured ruffles in white python adorned dresses and skirts, and an extremely interesting top. However, the hardware details on the pieces were so small, they almost looked like pins holding the folds together. It was an unfortunate effect that did no justice to the strong construction.

The collection included a large selection of separates. A black and white print elevated a well-tailored blazer from simple to eye-catching. An incredibly accessible piece, it could be worn by both teenage rebels and ladies who lunch. (Just don’t let them know that they’re wearing the same thing). Straub had another hit with a chic belted jacket in white python print that would be elegant with wide-legged trousers or over a fitted dress.

However, several looks missed the mark. A strapless mini-dress with a ruffled detail was sexy and fun, but it belonged in a Whitesnake video. (There is nothing wrong with looking like one should belong in Whitesnake video, as long as the individual is aware that she looks like she should be in a Whitesnake video.) Compared to Straub’s other more sophisticated pieces, it felt dated and over-the-top.

Three pairs of leggings strutted down the runway, but there were no trousers in sight. The printed leggings were fun, but ultimately, printed leggings are still just leggings. They made little of Straub’s technical abilities and cheapened the otherwise interesting tops with which they were paired.

A dramatic cap-sleeved gown in white python closed the show. The finale dress found an found an appealing balance between ethereal and stark, but it was the penultimate look that reigned supreme over the collection. A full-length gown featuring fluttery sleeves and a high neckline, it would have felt overly conservative, and potentially girlish, in a solid color. But in Straub’s original print, it was at once edgy and sophisticated.

Straub still struggles with editing, and there were a few elements of this collection that could have been scaled back. Fewer ruffles and several more inches of hemline would have raised the level of sophistication. However, several looks showed a new sense of restraint. Straub constantly pushes himself, and though his collections are uneven, when he hits it right, the results are mouth-watering.

This review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the Child Neurology Fund, an organization which funds research and treatment for children with brain disorders. In addition to bringing attention to the cause and raising money for the organization, Straub also made a little girl’s year by designing a one-of-a-kind piece to wear in the front row. After the show, she joined Straub onstage and assaulted him with the kind of fierce hug that children save for those that they truly adore. You’d be hard-pressed to find a nicer guy.

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 11TH

Signals: New Paintings by John Megas

@ Gallery 122 at “Hang It”
122 8th St. SE
Minneapolis

7 p.m. – 10 p.m. / Free

Painter John Megas is perhaps best known for the wildly accessible and irreverent take on commissioned artwork showcased on his blog Panda Licking on a Light Bulb. His inaugural solo exhibition finds him bringing his singular impressionistic painting style to some rather unusual subject matter. While you may pass by hundreds of unnoticed examples of the detritus of our power system every day - lines, substations, transformers, ect. - Megas has produced a series of works that put front and center the intrusion of the grid into the landscape. The result is a show that explores an enhanced awareness of the presence of the power infrastructure in our daily experience. Megas's works on wood unveil the unique and austere beauty of these ubiquitous industrial structures. The opening reception will also feature live music by violinist Shannon Frid of Cloud Cult. Power up your Friday night with a stop at this "electrifying" exhibition!

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 12TH

The Lodger: A Story of London Fog w/ score by Paris1919

@ Ritz Theater
345 13th Ave. NE
Minneapolis

8 p.m. – 11 p.m. / $15

Sometimes it’s difficult for those of us inundated in the media overload of the new millennium to appreciate the subtle beauty of films from the silent era. Trust us; once you’ve seen how inspired musical accompaniment can enhance the experience, you will be a convert to this unique art form. This exceptional event features the atmospheric early Hitchcock film The Lodger with a new score by experimental local super-group Paris 1919. The film is a classic Hitchcock mind-fuck exploring sex, murder, suspicion, paranoia and death – all silently of course. To shake things up, musical provocateur Chris Strouth has assembled a rotating cast of fabulous local musicians and vocalists to amp the intensity with an eclectic, complex new soundtrack for the film. The result is a live performance/film hybrid that’s sure to be a treat for both music-heads and cine-nerds. Having witnessed some of the wonderfully weird and ambitious events Chris Strouth and friends have had their paws in (hello, Czeslaw's Loop), we think this event is one you certainly shouldn't miss.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 12TH

“City of Heroes” & “Travels”

@ Rosalux Gallery
1400 Van Buren St NE #195
Minneapolis

7 p.m. – 11 p.m. / Free

Totalitarian Socialism gets a bad rap! If you listened to most politicians and commentators you’d think all Socialism was a bad thing. Well, ok, maybe there were a few pesky problems with some of those mid-century Socialist regimes, but they also left a rich legacy of unique art and design. So on balance not all bad? With “City of Heroes” artist John Diebel distills forms and motifs of the enduring Brutalist Architecture of Socialist Eastern Europe and mixes in the skewed flat perspective 3-D of '80s gaming graphics. His subtle take on outdated modes of futurism along with a strong graphic point of view makes these collage-based images arresting and thought provoking. With “Travels” Minneapolis artist David Malcolm Scott takes inspiration from the places he has visited and events experienced in the past twenty years to explore time, spatial relationships, and the meaning of place. Using his training as an architect, Scott brings a sensitive understanding of the space where the man-made world interacts with and blurs against our natural environment. His visually dense works created in a wide variety of media depict cityscapes and ancient ruins or sometimes evoke their subjects more abstractly. These two complimentary exhibits will be appreciated by anyone who enjoys architecture, design and the complex legacy of art in a historical context. Alternately you could go just for the Socialism – it will make Michelle Bachmann really angry!
