Weekend What's What 7/26-7/30

WE GOT THE BEAT

This weekend's recipe? Two words: electronic orchestrations. The sweet melodies of Jenny Dalton, the funky beats of Terry Mullan, the "yo mommas" of Pharcyde. You name it. Not enough? How bout a little Nord'East folk, a smidge of Southside punk and a big shot of downtown electronica? Add some art, a pinch of drama and the best damn ham sandwich you've ever tasted and find all your many appetites fully sated.

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: The Cool Kids

Chicago's Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish aka The Cool Kids, have shared the stage with such names as Lil' Wayne and GZA, and their brand of old-school rap is sending out waves from coast to coast. Don't miss the Cool Kids at the Louder Than Bombs show August 5th at Foundation! The kids were cool enough to sit down with us for a little chat:

What were your musical influences growing up?

Mikey: Nas, Sade, NWA, Mobb Deep, B.I.G., Hall and Oates, James Brown, and my mom yelling about cleaning up.

Chuck: alot of jazz, new wave, classic rock, and all the classic hip-hop…

What can you tell us about your album "The Bake Sale", when does it drop and will we be able to get it on August 5th at the Louder Than Bombs show?

Mikey: It’s gonna have some cool songs on it you might like, you may have heard a few, lol…. And sadly it won’t be ready for August 5th but will be dropping this fall.

Chuck: The bake sale is basically us letting loose… we were trying to make our favorite album without over thinking it.

What article of clothing or accessories can you not live without?

Mikey: My 2 gold herringbone chains…I feel empty without them.

Chuck: My Mac book (nerdy I know).

Any new remixes, collabos, projects you want to tell us about? We heard something about a Chromeo remix...

Mikey: We have some things in the works but you’ll have to stay tuned to the Myspace page to find out more (ha that’s a teaser and a little trick I picked up in journalism school)… thanks though for taking the time to interview us, we appreciate it.

Chuck: I’m remixing “Delilah” by The Plain White T’s… and were gonna be doing a remix with The Carps, an ill ass band from Toronto and friends of ours. Also check out coolkidstv on youtube for the official behind-the-scenes access… besides that we’ll be around, thanks.

SANDWICH SUNDAY!

A delicious, made-from-the-heart sandwich is one of the best ways to say "j'adore"...In our opinion anyway! The following recipe is one of our favorite comfort foods, and we swear by its power to make everything better. Seriously. Not to mention - it's easy as heck to make!

l'étoile's Fancy Ham & Cheese

Maple Ham (thinly sliced)
Brie Cheese
Fig Preserves
Sliced Sourdough

Spread brie on one slice of bread, fig preserves on the other. Add the ham, then grill on the stove with a bit of Olive Oil until golden and melty and viola! Serve with organic greens and a cool glass of bubbly Preseco!
