THURSDAY FEBRUARY 2ND
Twin Cities Daily Planet Winter Party & Sausage Fest
@ Summit Brewing Co
910 Montreal Circle
St. Paul
6 – 9 p.m. . $15 adv, $20 door
As much as we really want to make dirty jokes about tonight's event (ahem, sausage...), we will suppress the 14 year-old in us and get down to the reasons why you don't wanna miss the Daily Planet's Winter soirée. First of all, the fine local fare. Tonight's bash features artisan sausages – a hip new food trend – done best by eight of the TC's top meat makers: The Black Forest, The Butcher and the Boar, Clancey's Meats, the Green Ox Provisions, Kramarczuk's, the Modern Cafe, NateDogs, and the Sample Room, not to mention delicious sauerkraut, German-style potatoes, Dan Brady's to-die-for chocolate chip cookies – made with eggs from free-range Nordeast chickens – and even veggie brats and tofu pups for the non-carnivorous. No one leaves this party hungry. Secondly, the tunes. Local legends the Brass Messengers will be slamming out their tuba-fronted spins on everything from the sounds of the Caribbean to polka and heavy metal. Lastly – as you would expect from a party hosted at the Summit Brewing house – there are the beer highlights. The local brewing company is donating 7 of their popular brews on tap including the EPA, Horizon Red, Maibock, Pilsner, IPA, Great Northern Porter and Oatmeal Stout for your drinking pleasure. Wursts, brews and brass. We can't think of three better additions to a winter party.

Cum on Feel the Noise: Monster Ballads
@ Club Jager
923 Washington Ave N
Minneapolis
10 p.m. – 2 a.m. / 21+ / no cover
DJ Danielle Morris and guest rocker Christy Hunt (Pink Mink) serve up classic power ballads and monster jams (and hopefully some sweet air guitar moves) tonight at the monthly Cum on Feel the Noise butt rock par-tay. Grab a sexy bar stranger to slow dance to the Scorpions, then sip down delish drinks from l'etoile music editor/Jager star baby, Robyn Lewis. From butt rock to metal, hair bands to scare bands, there's only one dance night where the ladies of the decks have the balls to blast it all, sans any ounce of shame. CFN, we tip our teased hair to you.
In It 2012: Old Friends/New Work
@ Jax Building
253 East 4th St
St. Paul
6 p.m. – midnight / free
Rumor has it that on average even the most famous of art masterpieces only draw only 8 seconds of a viewer's attention. 8 seconds! So, basically, in the time it takes for a bull rider to complete a rodeo ride, someone will have glanced at the Mona Lisa and moved on. Hopefully, we won't even have to make a Luke Perry reference here to elaborate on how short that is. Tonight's exhibit challenges viewers to expand their normal concentration span and peep at art in a new way with 12 works that blur the stimuli realm with video, slideshow and a live soundtrack and pose the question: if you stimulate more senses, will you attract more attention? Check pieces from over 20 artists, enjoy music from the MPLS collective YES!LET'S and Fourth & Wall of St. Paul, plus sip down libations from sponsors PBR and Lowertown Wine & Spirits.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 3RD
Not About Bombs
@ Intermedia Arts
2822 Lyndale Ave. S
Minneapolis
7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. / Free
The Middle East is fraught with symbols and signifiers, so much so that sometimes it’s difficult for us to separate the rhetoric and symbolism from the reality of the individual people who call it home. Not About Bombs attempts to remove some of the histrionic political baggage that comes with nearly any exploration of the lives of Iraqi people using art that is technically accomplished and also emotionally honest. The six female artists in the exhibit, brought together by local curator, Tricia Kuhtoretsky, approach their work from a place informed and influenced by the conflicts in the region and the stereotypes that define them. At every turn these artists manage to transcend and subvert those limitations with edgy, contemporary artistic voices. Their work is sure to have you reevaluating any easy generalizations about the gender roles, politics and identity of Iraqi women. This well-curated and thought-provoking show is a must see!

Crossing Borders
@ Altered Esthetics
1224 Quincy St. NE
Minneapolis
1224 Quincy St. NE
Minneapolis
7:00 p.m – 10:00 p.m. / Free
Provided you’re not sporting a full-on Native American heritage, it’s safe to assume there’s an immigrant experience somewhere in your family tree, likely in the not too distant past. Immigration, despite the standard perception, is one of the common experiences all American’s share directly or indirectly. Crossing Borders gives over a dozen artists the chance to explore how the immigration of past generations and in the present shapes individuals, families and culture. Using both research and personal knowledge, the artists show a varied and complex picture of the immigrant experience in an array of media including painting, photography and even glasswork. This eye-opening show gives you the chance to consider your own history and contemplate the heady mix of cultures and origins that makes our community so richly fascinating.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 3RD
WORKING TITLE: An Evolving Art Exhibit (OPENING #3)
@ CO Exhibitions
1101 Stinson Blvd NE
Suite #2
Minneapolis
6-9 p.m. / Free
What do you get when you invite some of the Twin Cities preeminent art and design talents to collectively create, embellish, revise, and re-work dozens of pieces over the course of four weeks? We think the answer is – a sexy hotbed of fecund creativity – and we're dying to see the results! Not only have the folks over at CO Exhibitions conceived this grand experiment in art-making, they've structured it as a uniquely interactive opportunity for art makers and art lovers to participate in a dialogue about the local art scene. Each week a new opening reception will occur (this Friday being the third of four openings) displaying the changes made to each work over the past seven days. These changes can include style, concept, and number of contributors, but also price, scale, and media. Buying a piece will freeze it in time and prevent further work, so art lovers will be able to choose when a piece is complete. Additionally, surprise musical acts from artists known for their cooperative nature will pop up at each opening. We're over the moon to see what artist faves like Michael Cina, Rudy Fig, Jennifer Davis, Carly Schoen and numerous others can produce in collaboration with gallery "CO"-owners and design influencers Burlesque and Permanent ADG. This experiment in evolutionary artistic collaboration is bound to be one of the most compelling events of the year - as well as a shit-ton of fun - so if you know what's good for you you'll check it out!
BONUS: This Friday is the 3rd of four openings. Additional dates include Fri, Feb 10th.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 3RD
@ Turf Club
1601 University Ave
St. Paul
9pm / 21+ / $8
One of the reasons we love our fair city is its sense of community. So when a 300 pound ice dam fell off of local music lover Tasha Pruitt's apartment building and onto her rendering her unable to work, it's no wonder that musicians, artists, restaurants, venues and retailers from all over the TC have come together to raise moola to help alleviate some of the financial burden and loads of medical bills she has incurred. Eats, treats, art, products, services, concert tickets, raffle prizes galore and lots of other goodies to bid on all whilst rocking out to bands you love like Gay Witch Abortion, Birthday Suits Danny Sigelman, Blood n Stuff, and the Seawhores (laser light show set down in the Clown Lounge!!) and DJ's Lady Heat will be on the decks spinning crowd pleasers galore in between sets. It's a win-win! See you there.
FRIDAY FEBRUARY 3RD

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 4TH
@ Grainbelt Bottling House
79 13th Avenue NE
Minneapolis
7 p.m. / 21+ / $10
For more than seven years, beloved boutique Cliché has made their annual Avoid the Grey fashion show their signature event. But this year, they're ditching the runway for a less traditional showcase of their bevy of local talent. Inspired by the idea of voyeurism, local designers including Danielle Everine, Needle & Black, Amanda Christine, K.Jurek Couture, and Rachel Blomgren will each show one over-the-top look viewable through individual chambers. The multi-media event is rounded out by artwork by Bryant Locher, Caroline Debevec, Daniel Jaffe, Emilie Robinson and Isa Gagarin, a short film screening from Andrea Bursott, a cash bar, and tunes from DJs Ken Hannigan and DJ Cardigan (AKA Cliché co-owner Josh Sundberg).
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 4TH
New Work by William Sattler + The Icy Shores Farewell Show
@ Cause
3001 Lyndale Ave S
Minneapolis
7 p.m. – 2 a.m. / 21+
Tonight, your favorite Uptown bar doubles as both a gallery and a venue for an art opening/farewell rock show. Head down to Cause early to peep local artist William Sattler's visually-popping paintings, prints, collage, stencil and mixed media. Sattler's work symbolically and satirically examines the beliefs and choices of American culture, family, conflict and religion. After the satisfying your art tooth, stick around for an au revoir show for veteran indie rockers, The Icy Shores. Celebrate/mourn the band's 7+ year run – depending on whether you're a glass is half full, half empty kind of person – with an evening of live music from anthemic quartet rock band, Story of the Sea, garage punk rockers, The Desert Vest and catchy indie rock trio, The Half Hearts. Whichever emotion you end up with, thankfully there's booze to help you through.

The HUGE PUNY Show
@ Huge Theater
3037 Lyndale Ave. S
Minneapolis
10:30 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. / $5
If only it was socially acceptable to spend your Saturday evening watching a Muppet Babies marathon …again. Alas, you are no longer four, and your entertainment tastes are expected to have evolved at least nominally since 1989. There is an alternative to the MB marathon though! PUNY. The accomplished creative group who have contributed animation for 62 episodes of Yo Gabba Gabba! (and oh-so-much more) is giving you a chance to relive the Technicolor wonder of preschool television with their decidedly adult take on those candy colored daydreams. In the first of what’s planned to be a slate of monthly live shows organized around themes related to their work, the HUGE PUNY show explores kiddie TV. In addition to actual preschool TV industry guests, writer Will Shepard and comedian Rick Kronfeld, and stand-up comedy from Bill Young and Chris Knutson, there will be two Improv troupes, videos and animation from PUNY. How they plan to stuff all the chewy goodness into one hour is beyond us, but we assume they’ll be playing to a toddler’s attention span. On that note, please be aware that the show is not intended for the little ones so prop junior up in front of a bootlegged Barney video with a bottle of Mountain Dew and head on out! (kidding, please don’t do that…)

House Party '97
@ Honey
205 E Hennepin Ave
Minneapolis
10 p.m. – 2 a.m. / 21+ / $5
The Spice Girls are dominating the charts. MMMBop is a chorus line teenage girls are belting on the regular. Missy Elliott isn't afraid to flaunt her stuff in an over-sized garbage bag-esque outfit. Madonna is asking us not to cry for her. Some rock band called Everclear is promising to “Buy You a New Life.” Yes, friends, cast your memory back to 1997, and all its musical glory. This Saturday you won't need a time machine to enjoy your fave dance tunes of this epic year, merely head down to Honey where the late '90s are alive and ragin' courtesy DJs Jonathan Ackerman and Daniel Berube with special guest Mike 2600.
