l'etoile's Guide to Sales & Shopping: January 31-February 6

This week in local shopping and style events, celeb eyewear designers Coco & Breezy return to their hometown for an in-store appearance, Cliché hosts its annual "Avoid the Grey" fashion show, an Art Shanty fashion show, and Valentine's shopping events galore.

Thursday: Coco & Breezy In-Store Event
What: Internationally-celebrated eyewear designers Coco & Breezy are returning to their hometown this weekend for an in-store appearance and pop-up shop at sneaker and streetwear shop Studiiyo23. The identical twins, known as much for their personal style as for their studded-and-chained eyewear, will be mingling with fans and offering some stellar deals - 50 percent off all glasses from 6 until 7 p.m., and 25 percent off from 7 to 8 p.m.

Beginning Thursday: STYLEDLIFE Semi-annual Sale
What:
Fans of designer accessory haven STYLEDLIFE have been waiting with bated breath for the Galleria boutique's sale of the season. The shop will be marking down everything (excluding vintage items) 30 to 70 percent, with more items fromb rands like Missoni, Pucci, Alexis Bittar (pictured), Marc by Marc Jacobs, Lauren Merkin and more at greater discounts than ever before, including music. Plus, newly arriving Spring/Summer 2012 merchandise also receives at 15 percent off discount.

Thursday: RAW Minneapolis 2012 Showcase Season Launch
What:
Independent arts showcase RAW made a splash when it launched its local chapter last summer. After a few months off, it's back with a brand new season of local art, music, and of course, fashion. Representing local fashion is Gina Marie Vintage, a decidedly fresh take on classic dressing via free-flowing tops, skirts, pants and dresses in silks and knits. Tickets for the 21-plus show are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

This week: Donate & Save at My Sister's Closet
What:
My Sister's Closet is expanding their semi-annual half-off sale for do-gooding shoppers. Beginning this week, shoppers who make a cash donation of $1 or more in support of Joseph's Coat receive 75 percent off their total purchase of the store's entire stock. We've scored gorgeous vintage dresses during this sale for $20 a pop, not to mention never-worn, 1980s Donna Karan ankle wrap heels for $15, so this sale (running for two weeks) is nothing to scoff at. Note, the deal is only valid at their St. Paul location.

Thursday: His & Hers Valentine's Shopping Events at Flirt
What:
There's nothing more classic for Valentine's gift-giving than Parisian lingerie, and St. Paul lingerie boutique Flirt is giving ladies the chance to craft their wish lists for their fellas. This week, ladies are invited to a night of shopping, champagne, chocolate, and complimentary lipstick applications from Flirt neighbor Brow Chic. Then next Thursday, February 9, their guys are invited to take home their goodies and enjoy a scotch and beer tasting from Solo Vino, snacks from Cheeky Monkey, and a cigar from Stogies on Grand.

Thursday: Valentine's Day Jewelry Sale
What:
The fine jewelry designers at the Northrup King Building are making Valentine gift-giving even easier with a series of studio sales throughout the building. Emily Johnson of EC Design is offering 10 to 20 percent off all in-stock pieces. Her sale extends to Saturday, February 4 from noon to 4 p.m. in studio #436. Across the hall in studio #435, Betty Jager, Susan Frerichs (pictured), and Britta Kauppila will have 20 percent off of silver jewelry and their new studiomate Katie will have 10 percent off her hand-made stained glass boxes. Over at #438, Robin Rife will have 20 percent off her beaded jewelry. Around the corner in #423, Cari Johnson will offer 20 percent off a selection of glass jewelry. In studio #288, Karin Jacobson is taking 20 percent off all in-stock pieces, and will be joined by Post- handbags, which will be debuting their latest collection. If you can't make it, she'll be offering the discount in her online shop by using the code "Valentine" at checkout.

Friday: Cocktails for a Cause at l'atelier couture
What:
The ladies of l'atelier couture are throwing a night of cocktail dresses and cocktails. The bridal boutique has brought in short dresses and skirts from nine of their couture designers, offered at 10 percent off, with a portion of the proceeds going toward the American Cancer Society. Saturday: "Avoid the Grey"
What:
For more than seven years, beloved boutique Cliché has made their annual Avoid the Grey fashion show their signature event. But this year, they're ditching the runway for a less traditional showcase of their bevy of local talent. Inspired by the idea of voyeurism, local designers including Danielle Everine, Needle & Black, Amanda Christine, K.Jurek Couture, and Rachel Blomgren will each show one over-the-top look viewable through individual chambers. The multi-media event is rounded out by artwork by Bryant Locher, Caroline Debevec, Daniel Jaffe, Emilie Robinson and Isa Gagarin, a short film screening from Andrea Bursott, a cash bar, and tunes from DJs Ken Hannigan and DJ Cardigan (AKA Cliché co-owner Josh Sundberg). Saturday: Valentine's Shopping Event at Roe Wolfe
What:
Get gussied up for Valentine's Day with a ladies-centric afternoon of cocktails and shopping from Mendota Heights designer boutique Roe Wolfe. The shop will be joined by special guest, luxury lingerie boutique Touch Boutique (pictured) for a trunk show of lacy confections, plus refreshments and treats.

Just announced: Minneapolis-St. Paul Fashion Week
What:
Mark your calendars: MNfashion just announced the events calendar for the semi-annual Minneapolis-St. Paul Fashion Week, happening February 18 to 25. Formerly known as MNfashion Week, the week celebrating local fashion designers and retailers has made the industry-aligning move from April to February, and whittled down the lineup to favor quality over quantity. Highlights look to include "The Shows" (February 22), featuring Fall/Winter 2012 lines from local designers Emma Berg (pictured), Amanda Christine and Kimberly Jurek, as well as the Red Dress Collection (February 19), a benefit fashion show featuring red dresses by local favorites Max Lohrbach, Danielle Everine, Berg and others. Another new addition is the Emerging Designers Showcase (February 20), sponsored by l'etoile and featuring up-and-coming designers Marissa Bridges, Vivian Aronson (YQY by Vivian), Caroline Hayden, Gina Marie Landes (Gina Marie Vintage), and Nicole Larson. Saturday & Sunday: Sashay Shantay at Art Shanty Projects
What: Local fashion makes its first foray into the Art Shanties on Medicine Lake with the Sashay Shantay. Shanty-goers can don hardy knits and coats by local designers Danielle Everine (of Project Runway fame), Rachel Blomgren (pictured), Lela Horst Baumann, Carly Shoen and others in a stylized photo booth. Plus, the handmade creations will be showcased in an on-ice runway daily. The event will culminate with a full runway show on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Ongoing: Spinario Design Moving Sale
What:
Vintage interiors haven Spinario have already moved to their new digs, but for a limited time, much of the stock at their old location will be 20 percent off. Merchandise available at discount currently includes Paul McCobb, Dunbar, Alvar Aalto, Scandinavian glass, original mid-century art, paintings, prints, and sculpture, studio pottery, books, records, lighting, and much more. New items will be added regularly, and prices will continue to drop to 40 and 60 percent off as they sale continues.

SHIP&SHAPE's "Be Mine" collection
What: When Minneapolis-based online retailer SHIP&SHAPE launched last fall, we were ecstatic over the charmingly edited collection of clothing, jewelry, stationery and more by local luminaries such as Rachel Blomgren, Annika Kaplan, Molly Erickson, Erin Smith and Isa Gagarin. With their second collection, launching this weekend exclusively at www.shipandshape.com, the collective offers an ode to love with a Valentine's-themed collection called "Be Mine." The romantic collection ranges from the overtly love-themed, like the ceramic mug sets with the phrase "I love you" written out in various languages; or more subtly sweet, like ruffled cotton bloomers and a porcelain lace collar. Each item is available in ultra-limited runs of about five a piece, so get them while they're hot.

Ongoing: "Character in Costume: A Jack Edwards Retrospective"
What:
Twin Cities costume designer Jack Edwards is about the closest we'll come to having our own Edith Head. His fabled history has included stints working as the right hand man alongside some of New York’s significant 1960s costume designers, an 18-year tenure as the Guthrie Theater’s Costume Director, and a dozen years as costume designer for the iconic 8th Floor Christmas Fantasy Lands at Dayton's. His sizable body of work - including dozens of costume sketches, photographs, press clippings, playbills, reviews, and 30 actual costumes designed by Edwards - will finally receive its own stage during the Goldstein's Jack Edwards retrospective, "Character in Costume."
