A weekend of wind-swept wickedness awaits, but be sure to sense the magical possibilities the holiday offers - a window into another world; a chance to visit the ghosts of ideas past. SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: STEVE MOORE
Steve Moore's spooky-hip sounds make l'etoile shiver and shake. From Zombi (a collaboration with A.E. Pattera), to Lovelock (his latest disco-dreamy side project) as well as movie scores, international music tours and more - Steve Moore is someone to keep on your radar.
This week l'etoile had a sit down with Steve about horror, Halloween and his musical process:
How would you describe your process for creating a film's soundtrack?
I usually start by letting the movie roll while I play along on piano or synthesizer, improvising until I have a handful of ideas that click. After I've established themes for a few key scenes, I'll step away from the film and develop and arrange these themes in an attempt to create something that will both enhance the film and stand on it's own. Most of the remaining music will either be variations on the existing themes or improvisations I'll record while watching the film.
What intrigues you about Italian horror films?
What doesn't! The exotic locations, the beautiful women, the fashion, the music, the vivid colors, the outlandish and creative death scenes, the gross-out sound effects, the bad overdubbing, etc. When it comes to horror movies, I'll take oppulent visuals and wild, synthesized rock music over sound plotlines and lucid dialog any day.
We love Lovelock. How did that begin?
Thanks! Lovelock essentially began when I was 3 years old and my parents would play the Saturday Night Fever LP over and over and over and over - that potent soft-rock/disco/pop cocktail pretty much skewed my musical affections from then on. It's possible that all the music I've been involved in over the past 10 years was merely a rebellion against the pop music I was force-fed as a child, and that I've finally given in to the dark side - which is actually the light side, I guess.
Favorite Halloween memory?
Every year when I was young my family would go to a pumpkin patch about an hour outside of Pittsburgh. We'd pick out pumpkins, then head to a nearby pine tree nursery to pick out and tag our Christmas tree. After that, we'd usually go out to dinner, and I'd fall asleep in the car on the way home.
Any new projects on the horizon?
Zombi is getting ready to record our next album, which should be out on Relapse Records next Spring. We also have a 12" single coming out very soon on Throne of Blood Records (James Friedman/The Rapture's new label) with a few italo-disco-inspired tracks. Lovelock will have a track on the next Eskimo Records comp cd, and I'm looking into releasing a couple 12" singles before I shoot for a full-length. I also have a couple film scores lined up, as well as a bunch of collaborations, including an all-synth intro track I just recorded for the new Lair of the Minotaur album (Southern Lord Records).
