Walker After Hours 2/15

l'étoile magazine swooped through the Walker on Friday night for the opening of the must-see exhibit "Worlds Away: New Suburban Landscapes". We were lucky enough to catch up with curators Andrew Blauvelt and Tracy Myers. Said Blauvelt, "Suburbia is a cultural blindspot for the arts, architects in general and artists in particular." Their dedicated group chose to spotlight an amazingly diverse collection of suburban-inspired works, including a piece made in collaboration by NYU darling Jesse Seigers. Jesse and crew chose "hot-rod trashcans" as their favorite suburban icon.

From city cats to country club cuties, the crowd sparkled with the kind of excitement and comraderie only a completely familiar, iconic and almost disturbing theme like Suburbia can create.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 14TH

New Works by Samantha French

@ Toomer Gallery (located in SOOVAC)
27th & Lyndale
Uptown

5-7pm / Free

Though sunbathing may be the furthest thing from your mind this season, that shouldn't stop you from indulging in Samantha French's balmy fantasy world tonight at the Toomer Gallery. Another MCAD grad fled to NYC, her work recalls the feeling of a more romantic, modest and somehow sensual era of stylish one-pieces and bathing caps.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 14TH

Anti-Valentine's Day Show #8

@ Stasius
Lowry & University

When the venue's own comment on the show is "the cupids have gone bad", you can only assume the attitude of the event will be one of disenchanted bitterness transformed into rock and roll frenzy. So, if your Valentine date stands you up, join the jaded at Stasius tonight for a pleasant evening of not giving a damn.

The current climate might leave you with Paula Abdul’s “Cold Hearted Snake” on heavy rotation in your head, and although this show at First Amendment shares the theme of callousness, your eyes will think differently. A collection of work from across the country, curated by Jenny Schmid and accompanied by the sounds of Beatrix*Jar will certainly infuse your life with some humor.

FRIDAY ART PICK: THE WOOSTER COLLECTIVE/IMPROV EVERYWHERE

Thanks to mplsart.com's Emma Berg for bringing this little gem to our attention. Clever Wooster Collective contributors Improv Everywhere do a 5 minute "stand off" in Grand Central Station that is pretty wild. If you're not familiar, the Wooster Collective is a large network of artists that contribute to a website that focuses on ephemeral art placed (or acted out) in public all over the world.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 15TH

Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead

@ St.Anthony Main Theater
115 Main St. SE
Minneapolis

7pm & 9:45pm / All Ages

Lloyd Kaufman churns out another out-of-control flick that may shock you to death, or possibly melt your eyeballs, but probably will just make you laugh your intestines out - in true Troma fashion. The maker of such gross-out, low-budg classics as "The Toxic Avenger", "Nuke em' High", and "Terrorfirmer", Kaufman is a hero to independent filmmakers everywhere. In his latest endeavor, making it's Minneapolis premiere tonight at St.Anthony Main, the Troma founder takes you on another outragous journey with Poultrygeist, the first chicken-zombie horror-comedy...with musical numbers!

Tonight, join Lloyd and the Troma crew in person at St.Anthony Main, then head over to Stasiu's Place in Northeast for a wild afterparty with rockin' locals, Faggot, Unicorn Basement, and more, plus Troma film screenings, a costume contest, spoken word by Lloyd himself and appearances by special Troma guests.

This week, l'etoile is pleased to share with you our first artist-on-artist feature. We've paired local artist, musician, filmmaker and #1 Troma fan Josh McKevitt up with Troma founder and Director Lloyd Kaufman for a short q&a:

If the first Toxic Avenger is your Taxi Driver, and Terror Firmer is your Citizen Kane, what is POULTRYGEIST?

My Schindler's List.

what was the fuel for POULTRYGEIST?

The evil Fast Food industry; Limousine liberals/millionaires like Al Gore are full of fast food.

Why haven't you ever cast your daughters as the lead in any of your films?

I consider all the leads in my films my daughters. Thats why I don't sleep with them.

Would you eventually like your daughter(s) to carry the torch of Troma one day?

No,The Troma torch is too Toxic

What advice would you give to young filmmakers?

To thine own self be true.

Is James Gunn a primadonna to work with now that he has murdered the Scooby Doo legacy and some how wormed his way into the heart of his lovely wife who stars in one of America's hottest TV shows?

James Gunn and I were lovers in jail, please respect our privacy.

How do you go about casting in your pictures? How does that process work?

We find out, from God, who will be the next Julia Roberts, Al Pacino, or Harriet Tubman and then we cast them.

What's next for Troma after the POULTRYGEIST release?

After Poultrygeist I will act in a number of independent movies - I do it for free if there is no budget. By the way I just decided that my next film will be a Zombie re-make of Broke Backside Mountain with Heath Ledger.

When can we have you back to Minneapolis again and most importantly where's Michael Herz?

I will return to Minneapolis for free beer anytime, and Mr. Herz is actually, secretly, Oprah Winfrey.

And finally - describe your perfect Valentine's Day, Kaufman-style!

My perfect Valentine would be spent with my beautiful wife...watching Poultrygeist with the Minneapolis fans!

Interviewer Josh McKevitt graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with a Film Degree and currently is working on a number of projects in the realms of film, music, and visual art.

l'étoile's Guide to Getting Lucky 2008

A ROLL IN THE HASTE

Cold is in the air, no, love is fool! If all isn't coming up roses, we've done it again with our last minute guide to making a lasting impression this Valentine's weekend. Whether you're single, coupled or "its complicated", as always we're not here to judge, we're here to help. We've hinted at, in the most adorably blatant way possible, the importance of making a plan and sticking to it. We don't care if it takes a lot of guts, cash or connections to make your most grandiose of gestures. We say make it happen, whatever it takes. l'étoile researchers have discovered beyond a shadow of a doubt, this weekend is filled with memory making possibilities that are yours for the taking - or the missing, if that's the way you want to be about it.

Located at 750 East Lake Street in Wayzata.

Buy your valentine's valentine at Letterbox, the scene of a real-life love story turned stationer. Husband and wife team Kimberly Yurkiewicz and Zach Barocas set the sentiment standard with a cultured array of everything necessary to introduce heart to paper. Located at 2741 Hennepin in Uptown.

Some-Ecards

If you're not sure you care to send your very best quite yet, why not send a message that better captures your current romantic reality? We haven't laughed this much over free ecards in a long time. It's possible Some-ecards hit some of us a little too close to home…in a good way!

Lou Lou Loves You

And l'étoile loves Lou Lou. Cutest under-things ever. A present for both parties, these fresh British knickers will definitely give your evening a kick. A little late to order, but online gift certificates are available for those who celebrate Valentine's Day every day.

Lush has landed at the MOA! The newest addition to Lush's famous line of massage bars is a steal at under $10. Philosophy Candy Hearts Lip Shine Trio

Available exclusively at Sephora, these lip-smacking glosses are much more mouth-watering than the conversation heart candies that inspire them. If you can't bring yourself to say the words, these moisturizing treats will let her lips do all the talking. The Philosophy Candy Hearts Lip Shine Trio is available at Sephora in the Mall of America.

Legacy Chocolate

Sex and chocolate have been close compadres since the days of Montezuma. Legend has it the king sipped cups of "xoco latl" to put him in the mood before visiting his harem. I know we just got all historical on you, but if l'étoile were a harem (and some say as much!) we'd definitely go for the sultry confections from Legacy Chocolate. In addition to their famed spicy sipping chocolate, try Potion No. 9. Thick, sinful and tasty; you'll find countless uses, and ahem, places, for this decadent sauce. Located at 2042 Marshall Ave in St.Paul.

Where Have All the Flowers Gone?

We don't know about all the flowers, but the cool ones still reside at Roger Beck. Florist. While many shops have jumped on the hipper-than-thou floral-arranging bandwagon, the designers at Roger Beck are still blazing the trail. Located at 1100 East Franklin Ave in Minneapolis.

We've Got a Crush on You!

Good l'étoile friend and cohort Brian Chan whipped up an adorable Valentine's Day mix that's almost as crushworthy as you!

HOT DAMN!

You've got a date. Now what? l'étoile's at-home beauty boosts will make your dermis divine. And hey, if all goes well, the cash you'll save will help to continue the celebration all weekend!

Bestest Body Buffer

This recipe was handed down by one of the most notoriously sexy, on-the-go gals we know. We expect it will be published someday in her racy memoir, but here it is just in time for you. Right before you shower, mix 3 parts organic sesame oil, 1 part sea salt and 7-10 drops tea tree oil in a small bowl. Dampen skin (leave shower running for steam), and work scrub into skin one limb and part at a time. Shower off, but don't rinse away all the oil – that's where the magic is! Seal the deal with a spritz of your favorite scent.

Lip Scrub

For a kissable pout, mix equal parts honey and baking soda to create a paste. Add a pinch of brown sugar for additional texture. Smooth onto lips, exfoliating gently, and let sit for two minutes. Rinse with warm water and follow with your favorite lip balm (we like Bonne Bell Lip Smackers in Dr. Pepper).

Brightening Mask

To fab up winter skin, try out this classic. Crush five uncoated aspirin (the back of a spoon works best) and gradually add warm water to make a paste of medium consistency (not too watery!). Add a dollop of mild facial cleanser (we use Cetaphil) and apply mask to face, lightly rubbing the mixture onto skin for maximum exfoliation. Let sit for five-ten minutes and rinse with warm water. The salicylic acid in aspirin will tighten pores, minimize oiliness, and brighten your complexion. Hint! This mask works on other troubled cheeks as well.
