Glitterball 2.0 @ The Varsity Theater
The Varsity Theater was rocked by Glitter Ball 2.0, a tribute to 70's Glam Rock to benefit Clare Housing and Minnesota Aids Project sponsored by Rock the Cause. The ball featured live performances by Crash Street Kids, White Light Riot, So It Goes, Mercurial Rage, Sick of Sarah and All the Pretty Horses. Each played their fave glam rock songs from artists like David Bowie, Kiss, T Rex, Queen and more. Local celeb Ian Ran put on some mascrara and hosted the evening with style while DJ Jake Rudh spun some glitter rock magic.

YouWorkForThem 6-Year Anniversary Party @ Clubhouse Jager
Design nerds, hipsters, and music lovers all met in the middle this past Saturday night, when world-renowned graphic design gurus YouWorkForThem celebrated their 6th Anniversary, as well as the launch of their newly redesigned website. YWFT co-founder Michael Cina busted out the best of his crazy record collection to bring you impeccable sets of disco and boogie, while YWFT contributors Travis Stearns and Ben Hribar took turns making the crowd dance with their own special blends of sonic sexiness. Despite repeated requests for "Another One Bites the Dust," the crew held down the entire evening with style. Party-goers enjoyed awesome drink specials on Opulent Vodka, and almost everyone walked away with a sweet prize from YWFT, such as art prints, design books, t-shirts, DVDs and more. Some Digital Crushers got a bit too rowdy and didn't get home until 5am, but that's another story.

Level_13: Secret Level @ Altered Esthetics
It's been a while since I sat down in an art gallery with a glass of red wine and a cup of Cheetos and got to play Centipede on a vintage Atari console hooked up to an old TV set with a fake wood finish. I did just that at the opening party for Level_13: The Secret Level, an exhibit that opened last Friday at the Altered Esthetics Gallery. The biennial exhibit featured visual art from over 40 local and international artists inspired by classic video games like Arkanoid, Pac-Man, and Super Mario Brothers. Speaking of Mario, friends of mine at the show bought a couple of paintings illustrating what Mario would look like if he dressed like Scott Seekins (both summer and winter modes were shown). A limited edition Level_13 poster by Burlesque of North America was unveiled. Old school video game animations were projected onto the gallery walls and live music was provided by Caly McMorrow, Jobot and local DJ Mike the 2600 King. Despite everything that was going on, I still managed to have some interesting conversations. Among other things, Steve Ogdahl explained the basics of using microcontrollers and LEDs to make large illuminated displays with triangular pixels to show colorful video game images.

W Hotel Opening 9/18
Seems like there's a new hotel popping up downtown every other week. The most recent addition was the new W Minneapolis Hotel. At their opening party, the W received some celebrity visitors including a few Timberwolves, a former Viking or two, Molly Sims from the Las Vegas TV series and some American Idol contestants. After a purple carpet reception, I was set loose indoors, free to roam and find fun, trouble and free drinks.
Jazzing up the party were the amazing Sotu Performers. In keeping the 20's era theme (the Foshay Tower was built in 1929), these entertainers dressed as flappers and perked up the whole mood by dancing, flirting and effortlessly adding some charismatic zest. -Stephen Stephens

l'etoile sat down this week for a chat with Finnegans Founder Jacquie Berglund...
You are the founder of Finnegans, which is, amazingly, a non-profit beer company. Can you tell us what prompted you to start this?
Since being in college I remember always planning to do something in which I would leave this world a better place than when I got here. I have always had a passion for doing meaningful work that helps the greater good.
What sort of programs does Finnegans aim to help? What are your long term goals?
The Finnegan's mission is about helping to end poverty. We live in the wealthiest country in the world and do not feel it is acceptable that folks are unable to meet their basic needs. We donate funds to programs that are focused on alleviating poverty and are capacity building in nature. Long term - we hope to have Finnegans Irish Amber sold throughout the world and to have loads of other fun Finnegans products!!
This year's annual ShamROCK, put on by Finnegans, is shaping up to look like quite the rockin' ordeal - how did the ShamROCK come about, and what are you most excited for?
We created the music event Finnegans ShamROCK (formerly called Finnegans Summerfest' in 2007. Our goal was to create a branded event that was in alignment with our brand - good music, great beer, good fun and all for a great cause. All of the Finnegans profits from this event will be going to Heading Home Hennepin, a local community wide initiative to end homelessness in Hennepin County in the next 10 years.
Why should people drink Finnegan's?
People should drink Finnegans because it is a great tasting, local beer that does good.
If you weren't the mastermind behind Finnegan's, what would be your dream job?
I really can't imagine a job that I would love to do more than what I do with Finnegans...its an honest answer!

l'etoile sat down this week for a chat with Finnegans Founder Jacquie Berglund...
You are the founder of Finnegans, which is, amazingly, a non-profit beer company. Can you tell us what prompted you to start this?
Since being in college I remember always planning to do something in which I would leave this world a better place than when I got here. I have always had a passion for doing meaningful work that helps the greater good.
What sort of programs does Finnegans aim to help? What are your long term goals?
The Finnegan's mission is about helping to end poverty. We live in the wealthiest country in the world and do not feel it is acceptable that folks are unable to meet their basic needs. We donate funds to programs that are focused on alleviating poverty and are capacity building in nature. Long term - we hope to have Finnegans Irish Amber sold throughout the world and to have loads of other fun Finnegans products!!
This year's annual ShamROCK, put on by Finnegans, is shaping up to look like quite the rockin' ordeal - how did the ShamROCK come about, and what are you most excited for?
We created the music event Finnegans ShamROCK (formerly called Finnegans Summerfest' in 2007. Our goal was to create a branded event that was in alignment with our brand - good music, great beer, good fun and all for a great cause. All of the Finnegans profits from this event will be going to Heading Home Hennepin, a local community wide initiative to end homelessness in Hennepin County in the next 10 years.
Why should people drink Finnegan's?
People should drink Finnegans because it is a great tasting, local beer that does good.
If you weren't the mastermind behind Finnegan's, what would be your dream job?
I really can't imagine a job that I would love to do more than what I do with Finnegans...its an honest answer!
