Weekend What's What 4/1-4/6

We're officially putting our jackets into storage! Spring has sprung and at this rate we'll be complaining that it's too hot before you know it. Such is life. Easter weekend includes a rousing round of late night parties, saucy dance jams, live tuneage and delightful art to get you hoppin'. And while you may be too old to hunt for Easter eggs, you're certainly of age to seek out all the hidden gems the Twin Cities holds for you. We do, however, give you a free pass to eat as much candy as you'd like.

Brad Senne CD Release Show

@ Honey
205 E. Hennepin Ave

7:30-10pm / 21+ / Free

If you didn’t snag a copy of the critically acclaimed, Aerial Views, from MPLS urban folk jammer Brad Senne the first time it released in ‘09, don’t worry your pretty little acoustic-loving head. Tonight, the homegrown singer/songwriter re-releases his beloved album off Grain Belt Records with two new tracks featuring additional instrumental love by Ben Durrant of Crazy Beast Studios - home to artists Andrew Bird, Dosh and Roma di Luna. Senne’s songwriting talent and musical chops have been attracting local attention for years via both his solo career and his indie pop side project, Beight. Pick up your shiny new copy and enjoy a dreamy set by Senne (complete with full band) and special guests Communist Daughter (performing as a trio). After the show, stick around for Honey’s monthly gig, Bee Hive - a hot dance night featuring various vinyl spun by DJ Magnus Manchicken. Double the fun!

In case you haven't heard, l'etoile has buddied up with City Pages' brand new art and fashion blog, The Dressing Room! We'll be sharing content and also providing original pieces exclusive to City Pages, bringing even more attention to the awesome artists, performers, and fashion designers in the Twin Cities. We're super excited! Check out Kate Iverson's interview with local artist Jennifer Davis via the Dressing Room, and be sure to peruse the other fun content they've compiled. And don't forget to bookmark the site -- we predict that it's going to be a great resource for all things cool!

Fun fact: Jen is the girlfriend of musician Brad Senne (see listing above this one) and did the album art for his CD! Too cute!

Patterns Plants & Animals: New Work by Tynan Kerr + Andie Mazorol

@ Rogue Buddha Gallery
357 13th Ave NE

7-11pm / Free

If the characters in the collaborative show, Patterns Plants and Animals look familiar to you, it’s because they are. A hodgepodge of recycled pop cult references and historical emblems are brought to life inside homemade utopias and mystical framings. The pieces in local artists Tynan Kerr and Andie Mazorol’s latest collaborative exhibit are enigmatic - to say the least. Described as “intimate conversations” between two close friends, their joint works follow no pre-planned direction and - much like a real conversation - get lost in each other’s thoughts. Recent recipients of the Jerome Fellowship for Emerging Artists, the innovative duo are more than just peeps to watch, but community-oriented artists whose sweet mural work can be found on the walls of the 331 Club. The duo has also shown at hot local galleries like Fox Tax, Art of This and the now defunct Sellout Gallery. Join the artists and guest curator Emma Berg of and the Rogue Buddha Gallery for tonight’s visually stunning opening reception. Runs through May 1st.

Stop in to Spot Art Gallery tonight and take a gander at a cool new group show featuring the work of local artists Andrey Feldshteyn, Serik Kilmeshkenov, Bryant Locher, Cody Kiser, Merry Reimier, Connie Kasella, Spleee, BMF, and Karl Friedrich. We're especially excited to see what Bryant Locher has in store, as this is the first time he's shown paintings in a couple of years, instead focusing on creating innovative lighting design for the band Solid Gold and other projects. Tonight's opening at Spot Art will also feature live music by David Harland at 9pm and henna tattoo art by Judy Ostrowski.

Resident Artist VI: Creative Collaborations

@ Altered Esthetics
1224 Quincy St NE

Take at least one artist who has shown work at Altered Esthetics Gallery, add in some other artist’s wacky ideas, and viola -- a new collaborative exhibit is born. These arty mashups are the focus of tonight’s show which featuring artists Kara Hendershot & Summer Scharringhausen, Anathea Alberda & Heather Kim, Jennifer Andrus & Manny Castro and many more. Also included in the affair is the release party for graphic novella Continuity Guy drawn by Bud Burgy and written by Danno Klonowski. The book will be for sale, along with the original art. Who knows who you’ll meet to “collaborate” with (wink wink)! Through May 1.

Jacob Kassay, Paolo Arao, Abbey Williams

@ Franklin Art Works
1021 East Franklin Avenue

Three New York artists open solo shows tonight at Franklin Art Works that will dazzle and impress. In the main gallery, Jacob Kassay’s silver-plated paintings and 16mm film employ innovative techniques. The process his canvases go through while turning silver causes the canvas to burn, creating a cool visual effect. From here his solo show goes to Paris, Italy, and Brussels, so see it state-side while you can! Paolo Arao’s Between the Lights features charcoal drawings of concert crowds in the Project Space, while Abbey Williams’ Three Graces shows in the Video Gallery. Three videos depict the artist posing as famous figures in pop culture and historical paintings. Through May 22.

The competition identifies the one man in the Twin Cities who represents the best of the best from the perspectives of community involvement, personality, intelligence and fitness. Well, if you ask us, Brian embodies all of these! Our boy not only volunteers his time for l'étoile, but also does a ton of charity work including being the Vice President on the St. Paul Festival Association board, 12 Bars of Christmas charity event co-organizer, and YMCA volunteer. He's also hilarious, adorable, and one of the most kind-hearted and fun dudes we've ever met.

The best part? If Brian wins, he gets to donate $2500 to his choice of charity, and has even committed $1000 of his personal winnings to l'etoile, so we can put together outfits to donate to another great non-profit, Dress for Success!
