Weekend What's What 7/30-8/4

OH, THE DRAMA!

This weekend kicks off one of the Midwest's largest and quirkiest performing arts events, the two-week long Minnesota Fringe Festival! We can't help but get excited when theatrics are in the air; the costumes, the makeup, and the outrageous antics of people who seem to have no "off" switch. Take a cue from zany theater-types of the Twin Cities and unleash your dramatic side this weekend. Whether it be through daring fashion choices, making a grand entrance at party, or simply finding the confidence to go somewhere you've never gone, meet people you've never met, and have an adventurous and fabulous time doing it!

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: PATRICK WOLF

In these hard times, we at l'étoile like to turn to androgyny, and more specifically the androgynous boy-wonder Patrick Wolf. The love child of Billy Idol, Jack Fairy and Liza Minnelli, Wolf has the fashion sense of a mythical elf on acid and his swarthy, yet hopelessly angelic vocals invoke Sisters of Mercy's Andrew Eldritch -- not far off considering their shared English roots. In Wolf's electronic classical sound, – based in part by his early childhood church choir involvement – one can hear a diverse mix of ukulele and viola with glitchy computer blips and ambient soundscapes. Making guest appearances as a viola player for the band Chicks on Speed, Wolf has brushed shoulders with a variety of musical talents including alt-country goddess, Marianne Faithful. His latest album, The Bachelor, features spoken word from an actress who bares a spooky resemblance to Wolf, Tilda Swinton, and includes catchy sinster-pop gems like the political punk anthem “Hard Times.”

Q&A: Former Minneapoline Blogger Tyler Stevermer

by Jahna Peloquin

Anyone spot Tyler Stevermer, former Minneapoline street fashion blogger, in Mpls a couple of weeks back? I spotted him at both the "Intersections" opening at the Goldstein and the Lookbook show at 501 Club, wearing this fabulous ensemble:

[Image by Ellen Dahl via The Minneapoline]

Apparently he is doing quite well since he's been in San Francisco, with quite a few projects going. I did a mini-interview with him to catch us up on all he's been up to:

What are you doing in town?

It had been well over a year since I had left and hadn’t revisited. I suddenly decided I needed to reflect on my perception: View my new life through my old perspective and my old life through my new perspective. Basically, I just spent a week having an existential crisis and getting drunk with my best friends.

What have you been keeping busy with since you moved away from Minneapolis?

I left in May of 2008. I kind of just ran away after graduating... I loved Minneapolis but knew I needed an adventure. I didn’t have any idea where to go so I ended up in New York. I fluttered around for a while until I moved to San Francisco (where I’ve been for nearly a year now). Currently I have my fingers in a lot of different pies. I work full time as an interior designer and branding director. In my down time I help out with the Harputs Own collection, have started doing a bit of writing for [Paris-based] Lurve magazine, and I volunteer with a fashion house that benefits the developmentally disabled called Helpers House of Couture. ...I’ve also been watching a lot of Golden Girls.

Tell me about your jacket. It's vintage, yes?

I found it at an AMAZING vintage boutique in San Francisco. There’s a guy there who knows exactly what I need. I went in one day and saw him dash directly into the back room, out he came with a cropped, quilted satin tuxedo jacket. He claimed Jeremy Scott had been in earlier and was studying it. I figured that was probably just his sales pitch but I loved the jacket anyway. From the same store I got a ridiculous pair of harem pants, they’re a single piece of fabric wrapped around to create each pant leg. Right after I had bought them, the designers at Givenchy had called up the store requesting the same pair to study for their next collection. The store owner said the designers would pay whatever I asked if they could have them. I decided to keep the pants for myself... I guess I’m a little bit of an asshole about my clothes.

I saw you earlier at the "Intersections" opening visiting with some past instructors. What did you think of the exhibition?

I used to work for the Goldstein during college and my former honors program advisor was the co-curator of the "Intersections" exhibit, so I was really happy to be in town for the opening. I think the Goldstein is an amazing resource for the Twin Cities. Their collection of mid-century fashion is unbelievable and you can actually make an appointment to see anything in their enormous archive (I recommend asking to see the Norman Norell and Pauline Trigere pieces).

Michael Cina: Ways of Seeing

@ 1st Amendment Gallery
1101 Stinson Blvd
Basement Studio
Northeast Minneapolis

7pm-10pm / Free

When we first met the amazingly talented Mike Cina of youworkforthem.com, we were an awkward fan girl who could do nothing but stammer and blush. These days, we're lucky enough to call this internationally renowned graphic designer a friend and collaborator, so you can imagine our excitement when First Amendment announced a solo show of Mike Cina's original paintings. Though best known for his digital work, this local phenom has long been creating art on both canvas and paper. Ways of Seeing will feature over 150 abstract works of all shapes and sizes that burst with brightly hued nuance. Cina's thoughtful use of color and balance -- a trait that's exhibited in his graphic work as well -- comes across as energetic, eclectic, and quite fearless in its experimentation. Priced to sell, works on paper start at a mere $20, a small price to pay for totally sweet original art a la Mike Cina!

GUEST BLOGGER: A TINY MACHINE

Beth Hammarlund drools over Stella McCartney.

Stellaaaaaa!

The Stella McCartney Resort images were released a few weeks ago, but I'm still drooling over them. It certainly doesn't hurt that the photos feature Anouck Lepère, one of my favorite models. But the collection is so fun and wearable that I keep pulling them up over and over again. So it's probably time to post a few here.

Weekend What's What 7/16-7/21

ALL TOGETHER NOW

This weekend is definitely one of those weekends that we can hardly stand, simply because there are too many killer events to attend. It seems the recession has created an upsurge of D.I.Y. party-throwing that relies heavily on creative theming and good old fashioned camaraderie, and we can't help but love it! From animalistic masquerade parties to vigilante artists, the Twin Cities is ablaze with grassroots energy, and this weekend's good times are yours for the partaking!

@ Magers and Quinn Booksellers

7:30pm / Free

From the days of Heart and Suzi Quatro to modern bad-ass chick musicians, The Donnas and Peaches, there's no denying that the sisters were born to rock. The new book from Ex-MPLS rocker, Jessica Hopper (Andromeda Strain), The Girls Guide to Rocking is the ultimate pragmatic DIY guide to starting a band, writing songs, booking gigs and the secrets behind the rock n' roll biz. Tonight, Hopper makes a stop at Magers & Quinn on her 22-city book tour to read from the book loaded with star-power chick rocker quotes including inspiring words from Kate Bush, Joan Jett and Stevie Nicks. Plus, don't miss a special appearance from Laurie Lindeen, music novel author and member of classic, pre-riot grrrl era Minneapolis group, Zuzu's Petals.

FRIDAY ART PICK: DASH SNOW

This week l'étoile pays respect to the late, great, controversial artist, Dash Snow, who reportedly died of a heroin overdose at the Lafayette Hotel in Manhattan late Monday night. Called the mythical figurehead of NY's Lower East Side art scene, Snow's early work consisted of graffiti pieces as a member of the notorious Irak crew and lead to confrontational Polaroids filled with visceral, unfiltered and often semi-pornographic images of his friends at coke parties and orgies. In 2006, the Wall Street Journal named him as one of the “23-Year Old Masters,” but Snow is perhaps best known for politico statements in both the Charles Saatchi 2006 piece featured in USA Today (where he covered 45 newspaper articles about American police and hung them in a collage with his own unmentionable bodily fluid) and the Nest Installation, a large scale installment involving a room covered in a nest of ripped up phone books and more bodily fluids. Snow's shocking, violent freedom art stood for a generation of angst-ridden teens and early twenty-somethings and offered insight into a decadent lifestyle in a sort of honest and raw way that even the iconic photographers he's been compared to (Nan Goldin and Larry Clark) fell short in truly capturing.

@ Secret Location
West Bank

10pm-2am / probably costs money

This month’s Pegasus has a sci-fi theme, which gets the ladies of l’étoile crazily excited! DJs Teen Hugs, Gay Pain_Denny Hecker and vincent van vogue get you sliding across the futuristic dance floor. There will be a “presentation” on the systems of the universe, which we hope involves clothes being taken off, and a performance about astrological harmonies. JCAR has promised to get naked, and our favorite Towanda is promising to please. Obviously, dress to impress.

COOL LINK: TARGET WOMEN: SARAH HASKINS

Target Women is a segment of InfoMania on Current TV, but the star is Sarah Haskins. Making fun of everything the media tosses at women, from Barbies, to Lifetime television, to laundry and hair commercials, Sarah points out the ridiculousness of media’s idea of what women want and throws it back at them. She’s lovable, hilarious and spot-on, and we totally dig her. Plan on spending a lot of time laughing at her video spots—we couldn’t stop ourselves.

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: GLASVEGAS

Scottish-rockers Glasvegas’ very much ballyhooed debut album has finally been garnering some steam here in the States. These guys pull off a super sweet mix of Interpol and U2 (if they wrote anything good these days) with modern indie rock twist, resulting in some seriously solid hooks. They certainly don’t hold anything back in the grandeur of their style and sound pretty much the opposite of lo-fi. Plus, all the lyrics, particularly the campy ones stolen directly from nursery rhymes, sound about a million times cooler with that thick, Groundskeeper Willie-esque Scottish accent.

THIS WEEK'S FILM IS BUCKAROO BANZAI

GUEST BLOGGER: A TINY MACHINE

Beth Hammarlund admires the work of photographer Melanie Pullen.

Someone call the fashion police!

Lady Gaga's video for "Paparazzi" immediately reminded me of Melanie Pullen's series of photographs "High Fashion Crime Scenes." The shots are recreations of actual crime scene photos, but the models are outfitted in high fashion. I'm not sure whether these photos were inspiration for Gaga's short film, but if anything else, I'm pleased that the video reminded me of how completely awesome Pullen is.

The event is a sort of fashion market that showcases local designers and boutiques, as well as interior design from the IMS showrooms. We have limited booth space for fashion designers and boutiques to sell their wares. E-mail kate@letoilemagazine.com for more info on how you can be involved or click below to pre-order your tickets!
