Weekend What's What 12/25-12/30

JINGLE BELL ROCKIN’

This weekend is a bit light considering it’s sandwiched precisely between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but we have to admit we’re looking forward to “taking it easy” for once. Luckily the Twin Cities are music-obsessed so there is no shortage of sonic waves to be absorbed this time around, despite the obvious lack of art events. From big-time techno producer Claude Von Stroke to the chilled out indie-folk sounds of such groups as Dark Dark Dark, Matt Latterell, and The Parlour Suite; and from ‘70s glam rock cover bands to crunked-out holiday jam fests, this weekend's musical landscape has a little something for everyone!

Check back on Monday for our New Year’s Eve event guide, a comprehensive list of all the coolest parties and NYE shenanigans going down this coming Wednesday!

FRIDAY ART PICK: RUSS MILLS

This UK based artist/illustrator has definitely captured our attention in 2008 with his graphic novel meets Jackson Pollock-esque artwork. Fine lines and mischievous absurdity collide with a schizophrenic sort of beauty. The artist’s dark and moody color schemes and seemingly violent bursts of abstraction are as delicious as they are curious. Keep your eyes peeled for this one in ‘09!

New for Spring: Dip-dyed Tights by Calpurnia Peach

The always-busy duo behind Twin Cities fashion line Calpurnia Peach is known for its tights screen-printed with its original designs. Now, they're offering a new take on their best-seller: Dip-dyed tights. I received my first pair from the Peach girls, specially made in a magenta/plum colorway. My favorite part about the tights is how they get darker as they get closer to the bottom, working well with darker shoes and adding a great pop of color right where the skirt hem hits.

Eclecticoiffeur used mustard/brown tights, from Calpurnia Peach's Fall 2009 collection, for a promotional shoot for the collection on Friday. Above is an untouched preview of that shoot, photographed by Nic Marshall. Interested in some for yourself? Contact the designers at calpurniapeach@gmail.com.

A TINY MACHINE MONDAY

Another post from our fave Sci-Fi Beauty Blogger, A Tiny Machine!

I’ve Got Your Indie Credibility Right Here

It's not a breakthrough statement to observe that much of our power as citizens comes from our voices as consumers. By choosing where we spend our money, we make statements about our values and beliefs in an objective and effective way. I make efforts to be socially and politically conscious with my spending, but I also buy a lot of Go International blouses from Target and cheap dresses from Forever 21.

However, in the current economic climate, I'm trying to be more aware of where and how I spend my money, and what political and social statements that those purchases make. Though I'm still pumping my fair share of dollar bills back into the national economy, I'm also making a concerted effort to support smaller independent artists and boutiques. And since online shopping is my crack, I've been spending way more than my fair share of time on sites like Etsy and Supermarket. Here are a few of my favorite discoveries.

Necklush in Charcoal Grey (Supermarket): Anything that's too tight around my neck immediately turns me from a relatively reasonable 27 year-old woman into a petulant child. "Mom! Get it off!" she cried as she clawed helplessly at the neckline of her embroidered holiday turtleneck. So I love that this circular scarf can be worn nice and loose. The $55 price tag is more than I usually spend on an easy-to-misplace outerwear accessory, but that's because I forgot my cashmere Burberry scarf in the movie theater when I saw Marie Antoinette and I haven't really gotten over it. But this might just be the item that gets me off of the Target outerwear train. Plus, it reminds me of this squid ink spaghetti that I had at the Loring Pasta Bar a couple of years ago. I never knew that dark gray noodles could be so delicious.

Click below for many more indie shopping picks from A Tiny Machine, and also a pretty good Gwen Stefani rant!

THURSDAY DECEMBER 18TH

Ra'mon-Lawrence Going Away Bash

@ Chambers Hotel
Art Bar (Main Floor)
901 Hennepin Ave
Minneapolis

9pm / Free

First the rockers (Lori Barbero) then the designers?! MPLS is losing some talented and recognizable scenesters lately. Lets just blame it on the weather, shall we? Tonight, amazingly talented designer, budding superstar, and fashionista extraordinaire Ra'mon Lawrence Coleman bids the Twin Cities adieu - in true, super fancy Ra'mon style, of course! Help send him off at this bon voyage bash where fabulous attire is not just encouraged, it's required! Show your appreciation for the flashy flavor Ra'mon has contributed over the years to locally designed, unique wear as you sip cocktails and enjoy misty colored memories of stylish nights and unforgettable parties. Then join the host and his crew as the party continues across the street at the Saloon with primo dancing and plenty more cocktails. Don't cry too hard though, you'll be seeing more Ra'mon than you can handle in 2009, wink-wink! Good luck Mr. Coleman, l'étoile loves you long time!

Editors note: I first met Ra'mon when he was brand new to Minneapolis, fresh off the plane from Chicago. After many Myspace conversations we met up at the St. Paul Art Crawl for the first time, and a new friendship was born. Watching Ra'mon's career in the Twin Cities flourish has been an inspiring and marvelous journey to witness. From designing for Target, to participating in art shows, fashion shows, Voltage, and finally producing his own solo show last year; this incredibly hardworking, brilliant and feisty young designer is on his way to being the next big thing, and I can't wait to see what happens next! -Kate Iverson

Naked Raygun

@ Triple Rock Social Club
629 Cedar Ave
Minneapolis

9pm / 21+ / $15

With a decade's worth of unfaltering rock shows under their belt, it's no wonder the West Bank's favorite punk and hipster haven would continue their month-long anniversary party with a headlining act like post-punk 80's legends, Naked Raygun. Controversial and political, this Chicago-based band helped launch a unique genre that infused melodic sounds with hardcore punk and influenced countless bands from the '90s on into today's scene. Opening acts The Arrivals and The Framed set the mood for a revival, punk style, that both old schoolers and punk fledglings can delight in. So, get your mosh on and raise a glass to another ten years of the Triple Rock, and unapologetic rock.

A TINY MACHINE MONDAY

Another post from our favorite Sci-Fi/Beauty Blogger, A Tiny Machine!

What I want for Christmas even more than Shoes

I love dinosaurs. To the point that I've long been considering getting a triceratops tattoo. Dinosaurs are that important to me. And now there is nothing that I want more than a pet baby robot dinosaur to call my own. Enter Pleo, the cutest little animatronic dino that the world has ever seen. True, I forsee problems with this little guy getting along with my cats (which are not animatronic), but I'm sure they could work through their differences.

The Turducken

@ Bedlam Theatre

A turducken is a festive holiday meal of a chicken stuffed in a duck stuffed in a turkey. Yum. Every other possible crevice is stuffed with...stuffing. While we have no idea why this continues to exist, we know why the Bedlam is putting on a play called The Turducken: just like this meaty entrée, it is a play within a play within a play. Expect Christmas wizards, ham salesmen, Santa standup, and Chekhov’s The Seagull, complete with singing and dancing. Especially for this show, the kitchen has cooked up a four-course meal in true Bedlam dinner theater style. Through December 21st.

FRIDAY ART PICK: JENNY SCHMID

If you're unfamiliar with local printmaker and l'etoile fave, Jenny Schmid, now is the perfect time to school yourself. Schmid's book, The Vistas of Gender Utopia, released through her self-owned print studio Bikini Press International, is a comprehensive look at her prints inspired by iconoclastic images and pop satire. With over-sized bodies, luminous colors, mismatched objected around every corner and often a sailor girl vibe, Schmid's style is an exploration of reality meets daydreams. Her work combines digital elements with computer animation and historical images to create the look of a comic book and the feel of a print. As an assistant professor at the U of M's department of Art, Schmid has been teaching her printmaking skills to the next generation and acts as an inspiration to countless art students through her devotion to gender politics and feminist ideals.

Bonus: The Vistas of Gender Utopia would make a great holiday gift for anyone interested in the ever evolving art of local printmaking.

A TINY MACHINE MONDAY

Another post from our fave beauty/Sci-Fi Blogger, A Tiny Machine. Click HERE for more posts.

The other day I tried to list all of the connections between the Whedonverse and How I Met Your Mother. And kids, I left out two big ones. In season two, both Morena Baccarin (Inara from Firefly and Serenity) and Tom Lenk (Andrew from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) guest star in the episode "Swarley." I'm starting to get a little overwhelmed by all of the overlap. Am I missing something? Is Joss Whedon a secret HIMYM executive producer?

Big news for fans of Fables. ABC wants to adapt the comic for the small screen. I've been hoping for a Fables television series for a while, but I'd been crossing my fingers for HBO or Showtime (the latter of which is developing a series based on the now defunct Exterminators series, which I started reading by accident and fell in love with). Nonetheless, beggars can't be choosers and I'm just excited that Fables will be coming into homes across the country. Let's hope that this series gets the great casting and production that it deserves.

I haven't been able to find out much about the Preacher movie, other than the fantastic Sam Mendes will be directing. Hopefully, we'll start hearing some juicy casting details soon. Here's hoping that the project actually happens within the next couple of years. Maybe he'll start production once he finishes filming Middlemarch.
