Weekend What's What 12/1-12/3

THURSDAY DECEMBER 1ST

How To Cheat

@ Gremlin Theatre
2400 University Ave West
St. Paul

7:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. / $20 – $18 fringe button holders – $ half your age under 30

We all know the theater scene here in the Twin Cities is second to none, but it’s especially inspiring to see work from local writers being produced with greater regularity. Local playwright Alan Berks had a Fringe Festival hit a few years back with this title, and an expanded and updated version of the play brings together the talents of a stellar creative team – including local fashion designers Maritza Ramirez and Max Lohrbach – for a night of exhilarating theater. How To Cheat explores themes of infidelity, regret, sex, and the enduring difficulty of creating real connections. Leavened with a sprinkling of comedy and the acting talents of local stars Randy Reyes and Candy Simmons, this limited engagement show (only 9 performances!) is not to be missed. FYI we do not recommend actually cheating, but we do recommend How to Cheat!

FRIDAY DECEMBER 2ND (THROUGH SUNDAY)

Minneapolis Underground Film Festival

@ MCAD
2501 Stevens Ave.
Minneapolis

7 p.m. (additional film times vary) / $9 Ticket - $49 Festival Pass - $15 After Party

The fourth annual MUFF sticks to the goal of presenting works that don’t fit into the Cineplex, and may even be a little too out-there for the standard festival circuit. The often bizarre assortment of over 30 full-length and countless short film offerings are likely to shock, endear, or surprise at every turn. As usual, the festival gives special emphasis to an array of works by local filmmakers who may not have an opportunity to be seen elsewhere. Standouts include the uncanny and hypnotic Invincible Force, a strange – and international award winning - chronicle of director Dan Schneidkraut altering and transforming his own body over the course of a 90 day period – shows Sunday at 2:45 p.m. Also intriguing is the opening night offering 30 Films in 30 Days in which filmmaker Tyler Jensen collaborated with hundreds of local talents to write, shoot and edit an original film every day for a month. Saying the other offerings are eclectic would be grossly understated--there is a bloody supernatural disco film, a documentary on transgender transitioning, and a horror/comedy/existential crisis film about a Muslim Dominatrix possessed by a Jinn! After-parties with complimentary beer and wine and music by awesome DJ’s are planned both Friday and Saturday for some after movie dancin’ and drinkin’. If you’re looking to expand your cinematic horizons or just want to check out what local filmmakers have been up to lately there is something for you to see at MUFF!

FRIDAY DECEMBER 2ND

Amelia Biewald: Into The Woods

@ Rosalux Gallery
1400 Van Buren Street NE #195
Minneapolis

7 p.m. – 11 p.m. / Free

Artist Amelia Biewald creates powerfully strange works that explore the idea of nature taken one step beyond what is...natural. These supernatural constructs are unnervingly beautiful reminders that the line between the fantastic and the gruesome is in the eye of the beholder. Using painting, sculpture and installation, the artist sometimes works in traditional mediums but more often transforms decorative arts by layering levels of meaning onto familiar objects. Portions of this show are inspired by Catherine the Great - and the rumor/myth that she died when crushed by an equine lover – mon dieu! Appropriately, the power, beauty and romance of horses and the female form is explored in various ways throughout this work. An obsession with subterranean landscapes and the eerie beauty of the underground world informs another series, including installation works that recreate the organic forms and textures of caves and inhabit them with distinctive creatures. See for yourself what the artist describes as “crypto-equestrian and crypto-vegetal hybrid beings...alluring, yet dangerous”. Um, yes please!

FRIDAY DECEMBER 2ND

TWO: XYandZ Gallery's 2-Year Anniversary Show

@ XYandZ Gallery
3258 Minnehaha
Minneapolis

7 p.m. to 10 p.m. / Free

Happy Birthday to XYandZ Gallery! With an impressive collection of dual and solo shows under its belt, the South Minneapolis contemporary art gallery is throwing creative caution to the wind by inviting 15 previous exhibitors back, but this time as curators--not artists. Exploring relationships between artists is the basis of this eclectic group show, where each "curator" will be highlighting works by two artists of their choosing: one emerging and one established. The variety of genres and styles from both local and national artists is a bit staggering, so there will certainly be something for art fans of every stripe. See work by international street artist White Cocoa, veteran train writer buZ Blurr, local fave Jennifer Davis, and oh-so-much more. Not to mention, nothing says "I Love You" like buying art for the holidays (hint, hint!).

Perhaps best-known for his iconic Brickman piece perched above the Loring Corner's office building, local artist Steve Olson has been a fixture in the scene since the early '80s where his underground shows seized the walls of abandoned warehouses, condemned buildings and mid-construction high rises. From canvas paintings to carvings on wood, and sculpture, Olson has been depicting his interpretations of social justice issues, has displayed work at mayor's offices, the State Capitol and local public schools, and has even teamed up with the Family Housing Fund. His latest exhibit not only “marks his foray full circle” back into cutting edge art but showcases an evolved language into diversity. Peep new work as you enjoy live tunes by Dandylion Warpaint.
