But definitely do whatever it takes to be among the ranks of the first who catch this weekend's annual MCAD Art Sale. Easily one of the most anticipated (and affordable) art events of the year, the MCAD Art Sale features thousands of locally-produced artworks from mixed media to paintings, sculpture to photography, and oh-so-much more, all originally created by established artists, emerging artists and cutting-edge artists on the cusp of breaking into the art scene. With such reasonably priced pieces, it's easy to expand your local art collection and maybe even pre-Christmas shop for the art enthusiast on your list. Thursday's preview event for avid collectors may cost a pretty penny, but Friday admission goes down to $25 and Saturday it's free and open to the public. Get your paws on a local masterpiece created by the art stars of tomorrow--trust us, your walls will thank you.

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 17TH

The Rope / Blue Sky Blackout / Aaron & The Sea

@ Hell’s Kitchen
80 S 9th St.
Minneapolis

10 p.m. – 2 a.m. / 21+ / $5

For a party of prodigious proportions get your ass down to Hell’s Kitchen this Friday to see some cool cats play catchy music with a dark undertone. Local band The Rope have fronted some of the most exciting shows of the past few months, in the process building serious buzz with their propulsive post-punk. Comparisons to Joy Division and Sisters of Mercy are understandable, but we think they’re providing a unique take on the much loved gothic-dance sound that deserves new life. The affable dudes of Blue Sky Blackout have one of the catchiest EP’s of the year – their John Hughes release – and working with their great catalogue of songs they always provide a highly energetic live show. BSB’s tunes skillfully get you dancing and may earworm into your head for days after. Minneapolis duo Aaron & the Sea create ominous soundscapes with layered vocals and unexpected instrumental flourishes. Their low tempo sonic creations also manage to incorporate a striking counterpoint of bold percussion, making them a band you should experience live. Practice your best Ian Curtis dance moves and get down to Hell’s Kitchen to embrace the dark grooves!

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 18TH

Paul Mpagi Sepuya “Studio Work” & Eric Baudelaire “Sugar Water”

@ Franklin Art Works
1021 East Franklin Ave.
Minneapolis

6 p.m. – 8 p.m. / Free

Two internationally recognized artists bring recent work to the Franklin Art Works gallery and screening room for an exhibit this week. With “Studio Work” Paul Sepuya collects the material and photographs that defined his residency at The Studio Museum in Harlem to create a unique glimpse into the private work space of an artist. The exhibit incorporates both installations and mounted photographs to provide a multi-faceted experience. “Sugar Water” is Paris-based artist Eric Baudelaire’s single channel video projection which uses a fictitious Metro stop as a venue for a hypnotic series of images meticulously pasted in sequence using traditional billboard installation methods. As the images change a provocative story unfolds; exploring themes of political violence using a distinctly deliberate visual language. Both of these artists have an impressive pedigree of exhibitions in international venues, so we expect this to be an exceptional evening of art. Come on down and satisfy your artistic sweet tooth!

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 18TH

Slum Lord: Kickstarter Launch Party

@ Hell’s Kitchen
80 S 9th St.
Minneapolis

10 p.m. – 2 a.m. / +21 / $5

It used to be you either had to max out your credit cards or convince the ‘rents that you’re the next Spielberg to finance your own independent production. That was before Kickstarter came along. The popular funding vehicle helps crowdsource financing for all kinds of creative endeavors and has given birth to some really awesome productions. Minneapolis creatives Todd Pitman and Noah Milligan are kicking-off a campaign to create a single camera comedy about a ridiculous Minneapolis landlord and his – presumably hilarious – tenants. If our experience with terrible landlords is any indication, there’s some comedy gold to be mined here! To get the ball rolling and celebrate the launch, the creators have lined up a top-notch roster of local artists. Powerful songstress Mayda, dance rock outfit UMAMI, electro pop maven Vague-à-bonde and art noise rockers Theeves will provide live entertainment and Hell’s Kitchen will offer great late night food and drink specials. Plus, you get to sneak a peek at footage from Slum Lord and see what all the fuss is about. Do your part to support a comedy series in its infancy while rocking out to excellent local music!

It’s great to see HOTTEA transition their work from the street to a gallery setting without losing the immediacy and impact we’ve come to expect. The exhibit consists of 5 new pieces – with one stunning piece hanging from the ceiling – and uses over 4,000 pieces of yarn in a gamut of colors to create an immersive viewing experience. The salon will also be celebrating their Fall hair collection SPECTRE so you can get inspiration on a fabulous new ‘do and sip a glass o' wine while you peep the art!

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 19TH

Making Progress

@ Gallery at Fox Tax
503 1st Ave NE
Minneapolis

7 – 10 p.m. / free

This Saturday don't miss the latest exhibit curated by guest John Alspach of BroadCast Exhibitions. For Making Progress, artists Kristina Mooney and Andy DuCett join forces to create a show that uses photography and illustration to rearrange our culture's past. Like the incog pages of a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure book, DuCett and Mooney's pieces offer a shift in reality, placing “a vague ending into a punchline or a dead end into a new beginning.” For this exhibit, DuCett edits Polaroids, adding characters or setting to change how the event is remembered. Mooney's work is buried in architecture, constructing and demolishing civilizations and exploring the concepts of “disaster and optimism.”

Shake that ass and belt along to forgotten tracks by dope artists like Ace of Base, Outkast, TLC, Aaliya, and even those lesbian fakers, T.A.T.U., spun by resident DJs Snakebite and Cloud and special guest DJ Dick Pic. Plus, sip down tasty two buck PBRs, enjoy drink specials on well drinks and the mysterious Pacey's Punch, and make sure to dress to impress Vanilla Ice for photo booth action.
