Weekend What's What 1/27-1/29

CABIN FEVER

Is it still winter? Yep. And we're still a couple months away from the spring thaw, so buck up Twin Cities--there's no point in hibernating! It may be chilly, you may feel the urge to hide under a bundle of blankets, you may even say you're "sick." But we know better. Brush of the S.A.D. and venture forth, there are plenty of hot times to be had this weekend!

FRIDAY ART PICK: KRISTIN SCHUE

What's l'etoile looking at this week?

Kristin Schue has been actively engaged on the art scene in the Twin Cities for over a decade, and her delicate layers of collage and mixed media have an antique charm to them that capture the viewer in a memory that might as well be their own for the familiarity of it. She is one-part photographer, one-part multimedia artist, and the two often go hand in hand as she creates her collage pieces. At the heart of Schue's work is a story--the narrative of whatever her subject is. It is the story, in the end, that makes her work precious--and well worth checking out at her Northrup King Building studio. Perhaps next Thursday during 1st Thursdays in the Art District?

FRIDAY JANUARY 28TH

Street as Source: Wing Young Huie and Richard Copley

@ IFP Minnesota
2446 University Ave. W.
St. Paul

5:30 p.m. / Free

For the indulgent people watcher in all of us, photographers Wing Young Huie and Richard Copley present Street as Source, a collection of images fueled by the drama, humor, irony, and transitory but perfect converging of elements in space that is day to day life. Known for his street photography projects and ethnographic studies along Lake Street and University Avenue, Wing Young Huie strives to capture authentic moments in an age where digitally-enhanced photographs reign supreme. In a similar vein, Richard Copley has used the same Nikon FM2 film camera and black-and-white film for 30 years, continuously chasing the poetic realism and mystery of a world ever composed – at its core – of light and shadow, structure and people. See how these two photographers’ styles contrast and converge at IFP Minnesota, where Street as Source will run through mid-March.

Heroes: A Benefit for Local Recording Artists

@ Varsity Theater
1308 4th St. SE
Minneapolis

8 p.m. / $10 / 21+

On Christmas Eve, we all lost a little bit of faith in humanity when the studio of The Alarmists’ Eric Lovold was burglarized, resulting in the loss of thousands of dollars of recording equipment and masters for the upcoming albums of local artists Kicks & Spurs and Brian DeRemer. Fortunately for our hearts and souls, Twin Citizens have never been ones to put up with crap like that, so Lovold and his friends are hosting a concert to offset the costs of re-recording and releasing the two stolen albums. The Alarmists, Brian DeRemer, Chris Koza, Kicks & Spurs, and White Light Riot will be performing throughout the evening, with Solid Gold DJ Sets between bands. Go. It’s the perfect opportunity to support the local music scene we love so dearly – and to say a big “eff you” to Yuletide scoundrels.

FRIDAY JANUARY 28TH

CLAPS, Blue Sky Blackout, Mercurial Rage, Aaron and the Sea

@ Cause
3001 Lyndale Ave. S.
Minneapolis

9:30 p.m. / $5

Always a contender when it comes to killer local rock shows, Cause’s Friday line-up brings together CLAPS, Blue Sky Blackout, Mercurial Rage, and Aaron and the Sea for our head-banging pleasure. A rabbit-quick rundown of why you should see all of these bands: CLAPS is so good, they make us long for the return of a genre (minimal synth, somewhat like Depeche Mode) we didn’t even know existed; Blue Sky Blackout is like the ideal bad-boy: cool, fashionable, a helluvalota fun, and just the right amount of rock-godlike testosterone; Mercurial Rage wants you to have a good time, and perhaps the only thing they’re better at doing is recreating the glory of a '70s coke ballad; and Aaron and the Sea’s jumpy, soulful, and utterly loveable songs more than live up to the band’s wistfully adorable moniker. See you there!

COOL LINK: THE TANGENTIAL

What's l'etoile lookin' at on the web this week?

In the vein of McSweeny's, The Awl and Thought Catalog comes a world class, yet local-hearted creative collective that puts humor in its place. Enjoy the sardonic antidotes of local writers including sarcastress Becky Lang, man-about-town Jay Gabler and the sassy Katie Sisneros. A verbally clever dose of creative non-fiction – think David Sedaris – the blog is a hilar twist on work-a-day rituals, ribald bits of advice and thoughts on societal norms we usually keep to ourselves with posts such as “How to Convince People You're Interesting,” “An Interview with My College Self Regarding the New Weed Soda,” “The 10 Most Unflattering Pictures of Myself” and “Worst Box Lunches Ever,” it's like reading the private journal of the super verbose friend you always wished you had. Totally one of our fave daily web stops! Don't miss this soon-to-be ubiquitous, hip gem from our local literary corner.

SATURDAY JANUARY 29TH

David Zink Yi: Horror Vacui

@ Midway Contemporary Art
527 2nd Ave. SE.
Minneapoli

7 p.m. / Free

Depending on the context (and the accuracy of Wikipedia), a horror vacui can mean a fear of empty spaces (literally), the filling of the entire surface of an artwork with detail (visual art-ily), or the idea that nature abhors a vacuum, and therefore empty space is always trying to suck in matter to avoid being empty (scientifically). It’s also the name of the new solo exhibition by photographer, sculptor, and videographer David Zink Yi that opens Saturday at Midway Contemporary Art. Investigating the complex structures of cultural identity and the tensions between reality, materiality, and the dissolving of narrative interpretation, the exhibit will feature sculptural and photographic work, as well as a two-channel video installation, also titled “Horror Vacui.” We’re anxious to see what context (if any) Yi has chosen to represent in his work; no matter what, we bet it’ll be strange and profound in the best ways possible.

Opera Night Out: Mary Stuart

@ Sakura
350 Saint Peter St.
St. Paul

10:30 p.m. / 21+
(Opening Night performance at the Ordway 8 p.m.)

Just because Mary Stuart married the man who quite possibly murdered her second husband and was convicted of treason for plotting to assassinate her cousin doesn’t mean we shouldn’t throw a dance party in her honor. Or at least in honor of the Minnesota Opera’s rendition of the tale of Mary Stuart. Following Saturday’s opening performance, eat, drink, and be merry at Sakura, where you can partake in a variety of royal festivities, from dancing to Radio K DJs to mingling with opera imperials to indulging in drink specials and complimentary treats to sitting for a portrait with Queen Mary herself beneath the dueling flags of Scotland and Britain (creepy, but totally awesome). By all means enjoy the spoils, just please, take a lesson from history and keep your daggers in your corset (so to speak). Want to check out the opera? We fully endorse it. Become a Tempo member and score $30 tickets to Mary Stuart plus access to a number of cool special events and discounts throughout the year.

Layer up and brave the chill because this weekend's bursting at the seams with hot, hot art, music and more. Would you expect anything less from the Twin Cities? We think not.

FRIDAY ART PICK: THE NEW GRAPHIC

What's l'etoile lookin' at on the web this week?

We're rather swoony towards just about anything that comes from the brilliant brain and talented paws of local visual mastermind and world-renowned graphic designer, Mike Cina. The multifaceted visual artist and typeface generator has been featured just about everywhere, shared his art direction skills to electronic music label, Ghostly International, and this year lends his creative chops to a dual exhibit for soon-to-be-opened San Francisco gallery, Artifact. So when our Cina-adoring ears got wind of a new blog launched by the artist and a few select contributors, we had to peep it. An art lover's visual panegyric, the blog is saturated with spectacular work of international and national artists, hand picked by the art-versed founders. From poster archives to vintage graphic design books, the blog celebrates design history in a refreshing, evolutionary way. Cina and the gang's esoteric, impeccable taste in graphic design make the blog a gem of a site for anyone looking to brush up on their design knowledge or anyone on the hunt for a little artistic eye candy.

FRIDAY JANUARY 21ST

Elsewhere

@ Burnet Gallery
Le Meridien Chambers
901 Hennepin Ave
Minneapolis

6 p.m. to 9 p.m. / Free

For her solo show, local artist Betsy Ruth Byers would like to take you on a trip through space, but in a very Twilight Zone way. Stopping somewhere between the edges of ethereal reality and the ambiguous pockets of time, memory and space, Byers' work blends abstract and undefined imagery with the majestically familiar and potent experiences of the body. Gaze into one of her vivid visuals and you might see sensual traces inside overlapping structures – “feet enveloped in the liquid embrace of a lake” – that Byers' describes as “encompassing movement, space, memory and time with no hierarchy.” Call us crazy, but we're guessing that Rod Serling would have loved Byers work. Fall into the nebulous void as you peep the opening reception for Elsewhere this Friday.

She has interviewed over 100 citizens whose lives were disrupted by the oil spill. This exhibition is a collection of elements featured in over 25 of Fisher's installments over the years, and promises to be a deeply moving, intimate look at one of America's forgotten tragedies. Highly recommended.

COOL LINK: FASHION FOR WRITERS

What's l'etoile lookin' at on the web this week?

As some of Minneapolis’ resident fashion writers extraordinaire (if we do say so ourselves), l’etoile is always on the lookout for others, near and far, who share our love for words and pretty clothes, not necessarily in that order. Then we found Fashion For Writers, and almost didn’t share it because it’s just that blow-everyone-else-outta-the-water good. The ladies behind this blog – Jenny and Meggy – are putting their creative writing MFAs to use writing smart, witty, poignant vignettes about the politics of fashion, their daily lives and adventures, and the clothes they find, wear, and lose while going through them. We guarantee these posts will make you think – for hours – and then hunt down someone with whom share your thoughts – for hours. You’re welcome.

Lazerbeak, has been well-versed in every diverse corner of Twin Cities music for the past decade and a half - from fronting the Fugazi-inspired pop punk of The Plastic Constellations to creating some of the hardest hitting beats for Doomtree and POS. His latest endeavor, a sprawling and textured pop album - and one of our faves of last year - has proven no less extraordinary. When the raw, battered rasp of his vocals march through the painstakingly fastidious production, he shows you just what a scene without borders is capable of coming up with. See for yourself this Saturday at the Turf, as he's joined by the future of music, Marijuana Deathsquads.

But don’t let that deter you – this band has been known to hook, inspire, and otherwise rock audiences’ faces off. SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: BROADCAST AND THE FOCUS GROUP

What's l'etoile listening to this week?

Electronic pop fans were crushed to hear the tragic news last week that the ethereal-voiced singer/songwriter of experimental indie Brit-band, Broadcast, Trish Keenan had passed away due to pneumonia complications. For the last 15 years, Keenan and fellow Broadcast members have produced some of the most beautiful, wistful, beguiling and bewitching music to come out of the indie scene, idealized by a love of ephemera, psych-rock, Phil Spector-esque pop and dreamy electronica. A beacon of lazy French pop flavor, Keenan and her detached, haunting demeanor and vocal stylings recalled the iconoclast brilliance of Nico and the retro-futurism of Stereolab. In anticipation of their full-length album – which was set to be released next year – Broadcast recently released a side project mini-album titled, Broadcast & The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age, a collaboration with long-time friend, co-founder of the Ghost Box label and renowned artwork designer, Julian House, that combined the band's esoterica aesthetic for film, library music and electronics with psych-pop colour, with House's obsession with English folklore and the eerie feel of vintage programs for schools and colleges.

Bonus: As a tragically cool, last parting gift and further proof of her impeccably music taste, give a listen this mysterious mix tape, so-called the “Mind Bending Motorway Mix” Keenan sent to a friend before she died. There's no track list on Soundcloud's page, but Transmission DJ, music buff and long-time Broadcast fan, Jake Rudh claims to have the track list to these great little audio obscurities. Hit him up on Facebook!

SUNDAY JANUARY 23RD

Dessa Club Commissions

@ The Cedar
416 Cedar Ave. S.
Minneapolis

7:30 p.m. / $5

If we’ve said it once, we’ll say it a thousand more times: the quality of music pumping through this city is beyond stellar. But where would our darling artists be without a community to back them up? That’s exactly what the 416 Commissions have been, and will continue to do through February: spotlighting artists and challenging them to compose, practice, and perform new pieces in collaboration with other local musicians. Sunday’s performance is perhaps our most darling: Doomtree’s Dessa, who will perform her project “Laws and Appetites” in collaboration with bassist Sean McPherson, pianist Kahlil Queen, and a quartet of flamenco percussionists. Short opening sets will also be performed by Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble and Mankwe. Be there, or be so out of the loop.

l'etoile Winter Editorial 2011: The Knitting Factory

Minnesota: home of five month-long winters, ground zero of Snowmageddon, originating spot of lumberjack chic. We scoff at a foot of snow and traverse ice storms with aplomb, and we do it with style. So it should be no surprise that one of our greatest exports is knitwear.

Two born-and-bred designers, Kevin Kramp and Annie Larson, have been making waves on the international circuit as of late, thanks to genre-pushing designs, strong web presences, and loads of ambition. Though the two couldn’t have more distinct aesthetics (Kramp’s avant-garde men’s knits put an emphasis on shape, while Larson’s pieces are nostalgic and graphic-heavy), we reimagined the two together, styled with knits from Philadelphia-based brand Isobel & Cleo. Covering up has never been so stylish. -Jahna Peloquin

FRIDAY ART PICK: VIVIAN MAIER

What's l'etoile looking at this week?

If you're starting to worry that perhaps your creative genius will go undiscovered in your lifetime, here's another reason to not give up hope of a posthumous celebration of your talents. An incredibly lucky duck in Chicago recently acquired over 100,000 negatives and prints by late, previously unknown photographer Vivian Maier, who is now being heralded as one of the true visionaries of the 20th century. Maier's street photography - shot between 1950-1990- captures fleeting moments that are at once deeply affecting and elegantly simple. Despite working in the most public of settings, the connection that Maier creates between the subject and the audience is incredibly intimate. Street photography has become such a trend in recent years that it's almost becoming a parody of itself. But Maier both pioneered and elevated the genre, creating something far more meaningful. Suck it, Sartorialist.

In this exhibit called “Urban View – Rural Sight”, step into the world inside a number of different, hand-picked photographs from people and places around the nation. FRIDAY JANUARY 14TH

Fort Wilson Riot / Me and My Arrow / The Town Monster / Phantom Tails

@ Turf Club
1601 University Ave W
Saint Paul

9 p.m. / $6

The Turf is back (for real this time!) and with it, of course, come some seriously killer, mostly-local lineups – specifically, Fort Wilson Riot, Me and My Arrow, The Town Monster, and Phantom Tails this Friday. From Fort Wilson Riot, expect small-town folksy, big city ambitious ballads; from local nine-piece Me and My Arrow, expect to get lost in grandiloquent, Brit-rock-esque arrangements, complex in the way only a collective of nine could accomplish. Columbus’ The Town Monster has been noted for making the “music of maniacs” – off-kilter piano, oozing syth-pop, and alt guitar throwbacks, a sound perfectly complimented by Minneapolis’ own Phantom Tails and its frenetic potpourri of synthesizers, guitar flourishes, and 60s-psychedelic rock n’ roll.

COOL LINK: KISSSSSING

What's l'etoile lookin' at on the web?

Smooch sniffles, S.A.D., and never-ending sprinkles of snow goodbye with Kissssing, an adorable little blog dedicated solely to love and romance. Think old timey photos of people being lovey dovey, peppered with sweet lyrics and quotes pretty much guaranteed to make you go “awwww.” A bit sentimental? Perhaps. Cheesy? Totally. But hey, who doesn’t love a bit of tasteful, heart-warming mushiness from time to time, especially when you’ve been hibernating (read: moping) inside all winter. That’s what we thought. Happy swooning.

The progressive bookstore boasts bicycle book delivery (though we suspect that deliveries may not be carried out on an actual boneshaker bicycle), and will soon be jam packed with readings and events. So dig out your Wellstone t-shirt, skim The New York Times, and prepare for some serious political and social discourse. Smell that, kids? That's freedom. Or maybe hemp.

SATURDAY JANUARY 15TH

Radiohead: Live in Prague

@ The Cedar
416 Cedar Ave S
Minneapolis

8 p.m. / Free (donations requested)

In a nutshell, Radiohead: Live in Prague is a fan-made live DVD. But before you go thinking shoddy editing, poor sound quality, and creepy amounts of fanaticism, you should know: Radiohead has thrown its support behind the project, so much so that the band provided audio masters to the makers of the DVD. Shot on August 23, 2009 by more than 50 concertgoers – each using a cheap hand-held Flip camera – the goal of the project was simply to capture the band perform from as many different angles as possible. The result is at once scattered, inconsistent, and absolutely electrifying.

SATURDAY JANUARY 15TH

Black Audience

@ The Red Stag
509 1st Ave NE

Grab some friends and head to Northeast Minneapolis to split cozy winter-friendly fare such as Lobster Mac & Cheese or Fried Wisconsin Cheese Curds. Though her killer performance of old-school classic numbers may compel you to sing along.

Lemmy

@ Riverview Theater
3800 42nd Avenue South
Minneapolis

11:30 p.m. / $8

Even at age 65, Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister is the living embodiment of the rock n’ roll lifestyle. “Lemmy,” the feature-length documentary that debuted at last year’s South By Southwest Festival, delves into this lifestyle over a number of years, treading the oft-blurred line between the reality and mythology of a live-fast international icon. Shot on a combination of High Definition and Super 16 mm film, “Lemmy” includes interviews with friends, family, past and present bandmates, and a slew of peers and admirers, including Slash, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, and actor Billy Bob Thornton. SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: BRITNEY, BITCH

What's l'etoile listening to this week?

Every week, there are plenty of new releases to set your hipster heart abuzz. But let's take a moment to celebrate something that truly matters, shall we? It's Britney, bitch. This week Ms. Spears debuted a new single that has already soared to number one on iTunes. "Hold It Against Me" is golden, breathy, Blackout Britney, heavy on the 808, synth, and not-too-particularly-clever wordplay. But it works. The track is infinitely danceable as the Pop Princess auto-tunes, "If I said I want your body now would you hold it against me?" We'll have to wait for more album details, but here's hoping it's packed with plenty dance-heavy hits. Perhaps "You Must Be Tired (Running Through My Head All Day)" and "Is That a Banana in Your Pocket?" And if there's too much guilt for you in this guilty pleasure, don't be ashamed to hide her new disc in your Kraftwerk CD case. We'll keep your secret.
