Weekend What's What 1/28-2/1

THE HOTNESS OF COOL

We're never disappointed in our dear Twin Cities. Even on the coldest of cold days, our hearty cohorts don't stop makin' the magic happen. In fact, we think they consider it a creative challenge when the weather is working against us! As if it's as easy and breezy as the month of May, this weekend encourages you to frolic and dance and make merry with your pals at various rock shows, parties and art openings. And why not? Spring will be here soon, so we don't see the harm in pretending! Just hold off on the short shorts, please.

FRIDAY ART PICK: MIRANDA JULY IN VICE MAGAZINE

Oh, that Miranda July. What will she do next? Well, for now, the performance artist and creative instigator has gone and done a series of photos for Vice Magazine with the help of Roe Ethridge and a talented styling team. Taking stills from classic films, July dresses herself up as an extra from flicks like Grease and The Outsiders, making you look and look again at the original stills. Somewhat Cindy Sherman-ish, but with a fresh take on anonymity. Clever n' cute!

Over the last decade, the artists have perfected the art of Polaroid photography, documenting over-looked details and extracting hidden anomalies within the familiar. Tonight, join the artists for a collaborative exhibit featuring over 250 photos and prints emanating the color, minimalism, and instant gratification of Polaroid film. Meet artists and purchase original prints! On view until March 12th.

COOL LINK: LAUNDERETTE

You know what l’étoile loves more than high fashion? High fashion that is making the world a better place. Our good friend (and former Minneapolitan) Sarah Ditty recently debuted her new blog, Launderette. Her mission? To "clean up dirty fashion.” She is constantly on the hunt for the top looks that are both aesthetically appealing and socially/environmentally sustainable via fresh, new designers, big producers, buyers, sellers, activists and creators. Not only are her picks totally hot, but they’re all benefitting the world in some way, shape or form through the materials used and/or how the piece was made. Thoughtful writing, beautiful images, and Sarah's signature wit round out a blog that we insist you bookmark asap!

SATURDAY JANUARY 30TH

Game On

@ 1419
1419 Washington Ave S
Minneapolis

7pm-2am / $3-5

Amazing! Participatory art like none other! The tinkerers at 1419 invited ten artists to fill four floors with games and game-like art. Shoot BB guns in Chris Pennington’s shooting gallery, challenge three other people to a game of ping pong, engage in a giant boffing battle, and play sonar tag. Who knows what one of our personal faves, Andy Ducett, has come up with, but we anticipate it’s going to be a blast.

SATURDAY JANUARY 30TH

Cry Baby

@ Trylon Microcinema
3258 Minnehaha Ave S
Minneapolis

7pm and 8:45pm / $8

Let us set the scene...hot, hot Johnny Depp, crazy and kooky director John Waters and a cozy indie microcinema with only 50 seats. You haven’t seen this movie since the '90s, so let’s recap: Johnny Depp is a 1950s heartthrob who can shed a single tear. He falls in love with a girl from the other side of the tracks (the right side) and no one likes it. John Waters has fun with star-crossed lovers and at bit of inappropriateness, per usual. Iggy Pop, Ricki Lake and Traci Lords show up just to make it that much better. Crybaby also screens on Friday night.

Kill to Kill + Grant Cutler & the Gorgeous Lords

@ The Entry
701 1st. Ave. N.
Minneapolis

9pm/ 18+/ $5

Warp through the music eras tonight as 4 local bands deliver rock handed down from the decades. First up, enjoy deliciously distorted '60s garage beats from IS/IS, followed by a gritty, pop-induced set from Blue Sky Blackout. Then, don't miss as Lookbook beat prolific, Grant Cutler, trades in his synthesizers for baritone vocals and minimal guitar chords resulting in the new project, Grant Cutler & the Gorgeous Lords. Featuring members of The Plastic Constellations, Askeleton, and Brutal Becomings, the material strikes a blend between the 70's tunes of ballad prince Scott Walker and the confessional lyrical narratives of folkster, Leonard Cohen -- all pieced together with a modernized feel. Finally, stay tuned as headliners, Kill to Kill, generate moody '90s style noise-rock and caterwauling on par with the Riot Grrls.

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: JOANNA NEWSOM

We'd like to believe there are two type of neo-folk lovers in the scene – those who heart Joanna Newsom right down to her freak folk, “Peach, Plum and Pear” bones and those who just can't dig her far-out style. We fall on the former side. Her unusual vocals – part pre-pubescent, part untrained Appalachian – invoke a modern psych folk feel packed inside an unsuspecting petite California-based flower child. Veering from the traditional sound of classical harpists, Newsom's harp skills are more experimental than conventional, placing her in the “freak folk” scene beside Devendra Banhart – who she's toured with – and Vetiver. True to her atypical ways, Newsom's latest project/album, Have One On Me, was first introduced to the world through a series of cryptic comics. Now exposed on music blogs like Pitchfork, her album is set to release February 23rd on Drag City. A follow-up to the critically acclaimed Ys, Have One On Me features “81” - a pastoral ballad referencing the Garden of Eden – and more experimental harp riffs than a celestial choir led by Brian Eno. Her new release is confirmed to be a triple album – with over 30 tracks! And the kids say CDs are dead.

Weekend What's What 1/21-1/26

THE NEW CLASSICS

So much to do, so little time! This weekend, as per usual, the Twin Cities throws down its awesome mix of art, music and parties much to our ongoing delight. A number of debuts pepper the landscape this time around, with art-coming-out-parties, stellar CD releases and on the flipside, a landmark anniversary bash for one of most respected local record labels. We certainly have just cause to celebrate this weekend, so prime your parkas and show your support for our local brethren!

THURSDAY JANUARY 21ST

Gallery Grooves Studios Series w/ Doug Padilla

@ Dougieland Studios
California Building
#312
2205 California Street NE
Minneapolis
(enter via door adjacent to parking lot)

7-9pm / Free

We love us some Padilla. The local legend has been makin' art and takin' names for almost as long as we've been alive -- though you'd never be able to tell due to his youthful swagger. His colorful paintings and mixed media works have been shown as far away as Paris, and he's been an integral part of our local art scene for many years. Did you know Doug Padilla was one of the original founders of Art-A-Whirl? It's true! That little seed planted by Doug and a handful of other artists so many years ago was the catalyst for what is now the booming Northeast Arts District. Pretty cool, eh? Come up to Dougie's personal studio this evening for a special edition of the Secrets of the City/Jazz88 "Gallery Grooves" event and pay homage to the man himself (and trust us, he really does tell the BEST stories). Enjoy refreshments, hot jazz tunes from Padilla's personal playlist, plus entertainment from post-beat performance artist Ted King and mechano-electronic jazz percussionist Stuart Devaan.

No doubt helped by the engineering ear of Ryan Olcott of 12 Rods fame, New Science reflects a new take on a genre that has its roots in the late ‘70s. For the uninitiated, minimal synth takes today’s electro-pop and subtract its gleam and shine for a messier, more organic effect - think early Depeche Mode. The songs, featuring a simple equation of disembodied vocals, patterned synths and sparse drum machine beats, are stripped to their most basic while retaining the elemental and melodic elements. It’s like punk rock for the electronic set. Gospel Gossip and Mercurial Rage open.

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: QUINTRON AND MISS PUSSYCAT

We’ve known for a while now that the eccentric pair from New Orleans makes great music and puppetry, but it wasn’t until battling the New Years Resolutions crowds at the Y that we realized that Quintron provides a private dance party for workin' on yer fitness, delivered straight through your headphones. Quintron plays the Hammond organ behind the grill of a car, and his own invention, the Drum Buddy while Miss Pussycat supplies the cheerleader-esque vocals and zany puppets. He describes their music as "swamp-tech and high energy." We’re not sure how to classify it, but it’s raw, wild, and great to move to.

GUEST BLOGGER: A TINY MACHINE

Beth Hammarlund gives us a detailed recap of Golden Globes fashion.

When it rains it pours...fashion!

Ah yes, the Golden Globes. The Double Gs, which interestingly enough is also Heidi Montag's new cup size. Ba dum ching! But really folks, let's get down to business. Since the Golden Globes didn't see fit to honor the actual best picture and best director of the year (ahem, The Hurt Locker), I 'm going to say fuck that noise to the awards and get to what actually matters: the fashion. Hey-o!

Join l'étoile magazine and Club Jäger for another sci-fi-tastic installation of Demietoile's esoteric dance night series, Soundstage. Virtual headgear not included.

FRIDAY ART PICK: KATIE PATERSON

Perfect winter art and listening! Paterson went to Iceland, recorded the sounds of glaciers and had them pressed into ice records made from the drippings of the glaciers on the recording. Yes, really. She’s got all sorts of brilliance and wonder on her website of the same nature, such as telescope images broadcast over New York airwaves, the sound of falling snow recorded from 100 trees and other natural wonders. Strange, supremely unique, and quite seasonally appropriate for Minnesota!

FRIDAY JANUARY 15TH

Andréa Stanislav: Lightning Struck Itself

@ Burnet Gallery
901 Hennepin Ave.
Minneapolis

7-9pm / Free

Following a reoccurring theme which links “utopia” to “dystopia,” artist Andréa Stanislav returns to the Burnet with an evolved showcase of pictorial and dark pieces in Lightning Struck Itself. Mined from visual art movements of yesteryear and elements from pop culture history, Stanislav draws inspiration from iconic artists Barnett Newman and Andy Warhol, punk bands Gang of Four and the Clash and pop culture films like 2001: A Space Odyssey. The images in her latest body of work reflect the failures of modern-day ideals and utopian impulses. After perusing the show, cap things off with delicious libations from Chamber's famous ice sculpture tavern, the Ice Chamber!

Jenny Jenkins: Signs for the New Year

@ Shoebox Gallery
2948 Chicago Avenue S.
Minneapolis
(ring buzzer *08 to be let into Smuda's studio)

8pm / Free

Head to our favorite storefront window/gallery this evening to lay eyes on new work by local artist Jenny Jenkins! The exhibit Signs for the New Year is a collection of images featuring blank signs as captured by Jenkins as she traversed America with her camera. What will happen in the new year? No one knows, but Jenkins' poignant, lonely signs may represent the clean slate so many of us wish to have; their red and yellow plastic arrows pointing to the future, waiting patiently to be filled with good news and good tidings...or perhaps even a big, bold "Your Life Sucks!" But hey, why not try to stay positive? After scoping out the art, head upstairs to Shoebox curator Sean Smuda's studio for conversation with the artist herself, plus an awesome slideshow of Smuda's recent trip to Miami Art Basel. Ring buzzer *08 to be let in to the building.

COOL LINK: BRIGHTEST YOUNG THINGS

Why do we “heart” Washington D.C. culture blog Brightest Young Things? Because they heart us, of course, but that's not the only reason! Recently flattering l'étoile by calling us “fashion and music magnates” and touting us as one of their national faves in the online arts n' culture realm, Brightest Young Things obviously knows what's up. Plus, their site is packed with great interviews and reviews, songs and videos of the day, awesome events, photo galleries, DC fashion news, and even a sassy section dedicated the gays -- all perfectly packaged inside one rad design layout. BYT also throw some of the hippest events in DC, in case you were wondering what you ought to do after your next dinner date with President Obama. Did we mention the they are our unofficial, official media partners?! And peeps say long distance internet relationships never work out.

SATURDAY JANUARY 16TH (THROUGH FEB 7TH)

Art Shanty Project 2010

@ Medicine Lake
Minnesota

10am-5pm/ free

Rest assured that l'étoile will rarely urge readers to venture outside into the Minnesota tundra unless we think it's hella worth it. Enter: the Art Shanties. One of our favorite winter exhibitions, the 4-weekend long fest is equal parts interactive sculpture park, art gallery and social experiment – it's like Burning Man on ice! The Art Shanties take place on the frozen expanses of Medicine Lake, where -- unlike Burning Man -- wearing pants is a must, unfortunately! This year, crawl inside an intimate planetarium equipped with a Galileo telescope to peep winter stars and brush up on your zodiac faqs; discover a forest fantasy in a box (Fanta Shanty); exchange treasures at the flea-market/swap-meet inspired ice house; troll around Medicine Lake in a souped up ArtCar Taxi; sweat it out in the core of a tipi sauna; dance yourself warm in the robust Dance Shanty; and be awed at a majestic three-story historic villa (Tiny Shanty). Plus, feast your eyes on visual art and performances from the architectural dancers of BodyCartography Project, improv cinema and a spectacular BIcicle race. Bundle up and get your Art Shanties on! You can always blame us if you get bitten (frost, or otherwise).

GUEST BLOGGER: A TINY MACHINE

Beth Hammarlund jumps on the model gossip bandwagon!

And in pretty people news...

Rumors abound that supermodel Catherine McNeil and model/Australian MTV VJ Ruby Rose are engaged and planning a legal marriage in Canada. Congratulations to the happy couple! Fun tidbit: Catherine McNeil won the Girlfriend model search in 2002, and Ruby rose finished second. I would imagine that matchmaking at an international model search is a pretty great way to guarantee the continued existence of almost uncomfortably good-looking couples.
