When it comes to consuming and creating in this age of information, the discrepancies between reproduction, piracy, inspiration and infringement are constantly up for debate. Adding to this debate is the media experimental documentary, RIP: A Remix Manifesto, from web activist and filmmaker, Brett Gaylor. Tonight, Sound Unseen presents a special screening of this culture-critical project that focuses on mash-up musician and sample artist, Girl Talk and explores the issues of copyright in the 20th century media landscape. From day one of the film's creation, Gaylor has shared his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, without copyright, for anyone to pull up and remix, creating a movie-as-mash-up method of filming and allowing the mixes to become an integral part of the film. Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil's Minister of Culture and pop culture critic, Cory Doctorow help answer the question "is this remix obsessed culture the epitome of power to the people or just a huddled mass following the Pied Piper of piracy?" A New York artist originally from Seoul, Korea, Soo Kim makes drawings, prints and paintings of microcosms and dreamscapes. In her colorful works, imaginary worlds intersect with characters and their back stories. She’s exhibited all around the world, and if she ever shows in the Twin Cities, she’ll already have a dedicated fan base in l'étoile!

There are certain inevitabilities one has to accept in life. You're going to hear "Let Me Clear My Throat" every time you go to a basketball game. You'll never get a good chance to raid Diane Kruger's closet. And you sure as hell won't get a Green Lantern movie starring Nathan Fillion. But fear not my little nerdy friends, for there are always those nerdier than you out there on the interwebs. And one of those nerdy people made a mock Green Lantern trailer using Nathan Fillion clips from Firefly and special effects sequences from Star Trek. It almost made me tear up.

I was lead stylist for the annual RetroRama fashion show at the Minnesota History Center on May 21, and it turned out marvelously. (I styled the vintage looks, while the designers styled their own looks.) The show was held under a tent on the grass as the sun was setting; it really couldn't have been any more magical.
