Weekend What's What 12/22-12/25

THURSDAY DECEMBER 22ND

Plastic Believers + Carlo Marx

@ Honey
205 E Hennepin Ave
Minneapolis

7 p.m. / 21+ / $4

Here at l'etoile, we love us some local music duos. From BLNX and The Night to Red Pens and Lookbook, when the power of two is harnessed, the result is typically nothing less than epic aural goodness. New local pair, the Plastic Believers, are no exception. Dubbed “New Order-meets-a-haunted Alison Moyet,” Plastic Believers features the tasty synthpop sounds of husband-wife team, Sahil and Kelly, whose dreamy, echoed vocals lead listeners on a spacey journey through the experimental. Tonight, join Plastic Believers, Carlo Marx (of UMAMI), and the Adventure Time DJs for a pre-Xmas dance bash sure to get you in the holiday spirit.

HANUKCRUSH!

@ Cause
3001 Lyndale Ave. S
Minneapolis

8 p.m. / $5 Dec 21 & 23 / Other Dates: No Cover

Is there a more appropriate way to celebrate Hanukkah than numerous kick-ass bands rocking out for EIGHT consecutive nights? Possibly, but we’re pretty sure it wouldn't be nearly as loud or even close to the level of fun promised by HANUKCRUSH! All the goyim will find plenty to like as a menorah's worth of bands takes the stage for every evening of the 'festival of lights'. Local space rock supergroup Dream Crusher anchors the performances each night along with special guests and favorites like The Rope, Sex Rays, Mayda, I Am Satellite, Speeds the Name and others for more than 30 bands in all. Nyteowl perform a CD release set tonight, while Minneapolis punkers Dying Midwestern reunite for a show this Friday. Games – presumably involving dreidels – DJ's and special bartending talent round out the entertainment. Find a night to come down and say Mazel tov, eh?

While we're noticing a theme of event titles with '!' in them for the Holidays, this exclamation point is well deserved. The party spans two venues and includes musical entertainment from The Honeydogs' Adam Levy, Kin w/ Bobby Z of The Revolution, party starter Mike the 2600 King, local hip-hop act Kids Like Us and “Rabbi” Jon Davis with his Klezmer Orchestra. Come down, mingle, eat some Chinese food in The Entry, make it a new Christmas Eve tradition.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 25TH

The 5th or 6th Annual Xmas Night Staraoke Party

@ Triple Rock
629 Cedar Ave S
Minneapolis

9 p.m. / 21+ / Free

So blackout-heavy awesome of an event that hostess with the mostest, Arzu, doesn't know how many years it's gone on, the Triple Rock's annual Christmas night bash is back with another round of “I can't believe I sang the whole thing” karaoke tuneage. Whether you're hung over from Xmas Eve or completely sober, a karaoke king or a mic wielding newbie, or merely looking to escape the fam for a while, Staraoke is the place to be. Take a stab at a Christmas classic – we know you have a little Crosby in you – an 80's hair metal ballad or a melancholy country ditty (tis the season, right?). Honestly, who cares what you sing as long as you have some devoted friends backing you, a few tight moves and a heavy consumption of drinks. Head down early to put your name in the mix and snag your moment with the mic, as the night is always packed due to it being the coolest thing to do on Christmas other than watching the grandparents fall asleep on couch after too many gingerbread cookies. You make the choice.

BONUS: All your friends will be there!
