Weekend What's What 1/6-1/8

ALL TOMORROW'S PARTIES

The new year is officially here. We've reset our party clocks and now look ahead to a fresh plate of imaginative events and creative endeavors from our lovely Twin Cities brethren. What on earth will you guys do in 2011? We've already been given some good hints, but we expect the best surprises are yet to come - and we can hardly wait. This weekend, of course, is no exception. From art to music, the odds of you wanting to hibernate at home are slim to none, so put on something crazy and join the party! Don't forget to swing by the 501 Club this weekend to bid adieu to the beloved music venue, which will close its doors for good on January 8th. So long, 501, we'll miss you with all our hearts.

THURSDAY JANUARY 6TH

Dearling Physique Album Release Show

@ 7th Street Entry
701 First Ave N
Minneapolis

8 p.m. / 18+/ $6

Domino Davis a.k.a. the elusive visage behind electro-pop quartet Dearling Physique has long been wooing and mystifying local audiences with a enigmatic blend of experimental/tribal sounds, live theatrics, architectural accoutrement and a fashion sense that can only be described as the style love child of Grace Jones and Björk. Tonight, the band emerges from being a pseudo-underground “dark” sensation to claim a spot as a permanent fixture with the release of their first full-length record, Deadeye Dealer. Don't miss as Marble House presents, with sets from Aaron & the Sea, Dada Trash Collage and DJ Loveless Aphrodite!

Bonus: Can't get enough Dearling Physique? Head Uptown Friday at 7pm to be part of the magical unveiling of DP's latest music video, “Discipline Your Hands,” at the Uptown Apple Store. The premiere pairs the band with director Ansel Wallenfang, Art Director Scott Anderson, and alluring costumes crafted by local innovators Kevin Kramp and Hilary Falk. Complimentary food and beverage will be provided!

The Hot Roxx Syd Scruggs Laser Light Show Birthday Spectacular

@ Club Jager
923 Washington Ave N
Minneapolis

10 p.m. / 21+ / Free

Stop down to Club Jager this Thursday for a royal celebration: Earl Scruggs (of this little band Pink Floyd, maybe you’ve heard of them?) and Syd Barrett were both born on January 6th, and it is our distinct honor to celebrate these gods of rock and bluegrass, respectively. Jen Hughes and Nicki Miller will be spinning what is billed as “progressive bluegrass and psychedelic country”, while ever-lovely l'etoile music editor/Jager bar wench Robyn Lewis will get you jazzy with some bubbly. Plus, let’s not forget about the LAZER SHOW.

FRIDAY ART PICK: LINN OLOFSDOTTER

What's l'étoile looking at this week?

Linn Olofsdotter’s illustrations are like the best kind of fairytale – the kind you wish you lived in, that make you take reality far less seriously. In the worlds she creates, women wear dresses of birds and gems, trees grow human arms and legs, and all things are made up of a hundred tiny other things, breathing with the most organic of movements and the boldest of hues. On top of being a fine artist, she dabbles in the world of advertising, having created T-shirt graphics for Levi’s, an outdoor advertising campaign for the X-Games in 2006, and packaging for Starbucks Liqueur – each of which is more whimsical than the next. Surreal, psychedelic, and haunting, Olofsdotter’s creations are nothing less than stuff of dreams, only they’re way less likely to fade from memory.

FRIDAY JANUARY 7TH

The Onion's 1,143rd Twin Cities Issue Celebratory Gathering

@ First Avenue
701 1ST AVE. N.
Minneapolis

6:30 p.m. / $8

Finally, after 1,143 hysterical issues and not a single celebration to show for any of them, The Twin Cities Onion crew are throwing themselves a party. The when: Friday. The where: First Avenue AND The Entry. The what (brace yourselves): A mainroom show headlined by Dosh, with Pink Mink, BNLX, Zebulon Pike, Fuck Knights, Grant Cutler and The Gorgeous Lords, DJ Jake Rudh between sets and karaoke with “The Infernal Singalong Machine” in the Entry all night long. The why: See “what,” that’s why! And don’t forget to enter the raffle for prizes from Moxie Hair Salon, Blue Plate Restaurants, The Depot, and the party-throwers themselves. FRIDAY JANUARY 7TH

Trick Horizons: New work by David Whannel

@ Rosalux
1224 Northeast 2nd St.
Minneapolis

7 p.m. / Free

If a typical landscape painting creates beauty from a few basic elements – perspective, horizon line, depth, focal points – then the landscapes of David Whannel exist on a completely different aesthetic plane. Using modern themes, abstraction, found objects, collage, surrealism, and distorted perspective, his paintings convey more than just a place, but the complexity of emotions and memories that can exist within a space. Part of Whannel’s artistic process is to work on hundreds of paintings at any given time, always waiting for that perfect moment or object that would complete them. See the fruits of this process Friday at Rosalux, where Whannel is opening his latest collection, “Trick Horizons.”

FRIDAY JANUARY 7TH

Resident Artist VII: Agents of Orange

@ Altered Esthetics
1224 Quincy St NE
Minneapolis

7 p.m. to 10 p.m. / Free

A variety of contradictory emotions might pop into association when the color “orange” is mentioned. It is the most sacred color of Hinduism and the symbolic representation of the second chakra. Twist the tables and orange brings to mind prison suits or, more recently, “code orange” – the second highest on the US Department of Homeland Security's terror threat scale. Tonight, join the artists of Altered Esthetics as they showcase their personal interpretations of the provocative hue while exploring its visual impact and emotional resonance. For a more in-depth peek into the exhibit, head back Saturday, January 15 from 1-3pm for the Artists' Discussion as the artists' deliver an insider's glimpse of their pieces.

FRIDAY JANUARY 7TH

Between The Lines: New works by Gregory J Rose and Chris Heidman

@ Rogue Buddha
357 13th Ave NE
Minneapolis

7 p.m. to 11 p.m. / Free

The friendship of musician/artists Gregory J Rose and Chris Heidman has always revolved around the things they create together. In the past, collaboration has turned up as the soundtrack to a beef jerky commercial; today, it’s a collection of paintings at the Rogue Buddha, titled “Between the Lines.” Equal parts math, neuroses, memories, and aesthetic sense, the abstract paintings of Chris Heidman (you may remember him from the 90s band Suk Patch) contain shapes that have existed since his childhood. Rose’s work – also abstract and autobiographical – gives viewers an intimate look into “living,” which Rose defines as a constant process of moving, falling, and getting back up. The collection opens Friday, with Nice Purse and DJ Danny Sigelman providing an added musical treat.

Buildings + The Central Division

@ 501 Club
501 Washington Ave S
Minneapolis

There will be plenty of time for fistshakin' and group bawls later; this week we celebrate the music. What better band to join the club's final weekend roster than local thrash rockers, Buildings, guaranteed to flood the club with wicked caterwauls, throbbing guitar riffs and serrated bass lines. Joining the band are melodic rockers, The Central Division; garage-y pop punkers, The Desert Vest; pop rockers, Safewords; and the rich, multi-layered brilliance of Al Church & State. The final show at the 501 will be held on Saturday (see our Saturday listings for details).

SATURDAY JANUARY 8TH

The MC/VL Final Show & 501 Club Final Show

@ 501 Club
501 Washington Ave S
Minneapolis

9 p.m. / 21+ / $7

All good things must come to an end. The 501 Club was a fave hot spot to many in its short life span, and thankfully they are going out swinging by hosting a grand finale so epic it'll take days to recover. Expect an outrageously wild party celebrating the bittersweet curtain call to two beloved fixtures in the local music community with this highly anticipated lineup: the punk and throwback rock sounds of Kitten Forever and Pink Mink, combined with a massive dance party inducing the beats of Slapping Purses, and MC/VL's very last performance and album release party. If you've never witnessed the wildly energetic MC/VL rap on top of the bar, rip their shirts off in an all-out frenzy, and breakdance till they bleed, now's your chance. We can't think of any place we'd rather be than watching this all go down. Hangovers guaranteed.

SATURDAY JANUARY 8TH

WaxxMaxx, Giravves, Kill-Me Kare Bare, Baby Boys

@ Hexagon Bar
2600 27th Ave S
Minneapolis

9 p.m. / Free

Arguably one of 2010’s best new bands to watch, WaxxMaxx (Mark Mallman’s latest electronic pop project, with sultry singer Nicole Godiva and drummer Alyssa Brenny) is playing the Hexagon Bar on Saturday, and you'll def want to be there – especially considering the three other awesome bands with whom they’ll be sharing the stage. One is the Weezer-esque local supergroup Giravves, whose members have played in ELnO, Crossing Guards, Mark Mallman, and half a dozen other bands; Kill-Me Kare Bare, who play power pop a lot less scary than their name would imply; and Baby Boys, whose fuzzy, intense stylings are among those we consider serious contender material for 2011. As you usually would at das Hex, arrive ready to rock out.
