Weekend What's What 1/30-2/3

PARTY MARDI

While our current climate may not inspire you to rip off your shirt in exchange for some cheap plastic beads, we encourage you to embrace the spirit of Mardi Gras, Minnesota style! With such costume-worthy events as Techno Karneval and even our own Lifestyle Editor's Birthday soiree, we think you'll easily find an excuse to rock an exciting new persona. We do, however, hope you'll keep your shirt on.

FRIDAY ART PICK: KEITH ERIC WILLIAMS

Recent Minneapolis transplant Keith Eric Williams is a happy discovery for us. His lucious illustrations are brightly warm but have a graphic-novel feel that helps lend a dark edge. His detailed and hand-inked images range from the fascinatingly creepy to the marvelously sexy - so we can't help but predict you'll be seeing a lot more from this artist is 2008.

Keith Eric Williams helped fill in the blanks for l'étoile this week with a quick q&a:

You are relatively new to Minneapolis - what do you think about the creative scene here?

The arts, fashion and music scenes in Minneapolis are great. I'm a Hip-Hop head, and I love going to local shows. I'd love to delve into the fashion and arts scene more I just need to find the time.

What prompted you to move to Minnesota?

I heard a lot of good thing about the city and its creative community, so I decided to pack my bags. I also just needed a change of scenery.

Describe your artistic style - what mediums do you use and what are your inspirations?

I would describe my style as traditional meets digital meets surreal. Most of my pieces start off as a black and white inking and from there its all digital experimentation. I'm a traditionally trained artist so I'm always conscious of anatomy, color and design. I'm inspired by most things creative, everything from typography to motion graphics to painting.

Do you have any plans to exhibit your work in the near future?

Yes, I love my digital work but I want to get back to my roots and paint more, maybe do a little printmaking. I've finally gotten settled into my new home and my style. I think this year is gonna be a big year for me so hopefully you'll see me in a gallery soon.

Favorite hangouts in Minneapolis?

I've been b-boying (breakdancing) for six years now so I love clubbing. Foundation and First Avenue are always nice. You'll also see me at local and touring hip-hop shows. I'm also a permanent fixture at the Tea Garden in Uptown - I love that place. Shout out to everyone there.
