Nothing says summer better than saucy swimwear! That’s why for their fifth year Vita.mn is bringing back the annual Poolside Fashion Show to the Calhoun Beach Club runway. This Thursday, local Ignite Models will be getting in the summer spirit and dressing up in 40 of the season’s best looks for a fancy night out, a casual day in and, of course, swimming – all styled by none only than our very own fashion editor, the fabulous Jahna Peloquin. Vita.mn’s Alexis McKinnis and MOA trend analyzer Sara Rogers will be MCing the event (with the help of beats from DJ Jake Rudh) as looks from Betsey Johnson, Emma Berg, Primp, Len Druskin, Stephanie Lake and more waltz down the Calhoun catwalk.

FRIDAY ART PICK: AELITA ANDRE
What's l'etoile looking at this week?
In the world of abstract art, “My kid could have done that” is a longstanding joke. But with the paintings of Aelita Andre on display at NYC's Agora Gallery this month – and selling for about $27,000 – it seems (as usual) that the art world gets the last laugh. Aelita is four years old. That’s so young, may we remind you, that she giggled through a recent interview with ABC news, ignoring the reporter’s questions. The daughter of two Australia-based artists, her Pollock-esque paintings are, to use more classic parenting lingo, really somethin’ else. With titles such as “Dinosaur Islands,” “Unicorns and Dragonfly,” and “Yellow Thinking Man,” the tot’s paintings possess the exact whimsy, innocence, and youthful spirit that some artists strive to recapture their entire careers. Maybe time is needed to tell whether or not she’s a true prodigy, but then again, none of our childhood finger paintings looked like that.

Unraveled DIY Festival

You’ve seen it brightening up gardens and sprucing up kitchens, dangling from ears and organizing messes, revolutionizing hairstyles and outfits alike. You might even say it’s the spice of life, if only for its penchant for making awesome out of the tragically unhip. It’s DIY, ducklings, and if its many successes (and hilarious failures) don’t deserve a festival, then we don’t know what does. By design, Rapson Hall has us covered Friday at the Unraveled DIY Festival, Minnesota’s first ever exposition of everything Etsy-esque. In addition to more than 50 artist and crafter booths, the event will feature a yarn bombing demo, an interactive crochet area, lace and spinning demos, a wearable art slam, henna by Sara Cura, live music, a fashion show by Homic, and a showing of MCAD student work. And as you’ll need soccer mom levels of energy to survive all that, Peace Coffee will be slingin’ free cuppas. Do indulge yourself.
BONUS: Since the festival is associated with the Surface Design Association Conference, which is in town this weekend, a number of other special events coincide, including an SDA member trunk show at the Radisson Hotel (complete with over 30 local, national, and international textile artists), within-spitting-distance from Rapson Hall. In addition to performances by local pop-funk goddess Mayda and psychedelic electro-rockers Retrospecs (rumor has it they’ll be covering “Bad Girl”), the go-go gals of Bass Kandi, the Playatta video crew, and the Freaky Deeky TV squad will be on hand to ensure a riotously risqué radventure for all. Tonight, get ready for Midwest punk rock at its best as the Paul Dickinson-fronted band, Frances Gumm, lend their indie post-punk chops to West Bank bar, Palmers. A band that’s been rocking on and off since the '90s, Frances Gumm has shared the stage with Pavement and Sebadoh and have released a stream of albums brimming with jittery, gilded energy and teenage nostalgia. Prepare for a live set of agro rock, mutilated guitar endings and live surprises from this “cabal of noise freaks.” With special guests Upstate featuring Danny Viper. We'll be there waving lighters and shout requesting “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Hey, it’s worth a shot, right?

What better way to celebrate the long-awaiting arrival of summer than with sweatalicious tunes from the Purple One, at the very place that is so epically associated with the artist? Side note: Dudley D has toured as the DJ for Prince and the New Power Generation, so if you want to get schooled in the new and old and raddest remixes (cuz you know you can’t download this jazz), you best be there.

Ok, you got us; we’re total suckers for a good wishlish. And while you may be silently thinking, “listen l’etoile, I have warm weather, beach bum manifestos and a truck load of outdoor concerts to look forward to; what more do I need?,” we’re a little more greedy than you. We want it all. That’s why we just had to share Bust Mag’s hilar summer wishlist set. The clever writers over at Bust have come up with a series of extraneous seasonal “must-haves,” dubbed “Gimme Dat,” which include superfluous gadgets and goods like a bedazzled motorcycle (eat that Hell’s Angels!), ridic Sky Mall products (inflatable cabanas for your Hidden Beach excursions, anyone?) and our fave, Booze-Infused Whipped Cream for the gormandizing lush in all of us. You probably know John Waters best for his outlandishly brilliant trash/cult films, but you may be surprised to find out that Mr. Eccentric boasts an extensive art collection, not to mention creates his own photo and installation work. Opening Saturday, guest curator Waters shows off his flair for art eclecticism as the Walker presents Absentee Landlord, a museum social experiment, if you will. Waters has embellished and reconfigured the WAC's permanent collection with dueling genres of art, exploring the relationships, tensions and missing links between pieces in the works. True to his “pop culture provocateur” form and delicious knack for subversion, expect a genius slant on the concept of contemporary art exhibition with work from the Walker's collection punctuated pieces from Gregory Green, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Karlheinz Weinberger, and of course, the creep-stashed sage himself.

Playing off the natural-world notion of two streams merging into a mighty current, this year’s Surface Design Association Conference focuses on the mingling of ideas to produce greater meaning and experience. At the heart of this year’s international textile art conference is “Bodies of Water,” a fashion show of similar theme. Textiles, colors, and visions will converge on the runway – the creations of more than 40 surface design artists from around the world, including textile artist and designer Carter Smith. Lauded for his one-of-a-kind shibori fabrics – a technique involving pleating and tying fabric and then dying in layers – Smith has been perfecting his process over the past four decades. Tickets are limited, so make sure you snag yours before the opportunity drifts away.

Artists, designers, and print-makers from as near as our Mini Apple and Chicago and as far as Indonesia and Croatia have been folding, snipping, creasing, bending, and otherwise knicknacking a myriad of paper wonders for your musing (and let’s be honest, purchasing) pleasure. Expect sculptures, toys, and wall pieces in a number of shapes, colors, and plies – including pieces from local design stalwarts Aesthetic Apparatus and Squad 19 founder Steve Tenebrini – as well as special eats and tunes on opening night.

The Moon Glyph Showcase this Saturday, featuring bands Food Pyramid, Buffalo Moon, Velvet Davenport, Larry Wish & His Guys, and Camden, highlights some of Minneapolis’ finest offerings in the genre of synthed-out haze. Food Pyramid’s computer-driven ambient music is a throwback to '60s and '70s trippy cosmic electronica; bossa nova experts Buffalo Moon will bring you some taut electropop, while Velvet Davenport is straight fuzzy, dream rock that will give you the high of a drug coma without all the side effects. And Larry Wish & His Guys and Camden will each provide a sound that will be effectively like unleashing rainbows and unicorns into your eardrums. How can you say no to that?
SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: HALF JAPANESE
What's l'etoile listening to this week?
Call it our love for distorted guitar or an obsession with bands with misguided egos, but for some reason every summer we have the most intense hankering to listen to Half Japanese. The mid-70’s Michigan duo – formed by real life brothers Jad and David Fair – practically defined lo-fi post-punk, with aberrant-y, yet disturbingly catching experimental tracks about unrequited love, sci-fi flicks and monsters all sung in their signature off-key, cheese-ball-style. It’s rumored Kurt Cobain was wearing a Half Japanese t-shirt the day he died, so it’s no surprise the band turned into the cult classics, wave-pavers for DIY musicians they are today. We also suggest checking out the '90s documentary Half Japanese: The Band That Would Be King – a tribute to the punk rockers some dub the world’s greatest outsider band.

Being the close-knit arts cities that we are, it's no wonder that musicians from all bouroughs have come together to raise money to help storm-ravaged North Minneapolis in its time of need. A ridiculously amazing lineup is in store, including sets from Sounds of Blackness, Soul Asylum, Brother Ali, Robert Robinson, Paris Bennett, The New Standards, Toki Wright, and 20+ more (yes, 20+ more). Emceed by hostess with the mostest, Robyne Robinson, and featuring cameos by Angela Davis, T. Michael Rambo, and numerous radio personalities, tonight's benefit is a heartfelt tribute to the North Minneapolis neighborhood, and an imperative helping hand for those affected by the recent tornado.

Local poet and "Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics" grad Ruth Kohtz, as well as original feisty Riot Act ink-slingers Paul Dickinson and Laura Brandenburg will also be rattling off some their own “science-ficterific” prose. Be there. After all, what Sunday night wouldn’t benefit from a little riot?
