Secret Location
West Bank

9pm / 18+ / $5

If you don't know where this secret location is...um, well, we can't really tell you so you best just ask around! There will, however, be some mad dancing happening there tonight as tunes from beatmasters Soviet Panda, Elite Gymnastics, Solid Gold (DJ set), and Brooklyn's buzzed-about, girl-fronted electro outfit, MNDR, rock the secret West Bank spot (see our Sunday Music Pick for the week for more info on MNDR!). Tim Krause adds to the ambiance with some wild visuals, rounding out what we can only assume will be a night of delightful debauchery.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 25TH (THROUGH 28TH)

Rent! (Final Weekend)

@ The Lab Theater
700 North 1st Street
Minneapolis

7:30pm / $46.50 general admission

If you've yet to see Rent, we suggest you step to it, as this weekend marks the close of the popular production. Director and choreographer (and Minnesota native) Andrew Rasmussen has taken on the challenge of adapting the popular Broadway hit in his own evocative version of the tell-tale production of love, music and the fight against AIDS. The musical follows the fast-paced lives of a cast of 15 as they struggle through a twisty-turny world of death, love and poverty. This musical leaves no lull in the action with epic scenes that, at times, cause the audience to chuckle as well as tear up. The awe-inspiring and chill-inducing vocals induce cheering after almost every solo and rightly so -- with a cast that includes local Latin songstress Maria Isa and American Idol's Paris Bennett, the talent involved is no joke. Plus, the in-your-face staging of rugged rafters and urban street scenery brings the audience completely in to the action. Hurry in before your time runs out—the last dates have been extended through February 28th.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 25TH (THROUGH SUNDAY)

Minneapolis New Breed

@ Southern Theater
1420 Washington Ave.
Minneapolis

7:30pm/ $18

It's a classic “birds 'n bees” story. Three local performers got together and out of their shared love of experimental performance and bred a love child that defies definitions, challenges the norm and pushes the envelope for innovation. The proud parents: MPLS' troupes Lamb Lays with Lion, Mad King Thomas and SuperGroup. The love child: three new works that together form a hybrid of dance, performance and theater. Among the topics in Minneapolis New Breed show are a comedic dance investigating the sexy underbelly of cultural dogmas; a re-staging of Brit auteur-director, Katie Mitchell's The Seagull; and a contemporary musical channeling the four elements.

FRIDAY ART PICK: CAMILLE ROSE GARCIA + ALICE IN WONDERLAND

We really thought we couldn't love pop surrealist LA-based artist, Camille Rose Garcia, any harder – if you may remember we raved about the Gothy artist in a What's What edition way back in November of '08 – but now that she's “fallen down the rabbit hole,” we've become slightly stalkerish of the macabre sister. Combining her style – one heavy into utopian/capitalist themes and wasteland fairy tales – with an uncanny love for all things Disney, it was only a matter of time before the two collided. Of course we're talking about Garcia's latest project re-illustrating Lewis Carroll's classic novella, Alice in Wonderland! Using vintage papers with ripped up backgrounds, watercolor, acrylic, pen & ink and collage mediums and drawing inspiration from Victorian illustrators and the original John Tenniel drawings, Garcia fills the pages with sinister caricatures, psychedelic colorings and creepy renderings of iconic characters. Garcia owes much of her edgy patchwork to the playlist she rocked while working, full of tracks by Wolf Parade, Arcade Fire, the Dead Weather and Them Crooked Vultures. Her already face-melting phantasms couldn't be more perfect for Carroll's substratal drug references and she makes sure to pour on innuendos with giant mushrooms and “drink me” bottles in almost every picture. Grab your collector's copy on Amazon.com along with other macabre storybooks by Garcia.

@ They Won't Find Us Here Gallery
3500 Bryant Avenue S. (Alleyside)
Minneapolis

7-10pm / Free

If you're looking for a bright, spacious gallery space that serves wine in stem wear, They Won't Find Us Here Gallery probably won't impress you. They will, however, inspire with their D.I.Y. method of art appreciation and their grassroots gumption. This little gallery located on the second story of an old garage with a leaky roof and no heat epitomizes the spirit of the independent artist -- and that's something we can't ever get enough of! Tonight venture out to this new-ish spot to lay eyes on work by Josh Hosterman and Andrew Vomhof. Of course, in true artist form, there is virtually no information to be found on this show or the art being displayed...but hey, we like surprises.

Run between the Entry and the Mainroom to hear Cloud Cult, Roma di Luna, Jeremy Messersmith, Trailer Trash, Unknown Prophets, Total Babe, Peter Wolf Crier and Caroline Smith & the Goodnight Sleeps and more. FRIDAY FEBRUARY 26TH

Chip Schilling Opening Reception

@ Open Book
1011 Washington Ave. S.
Minneapolis

5:30-7pm/ free

Local book artist, Chip Schilling, works inside a humble studio mashed up between past and present with equal parts industrial revolution and digital age. His press, Indulgence Press -- a name that nods to high-end art and early religious pamphlets -- is a one-man show, pumping out artist books, prints and broadsides. Tonight, join the Minnesota Book Awards and the Minnesota Center for Book Arts for an opening reception of the exhibit which has been showcasing samples of Schilling's work since late January. The reception is extra exciting because it doubles as a celebration for Schilling's 2010 MN Book Artist of the Year win. And considering his already notable status as one of the best book artists in the nation – having collections at the British Library and the Whitney, just to name a few – this comes as no surprise to us,but is fantastic news nonetheless! Sip on wine and snack on hors d'oeuvres and enjoy live music by Sally's Flag as you peek Schilling's artisan-skilled work.

BONUS: Check out this great article about Schilling by our pal Gregory J. Scott.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 27TH

Metro's Fashion Fight Night 4

@ Uppercut Boxing Gym
1324 Quincy St. NE
Minneapolis

7:30 doors, 8pm show/ $50

Ok, so maybe you won't catch us DVRing the lastest Ultimate Fighting Championship or hanging up shirtless posters of Oscar De La Hoya on our bedroom walls – at least not that we'd admit – but it doesn't mean us fashionistas can't get behind a good fight. Hyped as the one of the most anticipated fashion events of the season and a Vegas/ANTM/Haute Couture mixture, Fashion Fight Night 4 has boasted a sold-out crowd for the past three years and strangely no one's ever even lost an ear. Metro Mag hosts this metaphor-ridden competition where six teams of photographers and models go head-to-head in a stylish fashion photography deathmatch/shootout. And to add that extra element of fight realism, the event is held in an actual boxing gym! Plus, $5 of every ticket purchased goes towards the fantastic non-profit, LEAD Project. Dress to impress. Mouthguards not included. As of this post, there are still a few tickets available, but we'd hurry up if we were you!

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 27TH

Kruddler/ Al Grande/ The Mammy Nuns/ Mike Suade

@ The Palace
33 W. 7th Pl.
St. Paul

8pm-1am / 18+ / Free

St. Paul's newest live music venue, The Palace, premieres with a few old-schoolers in its corner. Tonight's show heralds the triumphant return of St. Paul rock 'n' roll hounds, Kruddler. Named after a horse in an episode of “The Simpsons,” the trio emerged onto the Twin Cities' alt scene in the '90s with their debut EP, Think About It Buddy, packed with boisterously catchy jams and crunchy guitar riffs. Despite an ever shuffling lineup, the band remained a favorite among the TC crowd – rockin' such clubs as the Turf, the Red Sea and the now defunct Uptown – until their split in the mid-00s. Fans heading to the Downtown club tonight should expect nothing less than a heavy-handed rock set full of rip roaring energy. With live sets by fellow old-schooler, Al Grande and post-punk from Wisconsin's Mammy Nuns. MPLS graphic designer/musician Mike Suade emcees and Suade and DJ Lord Frenchy spin vinyl between sets.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 27TH

Moonstone LP Release Show

@ Turf Club
1601 University Ave.
St. Paul

9pm / 21+ / $6

Rock n' roll propheteers, Moonstone, might be better known around the Twin Cities for their mid-set sermons by bandmate Reverend Micah Mackert than for what they actually sound like. Which is pretty unfortunate because while we still aren't quite sure what exotic beliefs Lunarians hold (phrases like “analytical Factualism" and “individual rebrilliantation” hurt our heads) there's one thing we do know: they rock! Embodying all the elements of hot vintage Krautrock, prog, classic 70's rock, the psychedelic prophet four-piece is a synthy taste of spiritualism you don't need to be one of their apostles to appreciate. Tonight, the band celebrates the release of their debut album, NR:4;3.1-3, (packed with a large format 23-page booklet written by the Reverend) with live sets from Thunderbolt Pagoda, Tender Meat and Children of Euler. And if you're curious about things Lunarian style, check out the Moonstone's blog, Moonstone Ministries, below. Truth be told, we're still not sure if it's all a big PR ploy.

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: MNDR

In this gloomy weather, we at l’étoile are always on the hunt for a way to warm up our winter blues and get our blood pumping. Lucky for us, that is exactly what the beats of leading lady MNDR does! MNDR (or, as it is supposed to be said “MAN-DAR”) is a one woman-electro-wonder hailing all the way from “Brooklyn through Los Angeles via San Francisco”. With her shaggy blonde hair and thick white frames, MNDR brings a perfect mix of nerdy yet Madonna-esque, electronica music to the table. And believe us, her rad synth-music making is the perfect fit for a bumpin’ house party or even on the stage of First Ave. Lucky for us, this lovely lady is making a stop in Mpls this Thursday, with local wax-flipper Soviet Panda, a DJ-set by Solid Gold and Elite Gymnastics at the Medu$a (see our Thursday listing).

That is the key to Gastro Non Grata’s quarterly gig at the Triple Rock, and this time around they are all about “making a bid deal out of small plates.” With the help of Doug Flicker from Piccolo Restaurant, samples of his scrumptious smoked sturgeon dish will be shared as well as a taste of the best pork meatballs in town. On top of that, the Left Hand Brewing Company is bringing some of their tasty beers to share. All of this food and drink is even better mashed with the rockabilly riffs of Bitch and Brown as well as sounds from the likes of Bella Koshka, Unknown Prophets and Noise Noise Noise. Sounds like music to our ears AND to our taste buds!

Some might call it an eclectic music utopia; we like to refer to it by its more informal moniker, Nightmoves. COOL LINK: LAUNDERETTE

You know what l’étoile loves more than high fashion? High fashion that is making the world a better place. Our good friend (and former Minneapolitan) Sarah Ditty recently debuted her new blog, Launderette. Her mission? To "clean up dirty fashion.” She is constantly on the hunt for the top looks that are both aesthetically appealing and socially/environmentally sustainable via fresh, new designers, big producers, buyers, sellers, activists and creators. Not only are her picks totally hot, but they’re all benefitting the world in some way, shape or form through the materials used and/or how the piece was made. Thoughtful writing, beautiful images, and Sarah's signature wit round out a blog that we insist you bookmark asap!

SATURDAY JANUARY 30TH

Game On

@ 1419
1419 Washington Ave S
Minneapolis

7pm-2am / $3-5

Amazing! Participatory art like none other! The tinkerers at 1419 invited ten artists to fill four floors with games and game-like art. Shoot BB guns in Chris Pennington’s shooting gallery, challenge three other people to a game of ping pong, engage in a giant boffing battle, and play sonar tag. Who knows what one of our personal faves, Andy Ducett, has come up with, but we anticipate it’s going to be a blast.

SATURDAY JANUARY 30TH

Cry Baby

@ Trylon Microcinema
3258 Minnehaha Ave S
Minneapolis

7pm and 8:45pm / $8

Let us set the scene...hot, hot Johnny Depp, crazy and kooky director John Waters and a cozy indie microcinema with only 50 seats. You haven’t seen this movie since the '90s, so let’s recap: Johnny Depp is a 1950s heartthrob who can shed a single tear. He falls in love with a girl from the other side of the tracks (the right side) and no one likes it. John Waters has fun with star-crossed lovers and at bit of inappropriateness, per usual. Iggy Pop, Ricki Lake and Traci Lords show up just to make it that much better. Crybaby also screens on Friday night.

Minneapolis

First up, enjoy deliciously distorted '60s garage beats from IS/IS, followed by a gritty, pop-induced set from Blue Sky Blackout. Then, don't miss as Lookbook beat prolific, Grant Cutler, trades in his synthesizers for baritone vocals and minimal guitar chords resulting in the new project, Grant Cutler & the Gorgeous Lords. Featuring members of The Plastic Constellations, Askeleton, and Brutal Becomings, the material strikes a blend between the 70's tunes of ballad prince Scott Walker and the confessional lyrical narratives of folkster, Leonard Cohen -- all pieced together with a modernized feel. Finally, stay tuned as headliners, Kill to Kill, generate moody '90s style noise-rock and caterwauling on par with the Riot Grrls.

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: JOANNA NEWSOM

We'd like to believe there are two type of neo-folk lovers in the scene – those who heart Joanna Newsom right down to her freak folk, “Peach, Plum and Pear” bones and those who just can't dig her far-out style. We fall on the former side. Her unusual vocals – part pre-pubescent, part untrained Appalachian – invoke a modern psych folk feel packed inside an unsuspecting petite California-based flower child. Veering from the traditional sound of classical harpists, Newsom's harp skills are more experimental than conventional, placing her in the “freak folk” scene beside Devendra Banhart – who she's toured with – and Vetiver. True to her atypical ways, Newsom's latest project/album, Have One On Me, was first introduced to the world through a series of cryptic comics. Now exposed on music blogs like Pitchfork, her album is set to release February 23rd on Drag City. A follow-up to the critically acclaimed Ys, Have One On Me features “81” - a pastoral ballad referencing the Garden of Eden – and more experimental harp riffs than a celestial choir led by Brian Eno. Her new release is confirmed to be a triple album – with over 30 tracks! And the kids say CDs are dead.

All Tomorrow's Parties

As the holiday season approaches and a new year lies just around the corner, one may be left to wonder what the future holds for the Twin Cities' event scene. From Christmas parties and winter-themed fashion shows to New Year's Eve bashes, it seems everyone's way of beating Seasonal Affective Disorder is by jaunting off to some warm affair, cocktails and mukluks in tow. But what gives an event that certain je ne sais quoi? How does one plan a singular fete that makes guests not only want to attend but left wowed at the finale? Is it the décor, the guest list, a great PR, is it fate? Or is it something more groomed? Is there an art to event planning?

From grassroots shindigs to highbrow hobnobbing, I talked with a few of the Twin Cities' finest event planners to get an insider's perspective, advice and banter on “the art of event planning.”

First Things First...

First off, when planning an event, define goals and brainstorm themes so that everyone involved is on the same page. Cohesiveness will shine through in your audience's perspective.

“There are 2 first steps – defining the client's goals, ideas and theme and then viewing the venue/location to get inspiration from there. Integrating the venue is key when drafting good design.” - Laura Mullen, president & Lead Event Designer of Laura Mullen Event Design.

“We typically brainstorm with a number of staff members to come up with what we want the overall look and feel of the event to be. In addition to our event department, we like to get input from sales, edit and our associate publishers to make sure each event falls within the METRO mission. Once venues are nailed down, we determine what we will need to get to enhance the look of the venue – lighting, audio visual and décor.” - Amanda Peterson, events and promotions manager of Tiger Oak Publications, Metro Magazine.

“The beginning stages of planning are usually spent putting together a team of people with whom you'd like to collaborate with, piecing it together so that the people you're pulling into the planning process are bringing with them their own strengths/ networks that may be in an area that's not necessarily your forte.” - Matt Perkins, Perkins Production, marketing coordinator at MPR, former booking manager/ promotions for Nomad World Pub.

Wallflowers Not Included...

Keeping guests comfortable, engaged and stimulated is über important. After all, your guests are the ones who will be blogging, tweeting and Facebooking about your event both pre and post. Their opinion is paramount. The best way to get those shy, wallflowers away from dark corners is by making the light irresistible. Some of the most delightful events seem to almost cater to the ADD crowd. Photobooths, dancing, craft activities, even just a cash bar are lively ways to keep people moving and socializing.

“I love creating little vignettes guests come across as they make their way through the party...Once the event is pretty thoroughly thought out, I do this exercise where I visualize every step a guest will be making that day, from the parking lot to the end of the evening, to make sure we're keeping them both entertained, informed and at ease.” - Laura Mullen.

“I really appreciate and admire events that make me feel like I'm experiencing something new. Whether it be taking over an off the beaten path warehouse and recording studio, showcasing up and coming artists, or collaborating with a bunch of artistic mediums and presenting them all together in one space...all of these elements I hope lend themselves to creating something fresh and new that you can't experience on a daily basis around town.” - Matt Perkins.

“I was trained as an architect so I've spent a lot of time thinking about where people come together. What I'm more interested in lately is why people come together...When you give people good reasons to leave the house, you're giving them an opportunity to build community. Often times this involves dancing and drinking, but it can also involve making something (art, food, etc.), or sharing something (a skill, a passion, an idea).” - Colin Kloecker, co-founder Solutions Twin Cities, promoter West Bank Social Center.

To Swag or Not to Swag...

You know the saying, “to give is better that to receive.” This especially applies when it comes to throwing an event. Gift bags, party favors, souvenirs, swag – all of these perks, if done right, can be more than just party fads, but smart marketing tools that will leave your party (and company) fresh in the minds of all who attended. Just don't be stingy!

“I see a lot of groups skimping on the party elements to save cost or raise more for their group and it ends up seeming low-budget or feeling boring – that's a real fast way to not have guests or sponsors in a few years. I typically dislike giveaways unless they are really creative and bring home the theme. Otherwise we just see a lot of waste at the end of the night. I was the first eco-friendly event designer in Minnesota and I tend to do everything I can to avoid useless waste at my events.” - Laura Mullen.

“I'm not huge in the gift bag trend and don't see much benefit in them unless they contain a couple high-end items that are of some value. Little swag items and knick knacks often get left behind and are hardly memorable. Photobooths are classic and are an easy souvenir to take away from the event.” - Matt Perkins.

Au Fait Ambiance...

Party décor is a drug best used in moderation. Go overboard and you'll find yourself on a one-way course down tacky lane. Skimp and you just may have a blasé look and a group of disenchanted guests on your hands. Remember to keep it simple, use your space wisely, and always add creativity and a little flair of imagination.

“Décor not based on the surrounding – like an overly modern purple design in a subtle, natural-looking venue – seems like a waste or that the planners didn't research long enough to find the perfect fit. The venue elements should be an integrated part of the décor – it's cheaper that way too!” - Laura Mullen.

When it comes to atmosphere, silence isn't golden; it's a total party faux pas. Thankfully, due to the invention of that marvelous personal tunes device – the iPod – creating mood music is as easy as hooking up your pod to a speaker system and pushing play. Compiling a cute shuffle mix the night before is a great way to keep lo-fi beats flowing coherently all night and set ambiance.

“I think sound is key to a party – even just background music piped in. I hate walking into an event and trying to interact with new people and there is dead silence in-between conversations – uncomfortable! Music is so easy with the iPod and even a cheap A/V system to rent, so all parties should have some sound going the whole time!” - Laura Mullen.

For high-end events like runway shows and restaurant openings, hiring a DJ is your best bet. Whatever angle you choose, just get some music going!

Shamelessly Plug...

When it comes to events, promoting is key. Feel free to post and re-post at will and encourage your social savvy friends to do the same. If you're offering incentives or discounts make sure peeps are aware. We're still in a recession and everyone loves a good party perk.

“Incentives and other add on value items become a huge influence on how people perceive your event and what they get in return. A $20 cover is definitely more appealing if you know that all of the drinks at the event are free or hugely discounted. It becomes a game in how you price your event and all the perks you get when you attend, especially in the down economy where people don't want to pay for anything.” - Matt Perkins.

As l'étoile editor and chief, Kate Iverson, can tell you, there's nothing more frustrating then trying to write about an event with only a poorly laid out, scanty press release or Facebook invite to go off. To create an event that's buzz-worthy you must first make it buzz-capable. Make sure invites and releases go out at least two weeks in advance – not day of for god's sake! - and fill them with general info, a snappy description and an image creditable enough to be re-posted. Yes, aesthetics – even in event invites – are something people notice. A witty, eye-catching invite can be just the ticket to sway a party-goer otherwise on the fence.

Event planners, party throwers and social savants, if you follow these guidelines we guarantee your party with be the talk of the town for all the right reasons and the future of TC events will continue to be fresh, innovative and filled with pleasant surprises. Happy holidays and make sure to party like it's 2010!
