Crazy dance party alert! This Friday night the cool cats at Burlesque of North America team up with two on-fire female DJs from the NYC: Star Eyes (Trouble & Bass) and Jubilee(Nightshifters/Flashing Lights). This weekend's "secret location" extravaganza is billed as a "spaced-out bass odyssey" and brings to mind the good old rave-days with a stylized, girl-fueled twist. We've been harboring a hard lady-crush on Ms. Star Eyes, whose appearance last year at Burlesque's "Do It To It" blow out at First Avenue got us all in a twitter with her combo of swarthy good looks and epic noise-bringing abilities. And Jubilee, though new to our ears, has easily added herself to our list of cool girls on which to obsess. Friday's bash also includes the ghetto tech stylings of Bitch Ass Darius and the funky breakdowns of Mike 2600. The girls are currently on a mini-tour, enroute to Minneapolis, but they took a few minutes to answer a few of our pressing questions via e-mail:
Star Eyes, Last time you were in Minneapolis you made quite the impact. What have you been up to since we last danced to your jams?
Woo, so much. I released my "Disappear" EP on Trouble & Bass in June with a ton of remixes and a video. In the same month, I quit my day job at XLR8R. I've toured Europe and the US with T&B crew and by myself, drank a lot of whiskey, and worn a lot of silly costumes. Currently, I'm writing spooky songs, learning how to make Count Chocula synth sounds, and freaking out at Bad Manor with Jubilee and Dre Skull and all our assorted vibe props.
Jubilee, what are some of your major projects as of late?
After this tour I am going to work on sleeping... and maybe eating a salad or 2 instead of a burger or BBQ pulled pork sandwich. That will be my first project. Then I am going to finish a record I recently started with another DJ/Producer that I've always wanted to work with. More on that closer to when it is finished. I am also working on getting a pod cast up very soon. Hopefully by the New Year.
What's your connection and how do you compliment each other?
We have a high-speed internet connection. I mean, we're some of the only girl DJs in our "scene" so we like to get together and talk about, like, "our cycles" and past lives and stuff like that. We mostly compliment each other on our hair or our shoes or doing dope mixes. We also both like animal hats and animated gifs so, I mean, we get along pretty well.
Star Eyes, You previously held the position of Editor at XLR8R Magazine, are you still working in journalism or are you focused on your career as a DJ at the moment?
I'm focused on DJing and making music right now. As previously mentioned, I left XLR8R in June and I really haven't done any writing since then, although I expect I'll do some more in the future, possibly fiction this time around, since I have a lot of crazy stories that I need to commit to paper while I still remember them.
Jubilee, what other things do you have your fingers into?
I have pretty much focused my entire life on music. It's kind of scary, I am not gonna lie. But it's exciting too. It's the only thing in my life that I have ever given 100% to. That's how I know I am doing the right thing.
What are both of your predictions for what's hot and what's not in music and fashion in 2010?
Jubilee: 2010 is looking good to me. Messy electro seems to be fading quickly and a lot of people are changing their sound to more of a housey vibe. Also the fact that artists such as Joy Orbison, Untold and Cooly G are getting alot of hype make me pretty happy about where 2010 may go. I hope it keeps up. As far as fashion goes, hoodies and dirty jeans will always be in style to me. I am never up on fashion. I still dress like I did when I was 14. Except my pants are way tighter. And I made some of those oversized basketball jerseys into dresses.
Star Eyes: Man, 2010. I think people are going to continue on this Mayan shaman psychic trip as we lead up to 2012; you know, some Illuminati shit mixed with Central American motifs. Black, capes, bats, creepers (the shoes), and more of the stuff that I thought was going to be big in 2009 but is just starting. Not all at once, but I think these things will be big fashion-wise: different kinds of leggings (more slouchy, better fabrics), Mishka, Peggy Noland, dressing like a pilgrim, Actual Pain, thigh high socks, this modern rockabilly look for guys is going to continue (and I certainly hope it does). Musically, I think every song will come with like 12 different remixes, and dubstep will continue to grow and become the new (better) hip-hop. I will continue to enjoy music that sounds like midnight voodoo ceremonies and equatorial zombie uprisings, as channeled by Chicago, London, and Detroit.
What can people expect at the secret location party this Friday?
Jubilee: Those Brooklyn sounds, maybe some Pitbull, classic rave jams, songs telling you to do certain dance moves, Jagerbombs?
Star Eyes: Songs about Blackberrys and iPhones, big bass tunes, sexy slow dances, the splits, and Pokemon speaker humping.

Northeast is all the rage this evening so why not do it D.I.Y. art crawl style? We'll list off more sweet N.E. events below, but we recommend you kick things off with a pop-in to the Grainbelt Bottling House! The Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association presents its 10th Annual Fall Fine Arts Show, which features over 150 works by member artists. See everything from photography to sculpture to paintings to mixed media and everything in between in the metro's largest annual group show. Show up before 8pm and vote for your favorite piece for the "People's Choice" award, snack on delicious fare provided by the Red Stag Supper Club, and yuck it up with fabulously eccentric artsy types from all over Northeast. Our own Kate Iverson is the producer of this annual community event and NEMAA's resident PR guru, so it's definitely at the top of our list this Friday. One of Kate's own cheeky photo works will be on display as well.

A longtime favorite of l'étoile, McBroom's been layin' low lately, so tonight's opening at the Gallery at Fox Tax is a wickedly momentous occasion in our opinion. Twelve new 3' by 3' works by the most meticulous mixed media artist in Minneapolis, McBroom's entire collection is based on Edward Lear's nonsensical 1871 poem "The Owl & The Pussycat." Of course, McBroom's current interpretations may take a more, er, "Adult" spin on things, if we know him at all. Throw in his staple "pop culture hoo-haw, candy colored whim whams & sparkly doo-dads" and you've got not only a dazzling visual representation before you, but also numerous, thought-provoking art puzzles that you'll have a ridiculous amount of fun examining and deciphering. SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: ZOLA JESUS
We have a bit of a girl crush on Wisconsin-based Zola Jesus (aka Nika Roza Danilova) and it's not just cuz she's got the voice of a dark angel and the face of a brazen vixen, or the fact that she lives close enough to stalk. Her latest LP, The Spoils, (released late this summer on Sacred Bones Records) features the creative talents of a seasoned musical genius trapped in the body of a 20 year old. Zola Jesus' low-fi, distorted goth-pop sound combines haunting vocals and truly disparaging lyrics with a twinge of rebellion and a subtly air of innocence – a mixture only a youth could pull off. In the video for the single, “Clay Bodies,” Zola pays homage to the famous French short film director, Man Ray, as she takes on the role of Kiki de Montparnasse, romping around like an ethereal renegade through Detroit's most ornate abandoned spaces. This track makes us want to break down in a neo-Victorian bedroom, our mascara heavily smudged, wearing only a tattered Betsey Johnson gown...but that's just us.

There is a long tradition of bringing the classic horror and science fiction stories of the nineteenth century to a live audience. Frankenstein and Dracula are easily the most widely-known incarnations of a movement that also includes the works of Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Edgar Rice Burroughs and, most recently, H. Rider Haggard. She: Immortal Witch- Queen of a Lost Worldis Hardcover Theater's adaptation of the lost world epic by the author more famous for having pennedKing Solomon's Mines and Allan Quatermain. Appearing on stage this month at the Bryant Lake Bowl Theater, a small band of actors reenact the adventures of Professor Horace Holly and his entourage via minimalist sets - relying only on lighting, narration and the strength of the cast.
She is a Victorian tale of three intrepid adventurers and a morally-ambiguous woman whose magical powers have placed her as unquestioned sovereign over a society that's been removed from the rest of the world for thousands of years. On stage, the enhanced storytelling style with which it is presented brings the central characters to life with all of the roundness, pathos, intensity and camp one would expect from the literary genre that would later inspire franchises like Indiana Jones and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
The narration provided by both main characters and the supporting chorus interweave with skilled acting to paint vivid imagery within the mind's eye. With a script tailored to a small stage and a smaller budget, the tight-knit theater company successfully brings a story of vast scale to the confines of a small theater space. At times, the cast wades into the aisles and weaves amongst the audience as a chorus stands in the background, intoning in unison, to create the illusion of the scene around them.
She: Immortal Witch Queen of a Lost World runs Thursdays and Saturdays at 7:00pm and Sundays at 3:00pm through November 22nd at Bryant Lake Bowl Theater, with admission of $14-$18 (pay what you can) or $12 with a Fringe Festival button. Doors open one hour before show time.
As we delve into November, we bid adieu to any possibilities of running around sans jacket -- and we've come to terms with that (the first real snowfall, however, is another matter entirely). Forgive us for being on a bit of a TV kick lately, but we just had to share another fun broadcasting link, MPLS.TV. Created by a collective of locals dedicated to spotlighting culture in Minneapolis, the public access show features comedic sketches, interviews and highlights local hotspots and musicians -- showcasing the unique and community-centered aspects of Minneapolis. With two episodes already released, “Breakfast” and Halloween,” the show will be releasing their newest episode “Lakes” on Thursday (see Bonus section below) and a Christmas special at the end of the year. MPLS.TV also features a segment called “City of Music,” where local music acts are caught performing in atypical average locations. Umber Studio's latest gallery exhibit, Seven By Seven, highlights the intricate bearing the number has had in both a concrete and artistic sense. For instance, there are seven colors in the visible spectrum, seven tones in the musical scale, seven wonders of the natural world, seven chakras and seven days of the week. Coincidence? These artists think not. Tonight's opening reception features works from the 7 artists who compromise the L7 group, Cami Applequist, Julia Elizabeth Babb, Savita Bettaglio, Kat Corrigan, Jean Leuthner, Kari Maxwell and Claudi Poser. Note to grunge fans: the L7 group has no relation to the hard-hitting lady, '90s angst-rock band of the same name. It may, however, have something to do with the 1950s slang phrase meaning “square.”

It's time for a great big slice of humble pie here at a tiny machine, because good lord, le petit connaisseur and my predictions about the final three in this season of Project Runway turned out to be ever so wrong. Last night, Logan was sent home. It was a decision that I agreed with whole-heartedly, but didn't know how to reconcile with my predictions about the finale. If Logan didn't design the first collection, who did? And though I'm sticking to my guns about the third collection being Althea's (seriously, the headband is a dead give-away), I'm starting to wonder about the second collection as well. Could it actually be Christopher's? Or are we possibly looking at an Irina-Carol Hannah-Althea showdown? Only time will tell, as my predictions are apparently not to be trusted.
Another note on last Thursday's episode: What was up with Althea's winning look? I liked the pants and the sweater, but couldn't really look away from the horrible, unflattering, unsupportive tank top. Model Tanisha's rack deserves better than that.
