Weekend What's What 6/17-6/20

SUNNY DAYS ARE (SORT OF) HERE AGAIN

You know summer is in full swing when every other event is some sort of outdoor extravaganza! From music on the plaza to artsy BBQs to big festivals, this weekend really ought to come with a free bottle of SPF30. Friday's a little iffy, but Saturday the sun should be shinin'! So, don your floppiest and/or fanciest hat, slather on some UV protection and enjoy summer in the city -- we certainly will. And don't forget, this Friday is the 3rd l'étoile Field Trip to the Weisman Art Museum. Hope to see you there!

THURSDAY JUNE 17TH

Cities, Bicycles, and the Future of Getting Around

@ Uptown Theatre
2906 Hennepin Ave
Minneapolis

7pm / $10

New Wave guru and electronic artist David Byrne is a bike enthusiast. Yes, it's true. For years, the eclectic, giant-suit-wearing founder of Talking Heads has been toting foldable bicycles on tour with him, relishing in the freedom and pleasure of exploring new cities via bike. He's even documented his travels in his 2009 book, Bicycle Diaries, and currently designs innovative bicycle racks for New York City. What started as a purely pleasure-seeking/mind clearing experience has now turned into social activism for Byrne as he tours the nation to discuss the future of cycling. Tonight – in conjunction with Policy & a Pint and Nice Ride MN – join Byrne and guest speakers MPLS Mayor and avid cyclist, R.T. Rybak; urban theorist, Jay Walljasper; and bicycle advocate, Steve Clark for an urban biking symposium focused on pedal-driven power in the Twin Cities and beyond.

ART PICK: CHRIS BERENS

Don't peer too closely at Dutch artist, Chris Berens' dreamy chimera portraits; like Alice's looking glass, Berens' paintings just might suck you into a portal of fantasy, ghostly realms and science fiction. Berens – AKA the artistic chops behind Blondie's soon-to-be-released new album cover, Panic of Girls – has created quite a buzz since rumors of the collaborative juncture, and for good reason. Starting with a small scene made from ink, bistre and varnish on glossy paper, Berens repeats each scene, perfecting and layering them, often creating multiple versions of each image. Once dry, he peels away the clear coating leaving only his favorite images. What results is an intricate collage of panels constructed entirely without the use of digital or photographic enhancements. Sound time-consuming? It is. But the completed work is nothing less than displays of brilliantly intriguing tiny worlds – a glimpse inside the puzzling mind of a dedicated dreamer. Pretty nifty, if you asked us. Although, we think the album cover would be très cool if it included a “man from Mars eating cars.”

A different band plays every weeknight, and burgers, beer, brats, and Ben and Jerry’s are also available for purchase. Tonight’s show is Minneapolis quartet The Hopefuls, whose peppy, fast-paced, and often deliberately corny tunes certainly fulfill their self-defined genre: “fun music for fun times.” Expect xylophone fills, synthesizers, hand claps, and an overwhelming urge to dance.

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: JESSICA LEA MAYFIELD

The magic of singer/songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield lies in contradiction: wistful lyrics and a downcast, Cat Power-like voice suggest a jaded adult, but Mayfield sings with the heart and fervency of a young girl in love. And rightfully so – Mayfield isn’t yet 21, though the dark complexities of songs are far beyond those expected of such a young artist. Gaining comparisons to the Avett Brothers and The Black Keys, the crop-haired, septum-pierced Mayfield is utterly captivating in her plaintive minimalism, which draws influence from both country and rock. With Blasphemy So Heartfelt, her debut album, is the perfect soundtrack for a summer drive or a rainy day indoors. But consider yourself warned – “Kiss Me Again” is bound to get stuck on repeat.

In Review: I Feel Love

by Beth Hammarlund

The multi-media fashion extravaganza I FEEL LOVE lived up to its buzz on Saturday night. Assembled by local stylist and producer Angie Hanson, Anthem Heart's Ken Hannigan and SCENEaSOTA's Maritza Ramirez, the show combined elements of fashion, video art and music.

Ramirez opened the show with a fall collection of feminine dresses and separates in a fresh modern palette. The collection successfully evoked the je ne sais quoi of an effortlessly chic Parisian girl.

Models flounced down the runway in cheeky mini-skirts and sophisticated blouses, and a beautifully proportioned coat suited for Audrey Hepburn served as one of the finale pieces. Stylist Jane Belfry added to the effect, focusing on the collection's grown-up sweetness with over-sized bowties by local line Freedom From Doubt and sheer thigh-highs and garters. And though the presentation was certainly whimsical, it never veered into girlish cutesiness. While the collection at times lacked in cohesion and a clearly unifying theme, it contained plenty of individual items that are extremely sellable.

Labine's collection of playful pieces took her signature over-the-top Japanese streetwear and anime-inspired shapes and turned them into something wearable. Though the longtime designer's bright colors and prints (designed in collaboration with show producer Angie Hanson) are still not for the fashion faint of heart, it was exciting to see the designer convert her inspirations and source material into such a fun and retail-ready collection.

Models posed and pouted in sheer black gartered thigh-highs, towering, candy-colored heels and striking pink makeup. The striped matching bows each model donned were a great unifying element to the styling, as were gorgeous steampunk-inspired gems by local designer Bionic Unicorn. Exaggerated shoulder details and exposed zippers punctuated the collection of mini-dresses, structured skirts and printed tees. Overall, it was a strong return to the runway for the long-missed designer.

The production team elevated the event from just another runway show into a feast for the senses. In addition to gorgeous video art from The Lovemelts, Jesse Draxler and Anthem Heart, chanteuses Camille Bourgergie and Alina Lindquist opened and closed the runway. The Night provided an interlude performance perfectly suited to the atmosphere created by the production team.

Designs from the show are available at Cliché.

Lé'Talk: An interview with Weisman curator Diane Mullin

by Kate Iverson

This Friday, the Weisman Art Museum will host its last official exhibition opening of 2010 before shuttering for a year to make way for the new museum expansion. And while you're still welcome to visit the Frank Gehry-designed art mecca through October, this weekend's relative last hurrah is sure to be a doozy. A roster of 10 all-local artists make up the Ordinarily Here exhibition, a stellar collection of artwork comprised of or based on every day objects and experiences. From Elizabeth Simonson's intricate, mind-boggling wire and cellophane tape installations to Jenny Jenkins' charmingly domestic embroidery pieces that depict local graffiti tags, the exhibit embraces and celebrates commonality in an incredibly uncommon way. Want to check out the exhibit with us? We're hosting our next l'étoile Field Trip at the Weisman this Friday, followed by an uber-secret arty after party. Click HERE for details on the Field Trip!

We chatted with "Ordinarily Here" curator Diane Mullin this week about the exhibit, the expansion, and the Twin Cities art scene...

l'étoile: Over the past year, the Weisman has been producing exhibits based on the art of the everyday. How does Ordinarily Here play into that theme differently than past exhibits?

Diane Mullin: For our 2010-11 investigation of the everyday, we focused on the varied meaning and manifestations of that idea in a number of our exhibitions and programs. In the fall, our exhibition To Have It About You: The Herbert and Dorothy Vogel Collection we presented a recently gifted collection with a special emphasis on how the Vogels made art a part of their of everyday lives. Branching from there we considered other ways in which people, not just collectors, but also museum-goers, artists, readers, and students. do and can make art an ordinary part of their lives. In the new year we presented works from our collection that addressed the idea of the common over the course of the last century and a half. This summer, we are focusing on our immediate artistic community by featuring ten living Minnesota-based artists whose work considers or utilizes the idea of the ordinary. In particular, the works all use a sense of place or context as a key element in the work.

Jenny Jenkins / Risk, 2010 / embroidery

You've focused on local artists for this exhibit, which is not an uncommon practice for the Weisman. Why do you think some of the other big museums veer away from this practice? How deliberate are you in choosing local artists to show?

First, I will say that the other museums in town don't necessarily veer away from exhibiting local artists. I think the manner in which they engage the local art community is in keeping with their particular missions. As a land-grant state university the Weisman is actively involved in keeping and assessing the state's history. And as has become more common with art museums, the Weisman is more actively involved in the presentation and at times production of contemporary work from the local area. From the recent survey of WARM to the exhibition of selections from our vast collection of New Deal art, the Weisman is, as a part of its mission, cataloging, researching, presenting, and offering new interpretations of the history of art here in the state. The choice to feature Minnesota-based artists for Ordinarily Here was entirely deliberate. It was an important part of the idea for the show. It seemed like the perfect ending to the year. The close-up focus on our community in this moment of increasing emphasis on the local--a social trend in which Minnesota is certainly a key if not a leading player--literally brings it all back home.

Adam Caillier / Antler Speaker, 2009 / inkjet print

The Weisman has a huge collection packed away in its vaults! How is the process different when curating a collection show as opposed to a show like Ordinarily Here?

As a curator I would say a major difference is the element of unpredictability and give and take one experiences working with living artists. Contemporary artists almost always want to at least tweak older work and more often would rather present something new in such a setting. While this is exciting, it requires a particular kind of effort and attention. When I draw from that vast store house in the "vault" as you say I have more time to consider, compare, and choose works. However, in all fairness, I must also say here that that vault has yielded its own fascinating surprises that have proven quite fruitful for me over the six years I've been working at the Weisman!

Vince Leo / Becaused / pigmented inkjet print

This Fall, the Weisman will be closing its doors for a year to complete the new expansion! What is being added and what sort of exciting new programming can people expect when you reopen?

Well, while we are keeping some particulars under wraps I can say that there will be new galleries for American art, ceramics, works on paper (which comprises the majority of what's in the "vault"), and a studio-based space for collaborative work. I can also say you can expect to see more interactive interpretive strategies, more new and commissioned work, and more university student and faculty involvement in the galleries.

Building Expansion Project / West Facade / Image courtesy Gehry Partners, LLP

What else does the Weisman have going on through the summer?

We'll have an installment of our WAMplified live music series featuring Minnesota band Solid Gold. That will include a midnight gallery tour with a number of the artists. We will continue our monthly Weekends with the Weisguides program. We'll also present an installment of our WAM Chatter series in September, asking the question: "Do local artists count?"

Val Jenkins / Shreds of Wit, 2010 / graphite on paper

What do you think about the local art scene and how do you think Minneapolis compares to other big art cities in general?

The Twin Cities is renowned for its unmatched support of not only arts institutions but also individual artists. That combined with an increasingly acknowledged globally diverse and smart population, makes this, I believe, a vital nexus for the arts. Capitalizing on both its sophistication and its relative smallness, the Twin Cities can be a wonderfully supportive place to produce, enjoy, and learn about the arts.

The opening party for Ordinarily Here happens on Friday, June 18th from 5:30-8:30pm at the Weisman Art Museum and is free and open to the public. For more info visit www.weisman.umn.edu.

In Review: Vita.mn Poolside Fashion Show

Text and photos by Tara Sloane

Drizzly and chilly isn’t exactly prime weather for strutting about in swimwear, but even that didn’t curb the sunny enthusiasm of last Thursday’s Vita.mn pool side fashion show. Hosted by Alexis "On the Sexes" McKinnis and the always witty Christian-Philippe Quilici, the show was divided into three sections: daywear, eveningwear, and – of course – swimwear.

[Look by Ra'mon-Lawrence Coleman, jewelry by Rox]

Lead stylist (and l’etoile staffer) Jahna Peloquin paired pieces from local designers such as Tender Cuts, Danielle Everine and Jenny Carle (from local boutique Cliché) and designer items from local shop Bumbershute with the likes of Mall of America stores like Burberry and Betsey Johnson, plus Bloomingdale's and Macy's. Meanwhile stylist John Sand headed up the menswear fashions with looks by independent designers Raul Osorio and Ra'mon-Lawrence Coleman, a former local and Project Runway contestant, as well as MOA stores and local shops Len Druskin, BlackBlue and martinpatrick3. The women’s footwear was all about strappy nude and beige heels and cage platforms (many of which were from Aldo), and exotic jewelry pieces from Rox by Robyne Robinson provided an added dash of pizazz and local color throughout the show.

The daywear collection was perfection - models wore a mix of airy bow collar blouses, pastel-colored jackets and skirts, and vintage-inspired straw hats – a look very much English garden party or Anne of Green Gables (the ladies even carried baskets of flowers, an adorable touch). The prairie-swept braids and dainty buttoned and polka-dotted jumper make this look particularly charming, a sentiment mirrored in the men’s flower-adorned pockets and lapels.

[Look by Tender Cuts from Cliché]

Next up was evening wear, which saw floral headbands and flirty, ruffled skirts on the ladies and fitted shorts, bowties, and even a cane for the guys. Contrasting the daywear to brilliant effect was the bold, cool-toned color palate apparent in both the men’s and women’s collections. Perhaps the most stunning was a floor-length, turquoise-and-white-print wrap dress by Ra'mon-Lawrence Coleman – the way it fluttered was absolutely ethereal, almost enough to make us thankful for the stormy breeze (almost). Another standout included the metallic grey, quasi-retro print shorts paired with a simple tee, both also by Coleman, with the red flower tucked in the back pocket for an added pop of color.

[Looks by Ra'mon-Lawrence Coleman]

The final collection – swimwear – also featured bold brights for the women, while the men rocked shorter, beachy-classic swim trunks, exclusively from local swimwear shop Nani Nalu. One-piece suits had a strong showing – I particularly enjoyed the ruched white one with a single strap, a cute twist on an ultra-feminine standard. And the simple boyish plaid provided a completely wearable option for guys who’d shy away from lounging by the pool in anything black and fitted.

[Swimwear from Nani Nalu, jewelry by Rox]

Overall, a show definitely worth the shivers. Here’s hoping that the summer sun – and with it these fabulous looks – will come back to grace the Twin Cities with another stylish season. To see more photos from the show, click HERE.

The club’s resident “Bitchelor” will be mixing extra-cheap drink specials, and the show also marks the inaugural edition of Jager’s new ladies night, Pussy Control. Peace and be wild, as it were – here’s hoping the darling duo doesn’t have another too-long hiatus up their tattooed sleeves.

FRIDAY ART PICK: WILLARD WIGAN

If patience is a virtue, then Willard Wigan must be the patron saint: the British artist is best known for his reproduction of Michelangelo’s David, which he carved out of a single grain of sand. But he didn’t stop there. From animals to storybook characters to the architectural landmarks to the Obama family, Wigan has created a slew of microscopic sculptures, several of which are no larger than a human blood cell, and all of which could sit in the eye of a needle or on the head of a pin. To carve these small wonders, Wigan uses a mixture of surgical blades and hand-made tools, which are custom made from an also microscopic sliver of tungsten. His materials of choice include dust fibres, nylon, gold, and cobwebs, which he paints with the hair of a dead housefly. And if that weren’t bizarre enough, Wigan creates all of his sculptures from a meditative state, for the pulse of his finger would be the end of that diminutive dragon or miniscule Mad Hatter, so to speak. Each sculpture takes somewhere around eight weeks to create, but at an extra-big price tag of $150,000, we’d say it’s worth the sacrifice. Yeah, our jaws are on the floor, too.

FRIDAY JUNE 11TH (THROUGH SUNDAY JUNE 27TH)

Mame

@ Illusion Theater
528 Hennepin Ave
Minneapolis

7:30pm / $25-28

Here at l'étoile, we're not in the habit of hiding our obsession for all things “Auntie Mame,” or Rosalind Russell for that matter; and why should we? Why “life's a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!” is practically our full-fledged mantra. Illusion Theater hosts Minnesota Musical Theater's version of the award-winning comedy, combining everything we love about our zany fave – style, witty quips, unapologetic alcoholism – this time with a cross-dressing twist as MMT co-founder Kevin Hansen assumes the role of Mame. For those of you unfamiliar with the plot (and a 'tsk, tsk' to you!), the story follows ten-year-old Patrick who is sent to live with his wildly eccentric, stunningly stylish, epicurean aunt in the height of the rip-roaring 1920s. Conservativisms are shattered, free spirits are exposed and life will never be the same. In the words of Mame, “après moi, le déluge!” See you there!

The show features the grimly beautiful, oversized oil paintings of Caitlin Karolczak and the mind-boggling assemblages of Michael Thomsen which offer a dark and nostalgic reverie in a busy modern day world. Not to mention, any art party at the Rogue Buddha is typically awesome, so pop in for what we're calling "one of our favorite exhibits of the year thus far" and rub elbows with the scores of cool Twin Cities artists who will surely be in attendance.

FRIDAY JUNE 11TH

Mallman DJ set

@ Clubhouse Jager
923 Washington Avenue North
Minneapolis

10pm / 21+ / Free

Somewhere between composing music for major motion pictures, electronica-remixing the Fleet Foxes with his band Ruby Isle, creating a comic book companion guide to most recent his solo album (2009’s Invincible Criminal), developing his fuzzy alter-ego Mallwolf, and generally being Minneapolis’ most famous non-celebrity, Mark Mallman has time to grace the Twin Cities with the occasional DJ set – one of which you can catch tonight at Clubhouse Jager. Already have plans (but just can’t get enough of his bed-head)? Mallman will also be playing with Communist Daughter at the Nomad World Pub on Saturday. With a show like that, (likely) getting pummeled by England in round one of the World Cup is apt to sting just a little bit less.

COOL LINK: LULA MAGAZINE

We heart Lula Magazine. Every page filled with whimsical prettiness, delicious imagery, offbeat ideas and phantasmal editorial spreads. Much to our delight (tiny squeal), previews of their latest issue can be caught online, creating an almost uncomfortable collection of coolness. Mixing crave-able high fashion with intimate chats with stylists, photographers, artists, musicians and other vogue peeps, Lula is “This American Life” meets Nylon. Issue ten features a podcast with Strawberry Shortcake creator/artist, Muriel Fahrion – interviewed by the blithe Kirsten Dunst; a short film by the amazing NY-based photographer, Catherine Servel; and an enamoring film from Swedish fashion photographer Sandra Freij which just so happens to brilliantly use Linda Scott's darling '60s ditty “I've Told Every Little Star” – yes the same one from Mulholland Drive. Lula is definitely the girl of our dreams!

Minneapolis

9:30pm / 21+ / $5

Twin Citizens, get ready to (indie) rock and roll! Tonight, four local powerhouses from this genre will be taking the stage at Sauce, headlining with the edgy, early Yeah Yeah Yeahs-esque dissonance of Kill to Kill, led by the sultry-voiced Sylvia Izabella. Also on the roster is the Brit-pop inspired Blue Sky Blackout, whose soaring stadium rock sounds just might ease the pain of U2 postponing their tour stop in Minneapolis. Maybe. Dragons Power Up! is a cutely-named trio known for catchy pop sensibilities caught somewhere between 90s indie rock and emo, and joining all three is St. Paul-based Puppies and Trains.

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: JANELLE MONAE

Just in time for summer, here comes Janelle Monae - a ragingly talented five foot tall pompador wearing, singing, dancing, and art-making machine. Sci-fi nerds rejoice: her ridiculously ambitious new album The ArchAndroid is spilling over with references to futuristic figureheads such as Philip K. Dick and the 1927 Fritz Lang film Metropolis, and synthesizes a wealth of influences, from Afro-futurism, glam rock reminiscent of Bowie, chamber orchestra, bebop jazz, R&B, and slickster-hip hop a la Flying Lotus. If that sounds like an exhaustive list, imagine what it sounds like live. Be on the lookout for a local date this fall!
