Weekend What's What 1/8-1/13

HUNT & GATHER

Way to bounce back! The Twin Cities seems to have easily shaken off its holiday lethargy just in time for a pretty rockin' weekend. Art exhibits, which have been on holiday hiatus as of late, are back in full effect; while rock shows and dance parties continue to ignite flames all over town. Our suggestion? Go out on the prowl! Meet some new people, see some new sights, and experience some fresh excitement. It is 2009 after all (an excuse we'll be using throughout January, if not February).

THURSDAY JANUARY 9TH

National Theater of the USA: Chautauqua

@ The Walker McGuire Theater
1750 Hennepin Ave
Minneapolis

8pm / $18 ($15 Walker members)

In the mid-twenties, President Theodore Roosevelt called the traveling Chautauqua Circuit “the most American thing in America.” Although present-day mediums of entertainment have evolved as we became a more technologically advanced nation, it's still Egalitarian and “American” to want to entertain others - just look at the increased popularity of the Youtube community. Tonight, New York City collective, National Theater of USA reinvents the art form of the circus troupe and pays homage to the Chautauqua Circuit in particular. The performance showcases choreographed dance, circus acts, vaudeville, music and more. Tonight's show features a bit more skin than a Shiners circus, so you might want to leave the kids at home. Runs Friday and Saturday night for just a few extra benjamins.

BONUS: Thursday night's kickoff performance also features FREE beer from Summit Brewing!

FRIDAY ART PICK: POSTERBOY

How many times have you looked at an ad and thought, "I could make this hilarious with a little time?" Posterboy has taken the NYC subway ads by storm, cutting and pasting them (in analog, not on the computer) to turn consumerist schlock into hilarious, political and subversive commentary on capitalism, war and sex.

FRIDAY JANUARY 9TH

John Berryman Poetry Party

@ Smuda Studio
2948 Chicago Ave. S, Buzzer # 08
Minneapolis

10:30 pm

Join local artists as they celebrate the lugubrious life and topical work of American poet John Berryman. Berryman's layered neo-Elizabethan imagination and quirky colloquialisms launched his success but it was perhaps his fatal and tragic jump from the Washington Avenue Bridge in 1972 that cemented his notoriety. Berryman's demise has become part of MPLS folklore to the extent that it has inspired other influential artists, like native band The Hold Steady who's song “Stuck Between Stations” fictionalizes the poet's suicide and feelings of isolation. Tonight, local artists, including photographer and studio owner Sean Smuda, read from Berryman's Pulitzer Prize winning volume 77 Dream Songs and screen a 30 minute 1974 documentary, I Don't Think I Will Sing Anymore Just Now by Carol Johnson in honor of a fallen legend.

BONUS: This event takes place following Dobby Gibson's book release party for Skirmish, his latest collection of poems at The Loft at 7pm. Gibson will also read at the Berryman event.

BONUS 2: Be sure to check out David Everett's cast iron/found object sculptures in the Shoebox Gallery, a storefront window in the Roberts Shoes building, just to the right of the 2948 Chicago entrance. It is also the opening for his "Angels and Fertility". The show is up through March 8th, 2009.

GUEST BLOGGER: LE PETIT CONNAISSEUR

Fashion blogger extraordinare Le Petit Connaisseur has discovered an amazing (and local) online gem, that has seemingly slipped past the radar of our cities stylish set!

ShopFatal.com: Euro-Fashion in Our Own Backyard

I am fairly obsessed with street fashion websites. Whenever I am in the fashion doldrums and need some inspiration, they manage to push me outside the safe style bubble of the Twin Cities. One of my favorites, HelLooks.com, focuses on street fashion in the capital of Finland, Helsinki. So when I recently stumbled across ShopFatal.com, an online shop featuring fashions that would be right at home on the web pages of HelLooks, I had to look twice when I saw the shop's mailing address: W. Lake Street in Uptown Minneapolis. (Read more at the link below)

It's hard to believe that Misery has been tearing things up so hard, for so long. When we were impressionable young things just discovering the punk scene, complete with liberty spiked green mohawks (well, one of us anyway), Misery was at the top of our list. As you can tell, we turned out a little more fancy and arty in our old age, but we still covet our treasured collection of old crustcore and punk records. Tonight, Misery will blow up the stage at the T-Rock in honor of their 20th anniversary. And while this makes us feel a bit old, it also makes us feel pretty damn cool for livin' in Twincy! Thakoon and Hayden-Harnett for Target

Even though the drop date isn't until tomorrow, Thakoon for Target is already available online. I had been pretty excited about Thakoon Panichgul's sophisticated-meets-playful, east-meets-west design aesthetic, so I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed with the rather generic offerings. That's not to say there aren't a few collector's items in the lot, though.

My top choice: The tie-front skirt in Cyber Floral ($24.99). Thakoon is known for his prints, after all, so it's no surprise I'm in love with this print.

Weekend What's What 12/25-12/30

JINGLE BELL ROCKIN’

This weekend is a bit light considering it’s sandwiched precisely between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but we have to admit we’re looking forward to “taking it easy” for once. Luckily the Twin Cities are music-obsessed so there is no shortage of sonic waves to be absorbed this time around, despite the obvious lack of art events. From big-time techno producer Claude Von Stroke to the chilled out indie-folk sounds of such groups as Dark Dark Dark, Matt Latterell, and The Parlour Suite; and from ‘70s glam rock cover bands to crunked-out holiday jam fests, this weekend's musical landscape has a little something for everyone!

Check back on Monday for our New Year’s Eve event guide, a comprehensive list of all the coolest parties and NYE shenanigans going down this coming Wednesday!

FRIDAY ART PICK: RUSS MILLS

This UK based artist/illustrator has definitely captured our attention in 2008 with his graphic novel meets Jackson Pollock-esque artwork. Fine lines and mischievous absurdity collide with a schizophrenic sort of beauty. The artist’s dark and moody color schemes and seemingly violent bursts of abstraction are as delicious as they are curious. Keep your eyes peeled for this one in ‘09!

New for Spring: Dip-dyed Tights by Calpurnia Peach

The always-busy duo behind Twin Cities fashion line Calpurnia Peach is known for its tights screen-printed with its original designs. Now, they're offering a new take on their best-seller: Dip-dyed tights. I received my first pair from the Peach girls, specially made in a magenta/plum colorway. My favorite part about the tights is how they get darker as they get closer to the bottom, working well with darker shoes and adding a great pop of color right where the skirt hem hits.

Eclecticoiffeur used mustard/brown tights, from Calpurnia Peach's Fall 2009 collection, for a promotional shoot for the collection on Friday. Above is an untouched preview of that shoot, photographed by Nic Marshall. Interested in some for yourself? Contact the designers at calpurniapeach@gmail.com.

A TINY MACHINE MONDAY

Another post from our fave Sci-Fi Beauty Blogger, A Tiny Machine!

I’ve Got Your Indie Credibility Right Here

It's not a breakthrough statement to observe that much of our power as citizens comes from our voices as consumers. By choosing where we spend our money, we make statements about our values and beliefs in an objective and effective way. I make efforts to be socially and politically conscious with my spending, but I also buy a lot of Go International blouses from Target and cheap dresses from Forever 21.

However, in the current economic climate, I'm trying to be more aware of where and how I spend my money, and what political and social statements that those purchases make. Though I'm still pumping my fair share of dollar bills back into the national economy, I'm also making a concerted effort to support smaller independent artists and boutiques. And since online shopping is my crack, I've been spending way more than my fair share of time on sites like Etsy and Supermarket. Here are a few of my favorite discoveries.

Necklush in Charcoal Grey (Supermarket): Anything that's too tight around my neck immediately turns me from a relatively reasonable 27 year-old woman into a petulant child. "Mom! Get it off!" she cried as she clawed helplessly at the neckline of her embroidered holiday turtleneck. So I love that this circular scarf can be worn nice and loose. The $55 price tag is more than I usually spend on an easy-to-misplace outerwear accessory, but that's because I forgot my cashmere Burberry scarf in the movie theater when I saw Marie Antoinette and I haven't really gotten over it. But this might just be the item that gets me off of the Target outerwear train. Plus, it reminds me of this squid ink spaghetti that I had at the Loring Pasta Bar a couple of years ago. I never knew that dark gray noodles could be so delicious.

Click below for many more indie shopping picks from A Tiny Machine, and also a pretty good Gwen Stefani rant!
