Weekend What's What 3/26-3/31

CARPE DIEM

That's right, Twin Citians. Seize the day! We can already feel the excitement building as our creative cohorts begin to come out of winter hibernation -- even our own seasonal depression is beginning to vacate the premises. With tons of new schemes and revived passions, l'étoile promises to bring you even more content this Spring and beyond. We're takin' the bull by the horns and will be doing everything we can to keep you up to date on what's cool in the Twin Cities. This weekend, however, we suggest you follow suit and think big! The world waits for no one, after all, and you're much too good looking to remain in hiding.

THURSDAY MARCH 26TH

Handsome Furs

@ The Entry
701 1st Ave. N.
Minneapolis

8pm / 18+/ $10

Freshly hailing from SXSW, Montreal-based, Sub Pop duo, Handsome Furs, strut their stuff on stage tonight for this Radio K sponsored show. With drum machines and repetitive electronic beats from Alexei Perry paired with the reverberating guitar fuzz and the familiar vocals of Wolf Parade’s Dan Boeckner, the husband-and-wife team pull matrimony into realms of indie electronic and harness a sound Rolling Stone calls “a dingy version of the Cure rocking some hipster dive bar.” While we wouldn’t quite call The Entry a “dive bar,” one thing's for sure; the Handsome Furs and guests The Cinnamon Band will definitely get the place a’rockin’.

THURSDAY MARCH 26TH

Milkbagbrother & Ironbitchface

@ Hexagon Bar
2600 27th Ave S
Minneapolis

9pm / Free

This is bound to be quite a show! Not one, but two ambassadors bring good tidings from our Canadian neighbors to the north. Milkbagbrother’s R. Kelly Trapped in the Closet-inspired songs are hilarious and Ironbitchface delivers black metal-punk-noise (doesn’t Canada allow spaces in their band names?) Even more reason to go out tonight is Minneapolis’s newest lounge band, Tropical Ambrosia Salad, and Bri from BFF’s solo act, Bri and her Big Shirt.

FRIDAY ART PICK: GWON OSANG

Korean Artist Gwon Osang makes delightfully creepy life-size sculptures using hundreds of photographic images to build up the surface appearance of the models - including their face, hair and clothes. Osang’s unique process gives these brilliantly crafted figures both photo-realist and surrealist qualities that plays with the idea of scale and proportion, making ordinary objects look extraordinary. We loves it!

FRIDAY MARCH 27TH

A Raisin in the Sun

@ Guthrie Theater
818 2nd Avenue S.
Minneapolis

Times vary, Check website / $29-$53 (see ticket deal below)

The Guthrie and The Penumbra Theater Company have teamed up to bring the literary classic, A Raisin in the Sun, to the stage. A vibrant ensemble cast recreates the life and times of a family struggling to succeed in 1950's America. With big dreams and high hopes, the Younger family is conflicted over how best to use the $10,000 life insurance settlement from the estate of their late patriarch. Walter Lee's entrepreneurial aspirations, Benetha's education, and Ruth and Lena's dreams of living in a new home all come to a head when the check arrives. An inspiring, yet poignant tale of a hardworking African American family determined to build a happy, successful life for themselves in an era of repression, A Raisin in the Sun is an important note in American History. Thoughtfully cast, this production is filled with intense emotion, pride, and cleverly delivered good humor. A must-see Guthrie/Penumbra collabo endeavor, A Raisin in the Sun may just inspire you to appreciate the truly important things in life that much more.

BONUS: Special deal Alert! Tickets are $20 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings! Call the Guthrie Box Office at 612.377.2224 and quote code “A74.”

FRIDAY MARCH 27TH

Amarcord

@ Lagoon
1320 Lagoon Ave
Minneapolis

Times vary / $9

Ah, youth. While in it, you can’t wait to escape its restrictive grasp. When you’re grown, you nostalgically long for its freedom and simplicity. Newly restored in 35 MM prints, Federico Fellini’s Amarcord or “I Remember,” is a satirical recollection of the famed director's own youth, growing up in 1930s provincial Rimini. A personal masterpiece, the film’s carnivalesque setting portrays “daily life as a circus of social rituals” juxtaposed between an adolescent fantasy world of desire and naivety, and the realities of Fascist, pre-war Italy. Running for one week only, don’t miss the "Best Foreign Film" Academy Award-winning classic that's known as the most intimate and gentle film Fellini ever made.

Visit the Landmark Theater website for show times.

COOL LINK: ZEUS JONES

While most of the world was focused on the music aspect of SXSW, our friends at interactive design firms, Zeus Jones and Sierra Bravo, were participating in an environmental competition that started right here in MPLS. As winners of Microsoft's regional PhizzPop Design Challenge - where designers were asked to create an environmentally sound way to market technology on a worldwide scale - Zeus Jones moved onto the finals in Austin to compete against other regional winners from across the country. The challenge to “help the citizens of Austin live more sustainably using currently-available technologies,” gave participants a 2 week project deadline to be presented in a seven minute live talk before the SXSW audience and a panel of judges. Inspired by the plethora of environmental and sustainability programs the city of Austin already undertakes, Zeus Jones developed their national winning concept, USEMORE, an idea involving a conceptual social networking platform designed to unite the community in sharing underused resources. Watch the video and give these sustainable geniuses some mad props! The more backing this idea has, the better likelihood that we can project it locally in the Twin Cities. Our personal opinion? Brilliant! Color us impressed.

While this group may still be on the road to fame and fortune, we have a feeling it's nipping dangerously at their heels. Snapping up one of these works is an investment well worth making!

The Spank Tank: Revisited

@ The Spank Tank
Secret Location (click HERE to message)
Minneapolis

8:30 p.m. / $5 donation

We're pretty sure this is an old school basement show in Dinkytown, and may very well be jam-packed with rowdy indie-rock college kids. We hear there will be jello shots though, and that's something we can always get behind. We were rowdy college kids once, after all, and now we're rowdy mid-twenties to (very young looking) thirty-somethings so we really can't judge. l'étoile pal (and local art/music instigator) Phil B.'s band, Quist and the Hats, is playing along with RisingSide and Gladiola, so it will definitely turn out to be quite the rock n' roll extravaganza!

Laura Fulk Spring Preview

I just received a press kit featuring images and the video for Laura Fulk's debut solo show, "Suffocate," presented by mplsart.com. It will be held April 21 at The Lab Theater; tickets will be on sale beginning March 30 at thelabtheater.org.

What's particularly exciting to me about Fulk's collection is that she's managed to translate her unique aesthetic into clothing that's sophisticated and, for the fashionably fearless, wearable. On top of it all is the integration of art within the clothing; the artwork of local artists Melissa Breitenfeldt and Jay Langer have been digitally printed onto some of the fabric used in Fulk's designs.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

@ Bedlam Theater
1501 S. 6th St.
Minneapolis

7:30pm / $15

Mendacity, betrayal, greed, homosexual undertones and family crisis all covered in a two and a half hour melodrama? We smell a Tennessee Williams production. Local experimental theater company, Lamb Lays with Lion, presents their rendition of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the tumultuous classic of the break-down of a marriage between an alcoholic ex-football star, Brick, and his guilt-ridden, ostentatious wife, Maggie “The Cat." The only thing hotter than the Southern weather back drop in this play, is the malicious, raw dialogue and sexual innuendos that were made famous on-screen by Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. This production runs through April 5th and offers a noon brunch during its Sunday performances. Visit the Bedlam Theater website for a full performance times schedule.

FRIDAY ART PICK: EDITH KOLLATH

We’ve all loved a book to the point of emotional attachment. Edith Kollath takes this feeling one step further with her “Breathing Books.” A German artist at the crossroads of art and technology, her books caused a scandal when confiscated by the Transportation Security Administration, making her yet another artist misinterpreted as a potential terrorist by security culture. Her work challenges how we think of and treat inanimate objects, but also, after the TSA debacle, what the authorities find noteworthy and alarming.

Scarface featuring Muja Messiah

@ Uptown Theater
2906 Hennepin Ave
Minneapolis

Doors at 11:45pm / $9

Being bad never felt so good. Oliver Stone's crime drama following the life of an 80's drug lord, screens tonight at the rowdy hour of midnight. In this cult classic gangster Tony Montana rises to the top of the criminal underground while copious amounts of cocaine and violence heat up the screen, not to mention Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer at their all-time sexiest. The film developed a cultural following for its quotable one-liners, memorable movie posters, Miami mobstyle clothing, Giorgio Moroder music and its general bad-assness -- especially influencing the hip hop scene. And what better way to introduce the film than with a performance by local rapper, Muja Messiah (who in our opinion is a lot hotter than Tony Montana!)

WIN BIG: E-mail kate@letoilemagazine.com with "UPTOWN" in the subject line, along with your full name to be entered to win a pair of tickets to this screening! Winners will be notified by e-mail by Friday, and names will be on a list at the box office for Saturday's midnight screening.

For the last few years, documentary filmmaker John Paul Burgess has been following local indie-rock band Cloud Cult, gathering material for No One Said It Would Be Easy, a biographical take on Cloud Cult’s epic journey over the past decade together -- and their personal stories of grief and redemption along the way. Echoing the emotional catharsis required of a Cloud Cult performance, the film ebbs and flows, is filled with soaring highs and crushing lows, and is about what happens when a group of people commit to something much larger than themselves. The film drops in stores April 21, but you can preview it along with the band, their friends, family, and fans at the Varsity Theater on Sunday night.

Weekend What's What 3/12-3/17

BIG TIME

What a weekend for the Twin Cities! Not only are we sending off our best and brightest to the SXSW Festival with a bang at First Avenue, but we're also privy to new work by Minneapolis graffiti darling Deuce Seven, putting on his first full-scale solo show in the SooVAC's main gallery. Add in a bit of steampunk fashion, full moon puppetry, and the christening of a brand new art gallery in St. Paul, and you've got yourself a weekend of boundless possibilities and extravagant theatrics. Spring is just around the bend, so don't let this week's cold snap put you in the corner, baby!

Bonus: Tuesday is St. Patrick's Day! See our mini-guide at the end of this week's blog for the luckiest places to drink green beer in the Twin Cities.

COOL LINK: PINK OF PERFECTION

In the tunnel vision era of recession, knowing when to pinch pennies and when to give in to the urge to splurge is an art highly coveted, much like the colloquial “knowing when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em.” The mindset of blog Pink of Perfection is that being thrift-conscious doesn’t necessarily mean ditching sushi for Ramen and the opera for evening cable, but rather being cleverly resourceful, scouting for the best deals and embracing the simple pleasures, while never sacrificing the creative and adventurous life you deserve. Pink of Perfection is described as a modern-day rendition of Martha Stewart’s Living, the thrifty girl’s guide to la dolce vita (The Sweet Life) featuring craft projects, literary escapes, recipes, and even a few tips on how to avoid the weekend recession blues.

In this ten-part puppet series they find an evil drummer; attend a Quintron show; sloppily apply their makeup; and learn to play their cardboard instruments. This is what happens when musicians get crafty!

GUEST BLOGGER: A TINY MACHINE

Beth Hammarlund live blogs from JagerCon (see above) at last week's screening of Forbidden Planet.

Best Robot Tailor Ever

I'm currently watching Forbidden Planet at Jagercon, the weekly event that my dear Kate Iverson and I host in Minneapolis at Clubhouse Jager. This is my first viewing of the movie (which hurts my nerd cred, I know) and I'm obsessing over Anne Francis' costumes. The film is a loose re-telling of Shakespeare's The Tempest set in a technologically advanced future. Though it was released in 1956, the special effects and electronic score are extremely advanced for that age of film making (plus, young Leslie Nielsen). The story follows a research team from Earth as they visit the planet Altair to discover the fate of a human colony established 20 years previously. Upon their arrival, they find that all of the colonists are dead, save one doctor and his teenage daughter Alta (who has had little interactions with humans other than her father). The doctor has built a robot assistant, Robby the Robot. Alta designs her clothing, and Robby sews it for her in remarkable time. The result is pretty sci-fantastic, and I had to share a few of the film's promotional images here.

GUEST BLOGGER: LE PETIT CONNAISSEUR

Fashion blogger Jahna Peloquin reviews Fashion Fight Night.

In Review: Fashion Fight Night Bout 2

Bout 2 of METRO Magazine's Fashion Fight Night III pitted two-time Fight Night champ Justin Grierson against one of last year's winners Ingrid Werthmann. Both photographers are notoriously heavy-hitters, and the shots all packed a punch. While Grierson played it safe with seasoned model Cari Jedlicki, Werthmann took a risk using a male model, edgy European-esque styling (courtesy of Richard Anderson, arguably the best fashion stylist in the city), and a trampoline. The risk paid off, and Werthmann won the bout.
